So here are the players to make All-NBA teams as rookies since the year after the merger: Tim Duncan, 1998, First Team forward David Robinson, 1989, Third Team center Michael Jordan, 1985, Second Team guard Larry Bird, 1980, First Team forward Phil Ford, 1979, Second Team forward Walter Davis, 1978, Second Team forward And here's the distribution: So it would be unusual though not unheard of for KAT to make it, and it used to be a lot more common even when there were only two All-NBA teams pre-1989. . As for bench guys, it turns out to be not that rare for guys who came off the bench at any point in their careers to go on to All-NBA recognition, but to get it in the specific seasons they came off the bench to any real degree is quite rare. The only ones I've found: Manu Ginobili, 2008, Third Team guard, 31% starts (and the only Sixth Man of the Year winner to also be All-NBA) Dennis Rodman, 1995, Third Team forward, 53% starts (and only played 49 games, pretty weird)
