i'm glad you brought up the american community survey, because 3 years ago i worked for it and conducted it! thats great that thats the data it's produced, but i can assure you that most people in poorer neighborhoods do not respond to the survey, so the data is 100% skewed.

ANK1990 that doesn't say how many children SURVIVED though, only how many were BORN. 1958 is by far the lowest cohort even when controlling for income levels, surely that suggests that the dramatically higher survival rate of modern children is a factor, which in turn suggests that the dramatically higher survival rate of rich children is a factor. both tables are coherent.

I think poor families will naturally skewer to the lower end of the spectrum on that scale
