First time writer, long time reader. Today we are looking back at the Free Agency period of the 3036 season, also known as the beginning of the Dump Dynasty. It was the worst of times. We’re going to take a look at the class in groups based on the follow contract types: MAX (anything over 12m annually), Mid-Range (above 4.5m annually up to 12m annually), MLE, and LLEs. We’ll look at the notable deals, good and bad, from each type.
MAX Deals:
Celtics Sign SG Jimmy Jackson for $93,750,000 over 6 years.
Unquestionably the biggest move of Free Agency in recent years and the one that swung 3 titles to Boston, AKA “Dumptown”. Coming off of a 32ppg, All-Star, 3rd Team All-NBA campaign for the Bulls, Jimmy Jackson refused to agree to a contract extension and chose to enter the market. Former Bulls GM Bruns reacted to the news with a simple “Fuck”. Jimmy has since made the All-Star team 3 times, made the All-NBA 1st team twice, the All-NBA 2nd team twice, and won the MVP award in 3037. He still has two years remaining on his deal with the Celtics and shows no sign of slowing down.
Heat Sign C Alonzo Mourning for $117,563,750 over 7 years.
Zo’s entire career has been spent in Miami and Eric Splolestra made sure he would stay home with a MAX offer befitting his play. In the past 4 years he has been a dominant defender, good low-post scorer, and has certainly been worth the price paid. How he has only managed to make one All-Star team speaks as testament to the strength of the Eastern Conference and the incompetence of our software. News that he is now on the block is surely sad for Zo, who has showed so much loyalty to South Beach.
Trailblazers Sign SG Billy Hoyle for $120,312,500 over 7 years.
The biggest money deal of the year, landing Billy Hoyle, was spent to get a player with good efficiency marks, but poor volume. Hoyle was never destined to be a superstar, but was certainly never worth the money. After two more years of good, not great play… Billy was traded to his 3rd WC team, the Kansas City Kings. He has continued to put up similar numbers in KC, while he was replaced by Elgin Baylor back in Portland. The Blazers don’t miss him at all.
Nets Sign C Zan Tabak for $17,500,000 over one year.
Zan was immediately shipped to Cleveland for Mystic Stone… which is a basketball player, I guess… and not some sort of RPG sidequest. Turned into a one-year rental for Stone and Tabak retired after a lackluster 3036, ending a pretty blah career.
Celtics Sign SF Dwight McGhee for $12,500,000 over one year.
Only notable because he was almost immediately traded for Rudy Gobert, who became a defensive stalwart on Boston’s frontline for the next 4 years.
Mid-Range:
Rockets Sign PG Maxwell Horry for $40,000,000 over 4 years.
Definitely an overpay, Maxwell has remained with the Rockets since signing this deal and just re-signed for a cool million for the 3040 season. He learned behind Jesse Epstein in a tanking year, then spent time on and off as a starter and was an important piece of a Rockets team that pushed for a WC crown. Now relegated to a backup spot, Maxwell is properly paid and is a good sub.
Kings Sign PG Tony Bennett for $8,000,000 over one year.
Pretty strong overpay for a backup PG, but the deal lead to a 60-win season… so it’s hard to nitpick. Bennett remains unsigned in 3040, despite being a decent backup and only 31 years old.
Timberwolves Sign SG Corey Maggette for $19,500,000 over 3 years.
Exceedingly average player, playing for a pretty average team. Money might have been a little high, but he was a Timberwolf through and through. Corey retired at the end of the contract.
Bullets Sign C Hayden Edwards for $35,000,000 over 7 years.
Very team-friendly contract for a solid defensive big. However, he fell off pretty severely after the 3036 season, with a reduction in blocks and rebounds. He was traded to the Bucks following the 3038 season, but has yet to suit up for the team. He still has 3 years remaining on the deal, which really just looks like dead money at this point… but that is Trofie’s problem, not KN’s.
Suns Sign C Brook Lopez for $66,000,000 over 6 years.
A near-MAX deal for a very, very good player. While he hasn’t received the publicity of his big-partner the Shaquille O’Neal (who is not a Jew), Brook has been pretty dominant in scoring, rebounding, and blocking. His PT has taken a hit in the last two seasons as the team moved on from Shaq and brought in a Mystic-Wang combo and made it a 3-man rotation. Still has a good bit of value. Probably my 2nd favorite contract signed in 3036.
For MLE and LLE deals, given their short nature, we are just looking at if that player made a big impact for the year or rode the pine and collected paychecks. We’ll highlight the highest achievers (statistically) and the ones who just sat there and watched some basketball:
MLE:
Raptors Sign PF Chad Gallagher for $4,500,000 over one year.
Chad played 7 minutes a game for pretty decent team, but basically did nothing. Good for him.
Trailblazers Sign C Mouhamed Sene for $4,500,000 over one year.
See Gallagher, Chad.
Grizzlies Sign C Jusuf Nurkic for $4,500,000 over one year.
Nurkic played solid back-up minutes for a playoff team, putting up serious block numbers in his part-time role (3.5 per 36). One of the best MLE signings of the year.
Kings Sign PG Jerry Eaves for $4,500,000 over one year.
Did virtually nothing. Big swing and a miss.
Bullets Sign PG Russell Westbrook for $4,500,000 over one year.
Played solid backup minutes to Kyrie Irving on an elite team. Put up great numbers on a per minute basis. Along with Nurkic, probably the top MLE of the 3036 class.
Bobcats Sign PF Popeye Jones for $4,500,000 over one year.
Ended up on the Bullets and played a solid supporting role in their excellent season. Helped Odin tank, ultimately.
LLE:
Suns Sign C Broderick Williamson for $1,200,000 over one year.
Decent minutes good numbers for a 3rd big behind 2 legitimate superstars. Good price. Good deal for the Suns. I would call him the best LLE signing of 3036.
Rockets Sign C Brad Daugherty for $1,200,000 over one year.
Was traded from one crappy team to another (to Seattle for Enes Kanter). Decent scoring numbers… opposing fans often called him Bra –augherty because he played no D whatsoever.
Timberwolves Sign C William Bedford for $1,200,000 over one year.
Put up really good defensive numbers on just a garbage team. Buried on the bench behind a worse player for tank reasons.
Bobcats Sign C Todd MacCulloch for $1,200,000 over one year.
Ended up on the Bullets in the same deal that saw them nab Popeye Jones. Did virtually nothing.
Bullets Sign C Serge Ibaka for $1,200,000 over one year.
Traded immediately to the Spurs. Played in all 82 games and put up good rebounding numbers and good shot-blocking numbers.
Heat Sign PG Jerryd Bayless for $1,200,000 over one year.
Backed up Penny (the big one) and put up pretty decent numbers (aside from 3pt%) in that role. Probably the best non-center LLE of 3036.
