The Mock Draft to End All Mock Drafts
How great are the NCAA finals this year. MJ, Walter Davis, and Tom LaGarde at UNC vs Hakeem, and Birdsong in Houston.
1. 76ers
Bernard King
Age: 21
Height: 6'7"
Weight: 205
Position: SF
School: Tennessee
A- B- C- B B- C
76ers are in shambles. GM Fason should have known his team was in trouble when he was building around a cokehead, and a pimp. This draft may not be loaded, but Fason can add a superstar alongside Brian Grant who's putting up a solid 16/10/3 on good percentages. The new King of Philly looks like Shane Battier 2.0. Too rarely do commishes create very good players with low potentials, I like the aversion from the norm. One interesting scenario Fason could play out, trade down to two or three, take a solid player like Nixon/Johnson/Birdsong, get a large bundle of picks in return, and tank again next year leading to a top 3 pick in an absolutely loaded draft. King will be the absolute favorite for ROTY, I'd be utterly shocked if it went to anyone else.
2. Grizzlies
Marques Johnson
Age: 21
Height: 6'7"
Weight: 218
Position: SF
School: UCLA
B C C B B- A
I come back to TMBSL, and the Grizzlies are at the bottom again, sad to see. Druce will be vying for the #1 spot. The dim light on this roster is Clifford Rozier who is putting up solid numbers but on quite poor percentages. Johnson is BPA, and Druce needs talent. Johnson looks like the next Dan Issel, very good but not great. If Druce can pump points into his outside shot, or Johnson's outside shot can jump up from the dreaded C, Johnson could be a bonafide stud. Bust potential is low but need to get that outside above a C to become worthy of the #2 pick.
3. Suns
Norm Nixon
Age: 22
Height: 6'2"
Weight: 170
Position: PG
School: Duquesne
C+ C+ B B- D+ A
Big dropoff here. Nixon is far from bust proof. Ankly needs a PG, and Norm is a suitable choice. He'll need points pumped into him, but with a good TC to scoring grades Norm can be a force. The real battle will happen during the season, trying to get into the top 2. 5 teams all have win percentages .200 or lower. Nixon is the lone upper echelon PG in this draft, he won't fall far.
4. Pelicans
Jack Sikma
Age: 22
Height: 6'11"
Weight: 230
Position: C
School: Illinois Wesleyn
C+ B- D+ C+ B- A
Oops name seem more like an allegory for his team. Sikma is an addition the Pellies desperately need. Sikma doesn't particularly standout in any category, but does have that luscious B- outside, a rarity among big men. If Sikma can develop his mediocre big man categories C+/C+/B- he could become a scoring machine. Most likely scenario is Oops fails to put points into him, he hits a low ceiling in one of the big man categories and is a solid offensive player with a major deficiency.
5. Magic
Walter Davis
Age: 23
Height: 6'6"
Weight: 193
Position: SG
School: UNC
B- B C- C+ C- B
MJ is one of many teams tanking, quite prevalent this year, perhaps in an flurry to prepare for the lauded 84 draft of next season. With that being said Walter Davis is the most TMBSL ready prospect outside of Bert. Davis could also get a +1 bump at SF with his good size, something that could rise his stock in the coming weeks. B outside scoring is delectable in any prospect, and GM MJ is quoted on Davis “Still feel like he is going to shoot an absurd amount of 3's in the software.” Whoever does take Davis will be all but eliminated from the Jordan sweepstakes, something these tankers will keep in mind, nobody wants to get stuck taking Bowie.
6. Bullets
James Edwards
Age: 20
Height: 7'
Weight: 225
Position: C
School: Washington
C D+ D B- B A
Another roster with a handful of decent young guys and utterly nothing else. The Bullets have nothing in the chamber in their front court, and James Edwards is a safe pick. His potential as a rebound/block shots guy is sky high. His offensive game is lacking, and he'll unlikely ever be a 20 PPG guy but with time and points pumped into him Edwards can be competent on the offensive end.
7. Nuggets
Tree Rollins
21
7'1"
235
C
Clemson
C+ D+ D+ B C A
Jerry is livid right now that Edwards got taken off the board. He wanted the known commodity, the perfect pairing for the offensive minded Glenn Robinson. He may have gotten the better player though. Tree has been a star in TMBSL past, and while lacking the rebounding grades, can develop an offensive game. Tree has that 7'1 size that GM's covet in TMBSL, combined with his B defense could foreshadow the league's next leader in blocks.
8. Knicks
Otis Birdsong
Age: 22
Height: 6'3"
Weight: 190
Position: SG/PG
School: Houston
B- C+ C C+ D A
Skrouse is jumping for joy right now, Birdsong fell. The prospect who many scouts are ecstatic for has his own drawbacks too. He's undersized for a SG, the position he'll begin at. Yes, he's listed at PG too but those C handles are an ominous sign. The Knicks are hoping for a big TC, Birdsong is a boom or bust prospect.
9. Heat
Tom LaGarde
Age: 21
Height: 6'10"
Weight: 240
Position: C
School: North Carolina
C- D D+ B B- A
Canes is a newcomer to the tanking bandwagon. There's few quality players left in this draft, but LaGarde is a future Yinka. He's a poor man's James Edwards. LaGarde will not have an offensive game of any sort, but that can be a positive when used correctly. His 6'10 stature is a bit disconcerting but we're getting towards the end of the lotto in a weak draft.
10. Hawks
T.R. Dunn
21
6'4"
192
SG
Alabama
C B- C- B- C A
This is the cliff. C is a daunting grade to overcome for scoring in TMBSL. If Dunn can go +1 inside in TC the Hawks are in good shape, if not Dunn could go to the scrap heap. RW is coming off his controversial trade with Bruns and is in a win now mode, lacking picks in the next three seasons. Dunn should be ready as a good defender off the bench right away.
11. Raptors
Greg Ballard
Age: 21
Height: 6'7"
Weight: 215
Position: SF
School: Oregon
C+ B- C C+ C+ B
Ballard is going to be a solid role player. He doesn't have any weaknesses but his strengths are no where to be found too. New GM Pete is just going for BPA, and Ballard is just that.
12. Warriors
Ernie Grunfeld
21
6'6"
210
SG
Tennessee
C+ C+ C- C+ D+ A
Devine goes with Ernie, fitting because you know Bert and Ernie are gay, and so is Devine. But, actually Ernie is a Bankz special, all that's left at this point. There's a chance that Odin gives him some solid potential based on his awe inspiring flow.
13. Lakers
Kent Benson
Age: 22
Height: 6'10"
Weight: 235
Position: C
School: Indiana
C+ D+ D+ C+ C+ A
Another Bankz special. A little surprised that his grades aren't a bit higher with this weak class. If you don't have a lotto trade away your pick now, you're welcome.
