Alright let's talk about it in here.

I thought it was good, not great. But they positioned it well so that the next 2 parts can be awesome.
I was fine with blatantly ripping off A New Hope up until the point that they revealed Death Star 3.0. Come on, give us something new.
Phasma was a Jar Jar level character.

I'll be pretty turned off if Rey is Luke's kid.

Yeah, I don't want that either although it seems like they are heavily pointing us that way.
Just seems like a lot of trouble to come up with some backstory where she's stranded on Jakku for not much of a payoff (being Luke's kid doesn't improve the character at all).
Rey is awesome though. Looks like Kiera Knightley.

thought it was a lot like the original movies, and a lot funnier than I was expecting which I liked. Really loved it overall though
Thought the Death Star 3.0 was kinda dumb, and again how easily it was destroyed baffles me.. only other thing I was slightly annoyed with is this was such a "set up" movie for the next ones. would have liked a bit of more self contained story/ending
love Rey as a character, think she is great and her along with Fin will be fun to watch. Kylo Ren I actually really liked. found his character to be believable and think the actor did a great job. interested to get more of his masters story and learn about that

I thought it was very good, was pretty impressed with it to be honest. I was a little confused when they reveiled Kylo Ren as Ben. I was not aware that they were not following the other story line. I thought as I was watching that Rey was actually Jaina and that Kylo Ren was Jacen, The twins of Han and Leia.

making it mirror IV so much was pretty lame imo

Phasma was lame but at least she was lame w/ very little screen time.
I really enjoyed it, think they did a great job of establishing these new characters. I think one of the biggest reasons I liked it so much is that I had just rewatched the prequels, but I was thrilled at how real everything felt.
Outside of a few characters (the bar owner, Snoke, the scrapyard owner), everything was either human or puppet, and they shot so much more on location. Night and day from the prequels, which were almost entirely green screen. I also loved seeing battles, like the one at the bar/cantina, where they mixed air assault and ground attacks.
Sad that Han won't be featured in any of the others, but seeing Harrison Ford in that role again was great, and it was the first time in forever that he didn't seem like he was mailing it in for a paycheck.
The lightsaber battles were so much better here than the prequels. Glad we're done w/ the crazy acrobatics.

If she's Luke's daughter, that seems pretty fucked up to just leave her on a planet w/ very little resources and no one to look after her

In the EU story line, they had 3 children, Jacen, Jaina and Anakin.

In the EU story line, they had 3 children, Jacen, Jaina and Anakin. nothing from before May 2014 is canon except the main series films and The Clone Wars shit

I thought it was great. It was definitely a set up film but I thought they set it up really well. I would put it no worse than #3 in the series. I think Rian Johnson is brilliant and fully expect him to make episode VIII so well it's in the debate with V for the best one.
There's been a lot of discussion on TMB about Rey and her family. One thing brought up a lot that I have no issue with is that Star Wars is about the Skywalkers so I don't have any issues with Rey being Lukes daughter if she is.
Wasn't trilled with Starkiller Base but I also don't really have an alternative solution for a weapon powerful enough to destroy a system.
Phasma being Jar Jar level is a joke. Nothing is even close to Jar Jar level. Phasma is more Boba Fett. Disappointing as I saw potential for more but on screen I was left wanting far more and not impressed. I hope that in the follow ups that Phasma is used much better or killed off quickly.
I loved Rey. I think she's going to be an amazing character. I loved Finn. He felt very relatable and while I'd like him to be a force user I'm fine if he isn't. Enjoyed Kylo Ren a lot and think I will enjoy getting to watch him grow as a villain. Poe Dameron is amazing. Love him. He might end up being my favorite character BB8 is the best.

I agree it was solid, but not excellent. My main complaint is that it just recycled a ton of ideas from a New Hope. It felt like lazy story boarding to me.
I also agree, however, that it set up a ton of material for future movies that could be even better.

Also, I couldn't get past Kylo Ren being Adam from Girls. It was impossible to take him seriously as a villain.

