Can you win the title with a point guard that can't really defend and a power forward who doesn't protect the rim? Yeah, actually, LeBron can.
I'm not a Bazemore or Cole Aldrich believer (sorry ank) but Patty Mills and Harrison Barnes will keep this team going into the future. LeBron is past his prime and Redick is no spring chicken, but the team is so well constructed it won't matter. If Aaron Gordon blows up that's just icing on the cake.
2poor
Granted he got the first pick but still this is a fine example of team building. Steph Curry is the best player in the league and he's built a team that maximizes his strengths and covers his weaknesses. McCollum has some defensive issues but he can shoot like heck and we know he can play next to a ball dominating PG - overall he's a middle class man's Klay Thompson. Carroll showed last year that his knee surgery is behind him, which is a real consideration. Millsap still isn't a real three point threat but for a four man he does enough. Adams shoots better from the field than the line, and 55% isn't quite enough to discourage hacking, but if your worst case scenario is getting 1.1 points per offensive trip that's an elite offense.
The bench and future in general isn't as rosy. Millsap and Iguodala are past their prime. WCS looked pretty good considering he was in Sacramento but you don't need two Steven Adamses. Carroll should be able to slide to four if Millsap falls apart, but if Iggy does too that leaves Evan Turner starting. It could get dicey, but they're no doubt contenders in year one and I think they last at least to year two.
Heebs
Having an Ibaka / Horford tandem protecting the rim is outstanding, but they can't protect the three point line, which is where this team is going to get annihilated playing Durant and Gallinari on the wing. This is compounded by having Tyreke Evans as the third wing. We just saw this in the Finals, rim protection is very important but the first priority is defending the three point line. Pau and Bosh have by far the most variability looking forward. If they both play they'll be the class of this league for backup bigs. But they both might retire literally tomorrow.
The only youth on this team is Justise and he's relegated to the deep bench, and Durant and Conley are way older than you think. Still, they have a reasonable chance to try and beat everyone 140-130 all three years. The offensive talent and fit is there, the other side of the ball wooooof. Conference Finals at best.
ANK1990
Jae Crowder is your classic 3 and D guy who is actually a terrible three point shooter (32%) and who made his teams worse on defense when he played each of the last two years. He can stay out of the way on good teams, but this is a team already starved for spacing. Paul George is okay at 36%, Kemba shot 37% last year but he actually shot 37% ± 4% on a career 33% so I am not a believer in Kemba's shooting. Tristan and Klay go without saying in each direction. It's gonna be tricky on both sides of the ball, and a tricky fit is not the place for Giannis.
The future is just as much of a question mark. Giannis, Ingram, Russell, Embiid all have potential. Is Giannis ever going to learn to shoot or pass? Ingram in college was a killer from three and a choker from the line, which is his real shooting capability? Russell's ast:tov makes Giannis look like Chris Paul, how much of that was due to the mamba wrapped around his neck? Is Embiid ever going to play actual NBA games? Too many question marks to take the Fighting Saurs seriously in this field.
Bankz
Davis is just too good offensively, and playing next to Noel is a fantastic pairing. The perimeter leaves a lot to be desired, but there's enough shooting and playmaking put together between the three. The bench right now is a disaster, and that holds them to dark horse status.
Mudiay, Jokic, Bender are unknowns, even Mirotic has potential. This squad could be a legit contender in year three, but I don't think there's enough shown so far to put them with the others in that department.
Bruns
Whiteside is a legitimate offensive hub big man, the problem is so is Blake and their games really don't complement each others. Still, with Kyrie and Batum spotting up I think there's enough space and touches to go between the big two, the issue there is you waste Kyrie and Batum's playmaking ability if they're just entering the ball and spotting up, and even if you force it to them there's not enough space to work in the paint. Oladipo isn't a good fit anywhere, I think this particular squad exacerbates his issues even more. You could go Kyrie/Dragic backcourt but that has even more superfluous playmaking, and Dragic already blew up one team because he didn't like playing in the two point guard look. If we could make trades this team would be in great shape because their return on any one of Kyrie / Blake / Whiteside would really smooth things out, but we can't, so they're not contenders.
Nobody's old but nobody's young in the starting lineup. Okafor is just a guy. The hope is that Simmons blossoms into a stretchy four and you let Blake come off the bench to post up / pnr opposing back up units with Dragic, but Simmons made 1 three pointer and 67% of his free throws in college so it's going to take a lot for him to get there, and even if he does you need Oladipo to pump his shooting too to really put this team over the top. Too many hopes and needs imo.
