The Premise of this article is very simple. 6 gm's answered questions anonymously. Most of you already know who is participating. However, in order to make it as difficult as possible for people to figure out who said what, I am not going to reveal the actual list of who participated. The only person who knows the full list other than myself is Odin for the purposes of giving out the RC points. The answers are also randomized after each question to provide another layer of anonymity. It is real simple to differentiate one answer from the next. The first answer is brown, the next is blue, then brown again and so forth. If you are confused I do not know what to tell you.
1) Who is your least favorite person in TMBSL to see in shout? Why? What is is about them that annoys you/pisses you off. Serious question, if you had the power to banish said person from the league, would you?
It might be RW. I don't think it really has anything to do with him but people just destroy anything he does or says. It's just complete gang mentality when he shouts. Now, he definitely brings a lot of it onto himself because he has to offer his opinion on everything.
So this answer basically goes against the theme of this roundtable, but I don't really hate seeing anyone in shout. I accept that everyone has their own quirks and styles and that is what makes shout and the league fun. I don't see anyone is in shout and instantly get annoyed. If I had to pick someone, it is probably RW but mostly because of how everyone else reacts to him than RW himself. I don't hate him like most of the league, but that doesn't mean he is without fault for his shouting behavior. If I see him, I can count on a long pointless argument about something that doesn't matter. And that is pretty annoying. So I guess I do have an answer: RW.
Would I banish him? Nope, I think he has done a pretty good job as a GM in 4.0 and he is still entertaining to have in the league.
I don't have a least favorite single person in shout, but I cringe when I see a string of posts between RW and Ian. Usually that means there is some bullshit argument about Richard Washington's eFG% or some other meaningless stat and I completely tune out. RW will back a losing argument until the cows come home, and Ian definitely has a knack for diving down rabbit holes of frivolity. The two of them together equals disaster. That said, I don't thnk either should be banished, I just wish they would resolve whatever stupid arguments they have in less than 30 shout posts.
Devine. There's really no point in anything he does. He sucks as a person. He sucks as a GM. He just sucks. Is he trying to make a point? If so, what is it? If not, then what is he doing? Yes, I would absolutely kick him out of the league if I could.
IanBoyd. If he's on it just means you're gonna see a lot of condescension, humblebrags, not-so-humblebrags, and requests for sims. Seriously who has the fucking time to sit around and pester 28 people to meet a deadline HOURS in advance. Get a life dude. But no I would not banish him because he's good for the league and he's doing the things no one else will or would think to do.
My least favorite person in shout is Devine. His two beer limit, fake drunk, no spelling midget ass wanting to fight everybody act gets tired pretty quickly. I don't think there's a member of this board that wouldn't just annihilate the fuck out of him. There are days I wish I could banish him, and never have to put up with his shit tier gm'ing, but today is not that day. At least he is somewhat active even though those times of activity are filled with shitty roster moves and unbearable shouting.
2) Who is your least favorite person to deal with regarding the actual league? Why? Do they offer shitty trades? Do they never respond to PMs? Same as question one, if you could kick them out of TMBSL, would you?
canesfan, stop hilariously overvaluing your own assets. Rv, sign on more frequently than Bankz. trofie sometimes likes to send offers and then not reply after you have, or at least not in a time sensitive fashion. sometimes RW can be a canesfan-lite with his hilariously bad offers. finally, dump is hard to deal with because i never know if his offers/messages are genuine.
I find it really hard to get deals done with Trofie sometimes. If you don't take his offer he also takes it really fucking personally. I mean I guess I get but nobody has really bothered me so far. It could be that I have tried to sell pieces that are wanted so it's not that bad. I do think Dil sends some pretty horrific offers. He might actually be Morey.
Canes is pretty frustrating to negotiate with. He overvalues assets and seems to think that trades should always be one sided in his favor. I understand not wanting to pay too much for players or draft picks, but I also don't have an IQ of potato. It takes a few rounds of saying no before you can approach actual trade negotiations. Would be ridiculous to kick him out though, I don’t think anyone here should be kicked out at this point.
For the most part I like dealing with everyone in the league. True, some guys are challenging to deal with to moves done, but that's part of what makes the league fun. Some guys have unrealistic prices when it comes to their players but you can't really knock a gm for what they value their players at, it's their team. Most the time if I inquire about a player and the starting price is IMO outrageous, I'll just move on and try to find another deal I can work with. I will say that last off season dealing with 2poor was pretty frustrating when trying to get Barry. He was taking my offer and telling other gm's what they had to do to beat my offer, and if they didn't top it then I would be getting Barry and unbeatable. Not my brand of gm'ing, but to each his own I guess.
devine, I have only talked trade with him a couple times, but it was awful each time. It basically seemed like he wasn't even taking it seriously and would just respond to rejections of his offers with "why" or something. And then he started flooding my PM inbox with like 1 word PMs until I quit responding. Don't really have much of a desire to trade him with him in the future.