Phasma was hilariously bad. Don't insult Boba Fett like that, he was cool.
Shows why women shouldn't be in the military. :hottakes:
"Turn off the shields!"
"lol ok"

Boba Fett is so overrated. People act like he's some ultimate badass but in the films he was lame

Really enjoyed the movie. Laughed hardest at C3PO photobombing the reunion between Han and Leia and the lighter thumbs up from BB8.
Seems like we are heading for some sort of family relationship between Luke or Leia to Rey.
All 3 new actors nailed there roles. Ridley was the best of the 3. Boyega is getting a bad rap imo. I thought he nailed the part of being a guy way in over his head and overcompensating with false bravado

I love Daisy Ridley
And Adam Driver was awesome as usual. He nails everything that he is in.
Cried when Han Solo died

Boyega did a good job. I was a little annoyed at how often he was gasping for air, but other than that I didn't really have any problems with his performance.
I didn't mind that they borrowed the main plot points from A New Hope because I didn't feel like they were beating us over the head with it. I was worried going in that it would feel like a Star Wars Quotes/References greatest hits, (These aren't the droids you're looking for, don't get cocky kid, it's a trap, etc.). Instead, they borrowed themes while making it feel new. I'll be disappointed if Episodes XIII and IX do the same though.

agree with people above.
i think the new cast members are perfect for the series.. was a big Oscar Isaac fan after Show Me a Hero and only like him more after this. Rey was amazing and Boyega did really well, excited to see whats in store for his character
same feelings about Phasma, just seemed like that character was going to be used more, maybe she will in the proceeding movies.
I think the inner struggle that Kylo is going through is very interesting and enjoyed how it was acted, think it will be interesting to see him grow into the villain or turn things around

I quite enjoyed it, although it was basically a scene by scene remake of the original. During the planning sequence i was waiting for someone to break character and just start laughing at how similar it was.
If the two previous death stars were destroyed by designed weak points, why in the holy fuck would you then have a massive exposed area for people to target? Also if the republic seemingly doesn't give a fuck what the first order does, why not blow up the fucking resistance and take out their whole first strike plan?
I thought Adam Driver was excellent as Lord Emo Sith. God, he's so whiny and punchable.
Why is there is a Resistance, a republic, and the first order. I'm failing to understand what separates the resistance from the republic. Also, how does the first order literally hijack a planet, go bebop onto planets murder villages and go completely unnoticed?
I will be so fucking angry if they make Rey part of the skywalker clan. Christ the entire fucking universe is shaped by a family that is really really shitty at parenting.

i enjoyed it. the only part i felt was too reminiscent of the original was the walkway. as soon as you saw that you knew someone was gonna be plummeting off it. the rest i feel is overstated: -okay so they were both on desert planets and happened upon galactically relevant droids. point. -but Luke was a family farmer and wanted desperately to leave (remember his toy empire shuttle?) while Rey was a scavenger and wanted desperately to stay -and Rey had no Obi Wan analog until AFTER leaving the planet, and even then he didn't train her so much as be nice to her -Finn obviously has no Episode IV parallel at all, the closest is to Han Solo between the jacket and the "well this isn't my fight i'm out of here well just kidding i'm back" but it's not close -and as for the Starkiller weak point, it WASN'T weak. the Death Star was destroyed with exactly two proton torpedos, it took twenty explosives and multiple bombing runs and Poe flying around inside and wrecking the joint to damage the MacGuffin enough to overload it, PLUS the only way they got the planetary shield down to begin with was a 100% impossible "we're gonna fly in well above light speed and i'm going to verbally say NOW to time when we come out, even though it takes light .0005 seconds to get from the edge of the shield to the edge of the planet" maneuver. If she's Luke's daughter, that seems pretty fucked up to just leave her on a planet w/ very little resources and no one to look after her it sounded to me in the flashback like Snoke was the one scolding her, i would guess a relationship (even if not familial) with him Really enjoyed the movie. Laughed hardest at C3PO photobombing the reunion between Han and Leia and the lighter thumbs up from BB8. the lighter thumbs up was so good that it totally made up for the horrendous "droid please" line that preceded it.

Kylo Ren was amazing. Love his character.
Glad Han Solo died. Ford wanted to be killed off anyways.
Annoyed that they ripped off ANH but whatever. I enjoyed it regardless.
Rey is the shit. Hope she isn't Luke's daughter. That would be so lame. You're telling Luke has just been roaming space picking up strange? C'mon. I'm hoping she's a Kenobi
