Shout was discussing the other day whether the East or West had better GMs. Well, here I am to weigh in. Feel free to nit pick and point out where I am wrong. First I wanted to rank each conference from top to bottom, then go head to head. Coming tomorrow: East vs. West match ups and commentary.
East:
1.Trof
For a long time Trofie was a very underrated GM, but imo he has done a really good job being consistent in 4.0. Easily the best GM without a title in the league, much like dirt he’s always tinkering with his roster to find the best fit. Also a top tier human being.
2.Fason
Fason has been the most successful scorched earth tanker in the league building a perennial contender by making his roster a barren wasteland for years. Very good drafting and a few key other moves have kept him at or near the top of the league for a while now.
3.Bruns
The Bulls have had a very good run in 4.0 at the hands of Bruns. With a bit of luck he’d have a couple rings in his trophy case but unfortunately for him that hasn’t been the case. He also didn’t make the mistake of holding on too long and got a pretty good return for his roster aside from Emeka who left in FA.
4.Heebs
As a new GM previously under the tutelage of one me, Heebs has quickly grasped the league and his squad is a main stay atop the East. He makes sound decisions with his roster after he learned early what moves to make and not to make. Considering the prowess of the former Nets GM, it’s nice to see competence in Brooklyn.
5.Pete
Pete has been a model of stability for a previously tumultuous franchise in Toronto. He brought the Raptors a title and more success than anyone has in the history of the league.
6.Dump
Dump is easily the most improved gm from 2.0 to 4.0. He’s been a hell of a lot more competent, and has even shown some signs of self awareness and maturity. He’s built some pretty solid Celtics squads and has earned some respect around the league.
7.KN
KN has had an up and down stretch as GM of the Bullets, a change in his draft fortunes has netted him a nice young core at this point. He doesn’t seem to ruffle any feathers, but for years has been lacking the one or two moves to take his team to that really elite level. Hopefully for him his patience pays off this season.
8.RV
For a time a lot of us didn’t know if RV was actually still alive. Recently he’s made his presence felt again and has a very good team. Whats lacking here is consistency of team and participation both. It remains to be seen what will happen after his core ages and his team needs a rebuild again.
9.MJ
MJ is a great guy who is well liked by a lot of the league. As far as GM-ing goes, he’s in that middle tier of guys, the only difference being he has a championship. He’s built a pretty good team around Shareef at this point as well, but will need better PG play and might need to move Delon to SG to see the fruits of his labor.
10.Canes
This is the same guy who gave me a 3 somehow on Fason’s most recent gm rankings. Without holding too much of a vendetta for that, Canes has always been the guy who is afraid to make the big move to put his team over the top, but he’s always there wondering why they aren’t better. Ironic…dontcha think?
11.HT
A lot of the league thought that HT was a tiger that had changed his stripes at the beginning of 4.0, but as time wears on it seems that not much has changed, aside from him not handing out massive contracts. He seems like a great guy but on the hardwood his teams have had a difficult time putting it together since that title which seems like eons ago.
12.Odin
The jury for me is still out on Odin’s return as a Gm. He’s at least making an effort to build around Myles, but he also has knowledge of a lot of the players in the league and how they were built. As time goes on we’ll see how he’s able to build his team.
13.JW
The logo hasn’t really been heard from all that much since his return to the league. He’s a nice enough guy, he’s just never around. He was handed the keys to a franchise with what seemed to be a great future, and then that disintegrated in his hands. A lot of roster destruction, but not much construction in my opinion.
14.Eric
Outside of his team, I love what eric brings to the league. I enjoy reading the articles he writes, and the stuff he posts in the off topic board. I just don’t know what the hell he’s doing with his team…ever, and I’m not sure he does either. That or he just doesn’t care about his win loss record and just likes to hang out.
15.RW
What can be said about the hawks that hasn’t already been said about the Holocaust?
West:
1.Dil
Though dil doesn’t spend a whole lot of time on the league he somehow is able to build his roster, not tinker with it, and win…a lot. The results of his latest rebuild have yet to be seen, but if history dictates the future, it’ll be a success.
2.20s
20s took on a roster of total shit and has molded it into one of the most consistent teams in the league. He makes sound trades and doesn’t really make any mistakes. He’s also a great draft master and overall good guy. He definitely has the respect of the league.
3.Druce
I remain the only gm to win a title with 2 different cores, but the same strategy that led to my 2nd could be the downfall of that very team: tearing it down too early. The Okafor/Catfish for Dream/Bol swap looked not bad on paper, but then Okafor took off as a player and shot that to shit. Those trades along with the Lance one are what put me below 20s imo.
4.Ank
Ank has had the best teams in the league to not take down a title, in my opinion. Where some gms are gunshy to make the big move, ank is the opposite. He makes his moves very calculated and has built a great team in Phoenix after a bit of a rough start.
5.2poor
2poors hiatus from the league certainly didn’t help him and his legacy. At the beginning of 4.0 the Jazz were a force to be reckoned with, but that all changed with some bad luck in FA. As of now, after some time away, the Jazz are building up for another run here in a few years with some great draft picks by 2poor.
6.Dirt
Finally all of Dirt’s moves paid off in a championship. Dirt definitely deserved it with all the work he’s put into building his squad. That work ethic though has sometimes led to him getting into holes or misjudging his moves.
7.Buster
Since being in the upper echelon in 2.0, Buster has fallen off a bit in 4.0. His most recent tank job is an ongoing project that doesn’t appear to have an end in sight. We will see if Buster can channel the GM of old and turn the Lakers around.
8.Ian
Ian is all sizzle and no steak. He has knowledge of the software up and down, but the fact remains that he hasn’t won a title in a long ass time. No doubt he knows what he’s talking about when it comes to grades and the software, but how he hasn’t been able to turn this library of knowledge into success is kind of mind boggling.
9.
After a very lengthy tank job, contended for a few years but has since fallen into the purgatory that is good enough to make the playoffs, not good enough to win it all. has surprisingly stuck with his core for a while, but waited too long to acquire a great point guard. Great guy, inconsistent gm.
10.Ocho
Another great guy, who is just now figuring things out with the Warriors. Doesn’t help he took over a team vacated by devine. Has yet to make a “wow, he’s going for a title” move which it appears his franchise could use.
11.Duc
I feel like I could just copy what I wrote about Ocho outside of the devine part. Duc has the best young core in the league now though, and it’ll be interesting to see what he does with it.
12.GBG
New guy but has made some really good draft picks and decisions with his roster. Tough luck with Harrison going down, but the good thing for him is it wasn’t a season ender. Time will tell whether he can sustain this success.
13.Yawn
Truthfully, I don’t think yawn gives a shit about his teams performance. Makes a lot of questionable moves and just generally doesn’t make much of an effort. Still a nice guy to chat with in shout, etc.
14.Victor
Victor would have been better off heeding the advice of the league and run his trades by someone when he first started. The Spurs lack a real direction or plan, and Victor could use the advice of an experienced Gm to help him with the ins and outs of the league.