Citizen Cane
Fournier is an interesting player. He's a terrible mid range shooter and a very good three point shooter, but he doesn't take mid range shots, he finishes at the rim, he passes well. None of that matters because Carmelo's taking all the shots ayyyyy lamo. I would like to see a lineup with Beal in Melo's place, but I don't think any of those starters have enough juice to run the offense themselves, and I don't think there's enough collective passing to make it work Hawks style.
Josh Richardson could be good? Everyone else is only gonna get worse.
Lazy Pete
A knockoff of 2poor's squad in a lot of ways, but there's so much potential here he's a dark horse in year three almost by default. Like Kemba, Wall maybe demonstrated three point range last year but probably didn't. Still, he can defend which meshes well with Harden and run the offense which... doesn't so much. Tobias needs to improve his shooting even playing at the four. If Gobert can shoot 70% at the rim and 60% at the line like two years ago he doesn't need a jumper. If he can only hit 65% / 55% like last year, that's not good enough. Too much improvement needed to expect noise in year one.
The future... ho baby. Myles Turner didn't play a ton last year but he didn't play joke minutes, and he looked like an extremely legit scoring big. If he can keep playing adequate defense, he could easily supplant one-way Gobert as the starting center or Tobias as the starting power forward. Projecting college guys is always a crap shoot not least because they play about 1000 minutes a season, but Hield has four seasons, so we can be reasonably sure he can shoot at least. His horrific passing numbers are a major concern for a 6'4" guy, everything else who knows. Year three is tantalizing.
Face-in
KAT is the truth. Derrick Favors can't shoot but he can finish the h#ck out of the ball and make his free throws, though the defense is a question mark. I was a big Middleton fan last year and boy did he answer the bell this year. His shooting and on/off weren't as ridiculous but they were still sensational. The drop in rebounding is a concern but the team rebounding on/off was okay, and he made up for it with a huge surge in playmaking. Bradley has a respectable jump shot, and finished 72% at the rim last year, which at 6'3" tells me he does a great job cutting off the ball. And they're all going to stand around watching Westbrook go one on four.
The future is excellent. Karl is going to be a stud, Booker has a shot at being good. They're a late dark horse because even Westbrook is so electric he can sometimes pull off the sociopath offense, but benching him would really put this team over the top.
Odin
If this was just starting lineups Odin would be a legit contender. There's a lot of weird pieces here but the mix makes sense to me. Bledsoe can't shoot or stay healthy, but Porter's waiting in the wings. And maybe Dunn! But probably not. That bench though hunty, yeesh. Still, the Butler and the Dame are enough to make a charge to the Conference Finals now and again.
The only future guy is Dunn, so.
SugarShaun
Kinda feel like I'm being trolled with this DC. We don't have any data on Boogie playing with a good team, but he plays well on Team USA so that's something. He doesn't have a two point jumper but he might have a three good enough for a center. Green and Paul can absolutely be elite supporting cast guys - Green probably didn't forget how to shoot threes. Love isn't gonna like it but he's won one ring not liking it so another is plausible. Then there's Wiggins. :cmonson: You've got a championship caliber shooter right there on the bench in JR!
Not a lot of upside here either. Wiggins is the only player who could plausibly get better over time. Shaun has a lot of solid guys on the bench though: Monroe, Rubio, Ariza. There's enough here to make the Finals if everything falls right. I would be shocked if they won a title though.
Trofie
In a reverse of last year, trof has a sensational frontcourt and a deeply troubling backcourt. Kawhi is the third best player in the NBA. Valanciunas is the best all around scoring center in the league until Bosh comes back. Porzingis needs work but he's got the instincts, the size, and the jump shot already, the rest is easy. Dieng finished at the rim at 70% and shot 43% on long twos last year. Biyombo has a major case of Roy Hibbert Syndrome (play great in one playoff series against LeBron then regress sharply to the mean) but for a fourth big he can just go play defense. Korver is an elite three and d guy. Then there's the guards... But there's too much talent up front, they're a dark horse bare minimum.
The future is an interesting mix. Kawhi and Jonas aren't getting better. The saving grace of playing Korver at two over DeRozan will become less feasible as he hits his late 30s. Porzingis is going to get much better. Lavine jumping a level would be a massive boon to the squad, but it doesn't look too likely. He can at least make a jump shot so over time he'll replace DeRozan. Taurean Prince could be a star but he's a forward so that doesn't really help. I think on the strength of the Snapper alone (plus Kawhi not going anywhere) they'll be a real contender come year three.
