Greetings TMBSL! Another sim year has arrived and tankers' hopes are high for what looks to be a great draft class. Guard heavy, this class has only one true center in Hasheem Thabeet. Don't fret, though, as Psycho T and Dejaun Blair should be all the big man your franchise needs. Without further ado, we bring to you the 3017 Cuban Report Mock Draft.
1. Hawks
Needs – PG, SG, SF, PF
Steph Curry – PG 21 6'3 185 Davidson C+ A- B- C+ D+ A (17)
The clear top prospect in this draft, and potentially in the last few drafts, Curry is going to be an absolute stud. He and Duke Kaminsky should form a fantastic duo for RW and the Hawks for years to come.
2. Lakers
Needs – PG, SF, PF, C
Blake Griffin PF 20 6'10 251 Oklahoma A D+ C C+ A- A (14)
Harden may the best player available here, but with Kobe locked up for the next half decade, Buster picks Blake Griffin. The former Oklahoma star will help Kobe bring showtime back to LA, and hang dunk contest banners in the Staples Center.
3. Jazz
Needs – PG, SG, SF, PF
James Harden SG 20 6'5 220 Arizona State B B- B- C+ C- A (14)
With the commissioner’s dislike of Harden well known, 2Poor takes a chance on the beard. Will this pick pan out, or will 2Poor take another 5 season hiatus? Tune in in 3017 to find out.
4. Celtics
Needs – SF, PF, C
Hasheem Thabeet C 22 7'3 263 Connecticut C+ D+ D+ A B B (17)
There are some nice point guards remaining, but Barros looks like a stud and dump needs a front line in Boston. With only one true center in this draft, dump takes a chance on Thabeet. He is elite on defense right now, and shows potential to develop into a premier big.
5. Blazers
Needs – PG, SG, SF, C
Ricky Rubio PG 19 6'4 180 Spain C+ C B B+ D+ A (15)
While Portland’s only true stud on the roster is Bob Pettit, they’ve got quite a few good players in RJ Hunter, Justice Winslow, and Clifford Robinson. Ray Felix also might become a contributor. Duc really needs a point guard on this roster and thankfully Ricky falls into his lap. While C outside shooting is a little disturbing (but nothing that a couple of duplicate RCs/SCs can’t fix), the handling and defense grades are outstanding for a 19 year old rookie.
6. Bulls
Needs – PG, SG, SF, C
Tyreke Evans SG/PG/SF 20 6'6 220 Memphis B C C+ B- C A (14/12/12)
It’s been a while since Bruns got a pick this high. Tyreke fills a lot of holes in the Bulls roster, but unfortunately can only play one position. The Report’s multi-billion dollar algorithm likes Evans contributions most at the SG position. While the Bulls may not be ready to compete yet, they are in the Central, so should be prepared for a playoff run with Tyreke and Kemp.
7. Hawks (via Knicks)
Needs – PG, SG, SF, PF
Chase Budinger SG/SF 21 6'7 209 Arizona B+ C C- B- C B (13/11)
RW’s plenty of holes to fill at SG, SF, and PF. With Curry, Kaminsky, and now Budinger, RW is building his own squad of Polar Bears.
8. Bucks
Needs – PG, SG, SF
Ty Lawson PG 22 5'11 195 North Carolina B- C+ B- B- D+ B (9)
Lawson is a little undersized, but it’s hard to argue with these grades. Trof needs a PG, and at this point there are no sure things. Lawson’s respectable inside scoring with D+ rebounding suggests he is not going to compete in any dunk contests any time soon – and that’s a great thing for Milwaukee.
9. Bobcats (via Spurs)
Needs – PG, SG, SF
Gerald Henderson SG 22 6'5 212 Duke B C+ C B- C- B (11)
Odin needs a long-term solution at wing, and takes a shot with Gerald Henderson. Gerald’s inside scoring and defensive prowess should complement the Myles of Dicks in Memphis.
10. Sonics
Needs – PG, SG, SF
DeJuan Blair PF/C 20 6'7 275 Pittsburgh B+ C- D+ B B B (11/11)
Yawn doesn’t need help on the front line, but the heart wants what the heart wants, and Yawn is going to take the tendon-less blackbelt if he’s available here.
11. Sonics (via Thunder)
Needs – PG, SG, SF
DeMar DeRozan SG/SF 20 6'7 220 USC B C C C+ C A (11/9)
DeBest player available at a position of need. DeRozen could turn out to be a great player for Seattle with a couple of TCs under his belt.
12. Nets (via Bobcats)
Needs – Depth
Terrence Williams SG/SF 22 6'6 220 Louisville B- B- B- B- C C (11/9)
There have been back-to-back Louisville players selected. Cocks needs to hedge against losing Niang in FA, and picks a nice looking scoring option in Williams. Everyone in Brooklyn is praying that Williams isn’t called upon to start for the Nets until at least 3023.
13. Hornets
Needs - Depth
Wesley Matthews SG 23 6'5 214 Marquette B C+ C- B- C- B (10)
The Hornets really turned it around in one off-season by signing Dwight and Andrew Harrison, locking up Murray on an amazing contract, and drafting Tex. The Hornets don’t have any immediate needs, and take the best player available in Wes Matthews.