Most of the dudes I don't like dealing with have left the league at this point. Corky is gone. Bankz isn't here for now. Zpz isn't here to refuse to trade with me.
3) How would you evaluate Commish Odin so far in 4.0? What is the think you like about his reign the most? The Least?
Odin's been really good as commish. He doesn't waver when he makes a ruling, but is willing to hear out arguments for the opposing view and take them under consideration. I think the most important thing for someone in this kind of role is to be willing and able to take control of a situation while avoiding becoming a dictator. It's easy to put everything up to a vote, and it's also easy to make any decision unilaterally. Odin's balanced a good line between the two.
As for my least favorite thing (assuming the inconsistent sims are a thing of the past) is that one GM has an obvious advantage because of Odin. I don't know how close Tyler is to Odin, but he seems to know exactly is who Odin will favor in terms of player development. He's nailed draft picks and free agents since creation, and clearly some of that is because of his knowledge of the commish's preferences. Nothing Odin can really do about that, I don't blame him for favoring the players he likes, but it's an issue that I doubt we'd run into if anyone else was commissioner.
I've loved Odin as a commish so far. He can be hard headed, but I'm the exact same way. I like how willing he is to restructure the league to make it better for gm's and doesn't mind putting in the work to do so. People bitch about the inconsistency of the sims, but I really don't give a shit. Odin has been dealing with some things out of the norm lately, so it will eventually get back to normal. Have a little fucking patience. I will say that my least favorite part is sometimes I think he is a little too experimental when it comes to certain things.
I think Odin has done a fantastic job as commissioner. The thing I like about his reign the most is that he seems to genuinely enjoy being commish. That could change as time goes on I suppose, but it gets pretty annoying when the commish complains about having to do everything that comes along with the job. I know that it is a lot of work so I understand anyone who does complain, but I don't need to hear about it every time you have to do work for the league. Odin hasn't been like that at all and that is nice. The other thing that I have enjoyed about him is that he is pretty open to listen to ideas and listens to what the people want. He isn't too stubborn or rigid to where everything is his way or the highway. He also doesn't seem to be overly emotional or reactionary which is good during conflict. What do I like the least? I guess not knowing when sims will be, but that has some advantages too I believe. It makes people sign on to the board more often to check if a sim is up which increases league activity. It is pretty hard to have any complaints with Odin right now as the league is as active as ever.
decent. He gets a little bossy sometimes. Like, we're not children. Stop the occasional mom act. Enforce rules consistently and sim at a decent hour. Also I think his solution to curbing inflation was retarded. Other than that, outstanding job
I think Odin has done a fantastic job. He doesn't bitch a lot like MJ and Ian did. He gets the draft file done in a timely manner and he isn't afraid to change stuff as we go. I honestly love that the most with him. He also doesn't freak out when he makes a mistake in free agency or something like that. It's very calm like well, lets do it this way and boom it's resolved. The only thing I don't like are the 1-3am sims but the board seems to be really active all the time so is it really a bad thing? Don't think so.
6.5/10. Sims are irregular and he's a bit too hostile occasionally. However we do seem to move through the season fairly quickly and despite superstars having high grades we haven't really seen much inflation yet. Perhaps 6.5 is too harsh but he has a good few things to improve upon. I do think he will get there.
4) Mr. Pole Smoker catches a lot of shit on TMBSL. Is it deserved? Why/Why Not?
He deserves some of it, but not all of it. People read everything he says and does through a filter because of his past reputation (which is earned). Therefore, a lot of stuff people give RW shit (things he says, moves he makes) for they wouldn't react nearly the same way if someone else was doing it. That doesn't mean it is completely wrong. As I said, his reputation precedes him and that reputation has been earned. That said, I try to compartmentalize and only evaluate him on what I have seen in 4.0. He has been a good GM. He goes overboard on patting himself on the back, but some of that is tongue-in-cheek and I'm not sure if everyone realizes it. The tongue in cheek self-fellating comes from an actual sense of not being recognized highly enough by his peers. So while he does it in a joking manner, I believe it is because deep down he does think he is being underrated by everyone and it bugs him. /psychoanalysis
That said, he can be annoying as fuck with arguing on and on and on about minutia as I mentioned earlier. Seriously, pointless shit will just go on and on with him when it really doesn't matter. And as a poster on TMB, he can go fuck himself. But like I said, I compartmentalize and he isn't that bad of a GM. But go fuck yourself RW
Not really. I think, the dude is a fairly good, GM but he says some, really stupid shit sometimes. Plus what, is the deal with all of, those commas? How much, does he really know, about the landlord lobby in Ark,ansas? Maybe he's smarter than all, of us but we,re just too stupid to realize it, Nah he's probably just a major, stoner.
