Andrew Wiggins is on track to shoot 300 threes at under 30% and have more turnovers than assists in his first two years in the NBA. That sounds pretty bad, but has it happened before? As it turns out, yes! Exactly twice. Here are those players, with their first two years listed first and their performance afterwards listed second:
#1
made 29.8% of 372 attempts, 421 assists to 471 turnovers, +0.4 on/off, 17 PER on 29 USG, .094 WS/48
made 35.0% of 3.4 atmpts/g, 1.14 assist / turnover ratio, +3.0 on/off, 22 PER on 32 USG, .144 WS/48
#2
made 28.8% of 337 attempts, 154 assists to 163 turnovers, -1.9 on/off, 13 PER on 22 USG, .025 WS/48
made 35.9% of 2.7 atmpts/g, 1.02 assist / turnover ratio, +1.4 on/off, 17 PER on 21 USG, .125 WS/48
Wiggins (projected)
made 28.3% of 389 attempts, 323 assists to 355 turnovers, +2.0 on/off, 15 PER on 25 USG, .049 WS/48
The forecast on the shooting side is a lot rosier than I expected: neither player ever became a good shooter, but they got up to league average.
The forecast on the passing side is as bleak as I expected. Neither player ever became anywhere near a good passer.
Both players were below average in all three composite stats, and both players improved in all three, though never to elite levels.
Also of note is that both players were small forwards and did some work at power forward: #1 is 6'8", #2 is 6'9". Wiggins is listed at shooting guard but is 6'8" and given his skill set will probably end up at small forward or even power forward as the NBA evolves smaller.
