Welcome to another installment of the Prokorov Report's Draft Recap and GM Grades.
This year was one of the deepest drafts in TMBSL history. While there are no absolute studs, there were more than enough solid players that no GM had an excuse to take a clunker. That didn't stop some of you knuckleheads from making head-scratching selections.
Below is each drafting franchise's grade, a brief description of the support for that grade, and a list of the selections with their draft position and Prokorov Report grade.
Warriors – B
Many feel Okafor was a clear-cut [HASH]1 pick, but those of us in the know at the Report think otherwise. We’ve seen many centers with better grades, especially those that attended less reviled schools, bust out. The saving grace of this draft haul is Caris LeVert, a remarkable scorer that could have gone in the lottery of a weaker draft class.
Jahlil Okafor 1.1 (11)
Kevon Looney 1.15 (10)
Caris LeVert 2.28 (9)
Pistons – A-
This is just an all-around great set of picks for the Pistons. Turner projects to be a very efficient scorer, and Hunter, a smooth shooter from the world capital for smooth shooters, is a great value at the end of the first round.
Myles Turner 1.2 (13)
RJ Hunter 1.23 (12)
Anthony Brown 2.6 (7)
Wolves – D
This is a really unremarkable class. Johnson is a good player and could be one of the best players in this class. Upshaw, however, is not a dynamic player and will likely never see a second contract in TMBSL. In no way was the Report’s issuance of a D grade to this draft class due to the Wolves’s GM’s disrespect for the Report.
Stanley Johnson 1.3 (12)
Robert Upshaw 2.1 (4)
Heat – B-
The Heat go big in an effort to rebuilt. The players they drafted are not exceptional, but the decision to go with big men in the beginning of a tank is a smart move.
Karl Towns 1.4 (11)
Chris Obekpa 2.3 (4)
Magic - B
The year after trading away the best player in TMBSL 4.0 history for peanuts, the Magic try to replace him with a pair of big-name PGs. It remains to be seen which one of these guards will be the real deal, which says a lot about both selections.
Emmanuel Mudiay 1.5 (11)
Tyus Jones 2.4 (9)
Nuggets – B+
In another draft, this class gets a solid A. The Report, however, is trying to avoid grade inflation in a deep draft class. Russell should be an excellent PG for the Nuggets and form a dynamic backcourt with the Black Mamba.
D’Angelo Russell 1.6 (13)
Dakari Johnson 2.2 (8)
Rashad Vaughn 2.7 (8)
Cavs – A-
The Cavs drafted outstanding value with each of their picks. In full rebuild mode, Cleveland shouldn’t be out of the playoffs for too much longer.
Cliff Alexander 1.7 (12)
Willie Cauley-Stein 1.12 (13)
Rondae Hollis-Jefferson 1.24 (11)
Devin Booker 1.29 (9)
Sam Dekker 2.5 (8)
Grizz – A-
If the Grizz had only one pick, they’d have received an A+. Wright is an absolute stud and will is the Report’s front-runner for rookie-of-the-year. The rest of this draft class, which is still very good, brings down the average a little.
Delon Wright 1.8 (15)
Bobby Portis 1.21 (10)
Kennedy Meeks 2.8 (7)
Aaron White 2.9 (8)
Hawks – C
Similarly, if the Hawks wouldn’t have had a second round pick, they would likely have received an A+. Kaminsky may be the next great hybrid forward with exceptional scoring grades and great size. Hammons, however, spent 3 years festering in West Layfayette, and has the grades to prove it. Lest you think the Report is biased against players from Purdue, we objectively graded him out at a 3, which is worse than all-world stinker Glen Davis.
Frank Kaminsky 1.9 (14)
AJ Hammons 2.19 (3)
Suns – B+
After a ho-hum draft, the Suns dip into the ranks of the software players for a head-scratching pick at 2.29. Who is this John Pierce and why did he last till the final pick?
Justice Winslow 1.10 (9)
Josh Smith 1.22 (8)
Dez Wells 2.11 (8)
Jon Pierce 2.29 (17)
Nets – B+
The Nets, who have intimate knowledge of the scouting reports of George Niang, know he will be the best player from the 3013 draft class. The rest of this class, however, is a bit underwhelming.
Georges Niang 1.11 (16)
Tyrone Wallace 1.27 (8)
Jake Layman 1.28 (7)
Ron Baker 2.10 (11)
Bullets - B-
One of Oubre and Herzonja should turn into a starter caliber player, but Walker is an offensive liability. Between his terrible shooting percentages and penchant for TOs, we’ve got to believe the Bullets drafted Walker to lose them a few games over the next couple of years.
Kelly Oubre 1.13 (11)
Mario Herzonja 1.19 (11)
Chris Walker 2.14 (3)
Moussa Diagne 2.28 (5)
Sonics – B
This class is a solid B. Kristaps, however, has the name to become an Odin special. Watch out.
Jerian Grant1.14 (10)
Kristaps Porzingis 1.20 (10)
Hornets – A
Dipping into the software players, the Hornets drag a couple of great looking players out of the draft file. Shelton should start at SG for the Hornets, and if he gets a nice TC, he could make a run at rookie of the year.
Jonah Samake 1.16 (13)
Derek Shelton 1.25 (16)
Christian Wood 2.16 (7)
Raptors – B-
While other GMs may have overlooked Anderson, Pete must have known that Odin has the Hoos star on his fantasy basketball team. I imagine Anderson will get a nice bump coming out of TC. Harrison? Yuck.
Justin Anderson 1.17 (8)
Andrew Harrison 2.17 (4)
Knicks – B
Solid value in Olsen and Nesby. These picks match the Knicks’s GM’s goals for his team – good, but not great.
Deshawn Olsen 1.18 (10)
Vince Nesby 2.18 (11)
Pacers – C
After inheriting the most promising young core in TMBSL, Jerry West has a shot of franchise karma after drafting some of the least promising players in this draft.
Montrezl Harrell 1.26 (6)
Marcus Paige 2.26 (6)
Bucks – A+
Anytime you can draft the best center prospect and the best college PG in the second round, you’re doing something right. Trofie just keeps loading up his very promising roster.
Terrell Morgan 2.12 (15)
Aleksandar Vezenkev 2.13 (7)
Yogi Ferrell 2.22 (7)
76ers – B+
With years of experience in TMBSL drafts, Fason makes a pretty good pick in the middle of the second round. He doesn’t need much help, but Frazier could turn into a trade chip a couple of years in the future.
Michael Frazier 2.15 (9)
Blazers – B+
Let’s be honest, I don’t want to write about these picks and you don’t want to read about them. VanVleet, however, has high-caliber pedigree that could bring a winner’s attitude to a Blazers squad that needs a little nudge over the sim-mountaintop.
Fred VanVleet 2.20 (10)
Joseph Young 2.23 (7)
Mavs – D+
The Mavs scouting department must have been out getting drunk on draft night. It’s not that the Report doesn’t like Harrison, it’s that we hate him. Thompson is going to be begging for a trade out of Dallas a few weeks sharing the court with this shithead.
Aaron Harrison 2.21 (6)
Kings - C
Fresh off a GM of the Year award, 20s uses up some of his goodwill with a homer pick on Petteway. We don’t expect Petteway to play for the Kings, so this is an innocuous pick out of what we suspect is abject sentimentality.
Terran Petteway 2.24 (6)
Clippers – C-
This grade rounds out our bell curve. If you’re looking for justification for such a low grade for a decent looking prospect, we at the Report assume this guy is a terrorist.
Mouhammadou Jaiteh 2.25 (6)