Yes and no. When he does something stupid and everyone says it's stupid, but he continues to defend the move, then he deserves the royal rumble verbal ass kicking that we put on him. On the flip side, he is putting a winner on the sim court and there's a lot of other gm's that have failed to do that.
I actually don't get a lot of the RW hate. He's pretty obstinate in arguments and takes some really stupid stances, but not nearly bad enough to compensate for the amount of shit he catches. Every trade he makes is immediately destroyed, and every comment he makes is crushed. I like having people like him around, if only to create discussion. That being said, I have no idea how that guy has a degree in journalism and he deserves every insult lobbed his way about grammar or the lack of skill in his writing. He really is a terrible, writer.
absolutely. When you are a grown ass man that's studying to be a journalist and has the worst grammar on the board, you know you probably haven't done a lot of things right. He whines incessantly. He's basically just a cunt. Having said that I like having him in the league because he's always trying to be competitive and his personality causes conflict which I like to see more of.
Yes and no. He definitely made some people look dumb for how he built his team but that team has not done shit in the playoffs. It's not like he had a bunch of options since Ward traded away every single future until 4002 it seems like. Now, he should probably not sit there and just argue every fucking thing that comes up. Just pick your battles because that shit gets really fucking old. It's exhausting.
5) Same question concerning Devine.
he deserves a lot of shit for all the boneheaded moves he's made lately, but I find his simple humor and the reactions it illicits pretty fucking hilarious. If you're still responding to him at this point, you deserve more ridicule than him for being an idiot.
I mean, he is a shit tier GM but I find him entertaining. So if he catches shit for being annoying, I don't think that is deserved because I find him entertaining. However, when he catches shit for being a terrible GM, that is completely true. He hasn't made a single move in this league where I thought "oh wow, that is a nice move devine". He also has made a bunch of terrible moves, isn't particularly active (with regard to making moves, getting shit in on time, etc) despite being on the site all the time posting and shouting. I have heard a lot of people refer to his team as mediocre, I think that is being kind. Mediocre is reserved for the purgatory level teams that are at least consistently making the playoffs but can't go anywhere and don't have a real way to get better (i.e. Hornets). Devine has been worse than mediocre. And not bad enough to tank. Just the worst. The Mona Lisa Saperstein of TMBSL.
But I love him being in a league for entertainment because I like the guy.
Yes. At least in 2.0 he was aggressive about building a good team but now he's just aggressive in shout to make up for his tiny dick. His presence here is becoming increasingly pointless.
I don't think Devine has made one solid move in 4.0. That's about all I have to say about that.
I cannot figure out what to make of Devine so far in 4.0. He's either so bored that he's just fucking around to get a rise out of us, or he's completely lost all sense of what he's doing. His moves make no sense, and he seems to relish everyone hating him. I think he's been legitimately upset after whiffing on a few picks and that's driven him to take it out on the rest of the league via shitty moves. I enjoy his stupid jokes and shout bravado though
I think Devine is catching shit because he was pretty damn solid before 4.0. We all know he fucks with people in shout and it's usually entertaining but it does piss some people off. Most of the annoyance is that Devine is just sitting there not even trying to win. He tries to tank then signs John Lucas? I mean why did you do that? You could probably tank one more year to gather an asset. Lucas just takes up cap and maybe wins you 3-5 more games thus fucking you over. Could mean 6th spot in draft to 10th.
6. Dump has had a colored history in TMBSL. What are your thoughts on the Celtics GM?
He needs to get high occasionally. Really does. However, he's been pretty bearable lately despite the cuntiness immediately after he raped that FA class.
Dump as Celtics GM has been very good. Not good for dump. Good. No qualifiers. Any criticism he gets is because of his rocky start as a sim GM, his proclivity for emotional reactions and mood swings, and his reputation on TMB. There isn't much to say about him as a Celtics GM except that he has done a good job from what I have seen. I would say he has probably been the 2nd most successful Eastern Conference GM after Tyler and that really might be a tossup. You can't argue with two finals appearances in 5 years. And he has Butch McRae. Good work, dump.
