okay so DnD is all based on dice. I'm going to use an online communal area to do this and provide the link. If you want you can be there to make sure I'm not cheating and/or roll your own virtual dice. This is not a requirement, and I'm perfectly happy to do it all myself. I am open to other suggestions but I feel like this is the clear winner.

So I've been doing some research for the local game I've started to run and I think I'm going to buy a license for hero labs. Looks like an awesome tool for character management. If we actually play this more than once, I'd spring for a license for eric or whomever DMs

If we actually play this more than once, I'd spring for a license for eric or whomever DMs appreciate the thought, and agree, definitely don't spend anything on our account until we actually play. here's the spell library i'm gonna use so people can start forming thoughts on that end. i think they're all pretty straightforward but of course people can inquire as needed: wizardresistance acid splash detect magic telekinesis expeditious retreat magic missile detect secret doors identify blur scorching ray detect thoughts web heroism fireball lightning bolt rage clericcure light wounds inflict light wounds protection from evil cure moderate inflict moderate aid cure serious inflict serious prayer

how do spells like detect evil work, since I assume they wouldn't be used in encounters the way magic missile or fireballs are used. Is it just that you probably won't need to detect evil more than every once in a while?

Is it just that you probably won't need to detect evil more than every once in a while? Exactly. Anecdotally on Saturday we were in an old monastery that was being used as a base for some cultists. We found a room with an old wizard who told us not to bother him and to go away. We told him why we were there (searching for captives of the cultists). He told us that the earth cultists had been there for months and they'd become a nuisance to his studies. We parlayed a little more with him wound up cutting a deal that he'd let us use his chamber as a resting spot (we needed to take a rest to regain abilities/health) if we cleared out all the cultists. We did a history and religion check on the wizard and discovered he was a lich. Now, normally, a lich is bad news. Our paladin cast detect evil and it came up empty - meaning this particular lich was not evil. So we rested. No way we'd have done that without knowing he wasn't evil.

there isn't any this time around. So I just build a character? How many players is this damn game? yes, build away, or if you have any questions or would like some advice on how to build a particular idea we can do that too. there is no explicit limit to the number of players, and while i want to keep it at five max for our first campaign i still encourage everyone to build characters. there is a 0% chance we'll be able to find a time that everyone will be available to play, so having more than five people interested is not in any way an issue.

Do I have to kill boars or creatures in the woods or antyhing like that? you don't have to do anything, you're free to play the game however you see fit. of course, so is the rest of your team, and so if they find your lack of commitment disturbing they could turn on you.

before i make a dude i need to know the benefits of both int and wisdom on the scales we'll be playing you can ignore both as a fighter, should have at the very least 14 Wis for a cleric and 14 Int for a wizard, and a rogue it depends on what kind of rogue you're making but i would have at the very least 12 Int 10 Wis. the benefits to any stat is that if you have to make a skill check for a skill that uses it, you get your stat bonus added to the roll. again, on the scales we'll be playing this isn't going to make a huge difference either way. there are also saving throws, and Wisdom bonus factors into your Will save. for spell casters specifically, you get bonus spells with a higher relevant stat and you can't cast certain spells at all if it's not high enough. . my advice is try not to get caught up in the mechanics, focus more on making a character thematically. if we play and like it, we can go a lot more in depth in the future.

Alright, so you've got your characters. What kind of gear will they use? In our game we'll only focus on weapons and armor.
fighter cleric rogue wizard item x x x x dagger x x x x club x x x x staff x x x spear x x x shortbow x x x sling x axe x x sword x x hammer x greatsword x longbow x x x leather armor x x brigandine x plate mail x x buckler x shield I want to stress that this is the gear you can start off with. You can find gear while on the adventure, and you are always allowed to improvise an attack although since none of you are the Jackie Chan class this will almost never be as good as using a proper weapon.
There are five basic ways to use weapons: -One handed, nothing in the off hand. -One handed, shield in the off hand. -One handed, weapon in the off hand. -Two handed melee. -Two handed range.
Trying to use two one handed weapons applies a penalty to hit. You can reduce this penalty by using a light weapon (dagger or axe) in the off hand, although of course those weapons don't hit as hard as grown man weapons. You can also reduce this penalty by being an especially dextrous fighter, but you'll still always have a penalty.
A shield does make it slightly harder to maneuver, but if you're gonna go single one handed and you can use a shield you pretty much always should.
Ranged weapons let you fight from (you guessed it) range, and if the enemy only has melee and never saw that episode of Justified about the 21 foot rule then it's easy pickings. The downside is you only have so much ammo, plus you need dexterity to shoot well and strength to melee well so if your ranged character is reduced to meleeing they'll probably be lousy at it.
There is no best or worst option. This is my design. Various weapons will be better in various situations.
.
The thicker the armor, the harder you are to hurt, but the harder it is to move around. If you want to be a nimble duelist prancing around out there, go light. If you want to stomp into the middle of a fracas and start wailing away at everything, go big.
.
Any questions fire away!