I'm completely over Dump's mood swings. I get being excited about your team or frustrated when something doesn't go right. But Dump has taken this to an all-time high. His constant posts about how he's a terrible GM or how he doesn't know what he's doing are only to get everyone to tell him he's wrong. Cocky dump was only moderately better. He's just really insecure, constantly pandering for reassurance.
dump has been outstanding so far in 4.0 with putting together some good teams with shrewd moves (until this season, where I think hes now bombed his team to the point of no repair) but his crowning achievement has been running off Bankz' bitch
I honestly really really enjoy Dump. He has his moments where he can be annoying but so does everyone. He has absolutely dominated the casino which I don't think a single person saw coming. He has made some pretty damn good trades and of course won a FA sweepstake but that is all it takes sometimes. I look forward to watching him grow more as a GM. Plus he works with dogs so how can you not love that?
Dump has been a very good GM in 4.0 so far albeit some FA luck. Still though, Dump has made some great moves so far in the league. Trading for Adams as well as drafting Cliff and WBF during creation. I'm willing to bet most gm's thought that the core of Adams/Lanier/WBF would have won a finals, but TMBSL software is fickle and unpredictable. Dump can be overly hard on himself at times which I'm not sure if it's just a look at me act or if he really feels that way. Then there is Hulk Dump. If your fortunate enough to be an onlooker to one of his Dr Pepper laced tirades they can be very fun to witness and egg on. However many times it leads to Dump becoming tiring and even worse sometimes crossing the line.
7) Ian has a lot of TMBSL knowledge, is he just trying to help people understand the software or he just being a condescending know it all?
Ian's knowledge can be very helpful to an extent, but I don't think those are his intentions. I think Ian is very condescending and lacks communication skills and that just magnifies his whole persona. If you can fight through his hyperbolic nature you can learn a lot from the former commish.
I appreciate Ian's help with understanding the software, he really does know a lot more about that than just about everyone else on the board. That being said, his nostalgia fueled shout-spamming drives me crazy. Also, he’s definitely proven that understanding the software does not necessarily translate to winning, so he should stop GMing for the other 28 teams in shout.
It is a little bit of both. He just really, really loves sim league and immerses himself in it. Another personality trait he has is a bit of narcissism and definitely a stubbornness and refusal to admit mistakes. Combined, it rubs a lot of people the wrong way sometimes. That said, he is a good guy to have in the league and he is definitely willing to help and give his input and opinions on people (even when it is not asked for). When someone goes to ian for a software question or help, they love to hear what he has to say. That said, they are going to hear what he thinks they should be doing with their Depth Chart, their team, if they made the right moves, etc whether they ask him for his opinion or not. And that is what annoys people.
Both. Ian really does know a fuck load of stuff and he probably studied the software more than anyone else. The flip side of that though is he doesn't let people learn for themselves or even make their own mistakes. I mean Ian is basically the non funny Bill Simmons of TMBSL just commenting on everything and anything in shout. If you do want to learn some shit or just bounce some ideas Ian is a great person to PM. The only thing that I don't like is the living in the past but who can blame the poor Longhorn fan?

A bit of both. He has a lot of helpful information but he's mostly a douche about it. For the most part, I'm glad he's back.

I'm behind 7 proxies, so good luck finding out who sent this. Honestly, I think he is an average GM and a nice guy. Your team right now has definitely been built into a contender and that is a good job you have done there. I think you have a classic case of overvaluing any of your own assets (own picks, own players, etc) that is prevalent throughout sim league. This leads to a risk-averse GMing style where you only make moves when you feel you are clearly winning the deal. This isn't necessarily a bad thing and it generally keeps you from hitting rock bottom where you make a move that backfires on you big time and you are fucked for a few seasons. So it can often result in someone coming up with overall pretty successful teams but never reaching the top. Other times, you will run into the opportunities where those no brainer deals present themselves enough that you do built a championship team.
I myself think I used to suffer from the problem of overrating my own assets and becoming to attached to my own players. It makes trading much more difficult. I have become a lot more flexible and willing to move guys lately and I feel that it has benefited me as a GM. Now if there is a move to be made that I would like to get done, I approach it with "how can I get this move done" rather than "am I giving up too much? Am I winning this deal?". Sometimes, it will make people question your moves and sometimes you may even lose a trade, but it allows me to get shit done and get my team where I want it to be.
Canes cares too much what people think about him. Canes thinks very highly of his teams and almost always overprices his players. On the flip side, Canes is often slow to pull the trigger on any trade that doesn't consist of him gaining a huge advantage. A lot of GM's give him shit based on his time as a DM, but honestly I never read profiles so I really don't give a shit.
Solid GM but he needs to take more risks. Of course, I'm just a fan of mortgaging the future for mediocre success now.
Already touched on his terrible trade offers earlier, so I’ll leave one final complaint here. Stop telling us you are looking for a star player or solid big man. We know. We all saw your trade block, there's no need for you to remind us in every other thread or shout convo. Also, I think you’re a good GM but your jokes are cringe-worthy.

I don't have one answer for this because everyone has their own positives and negatives. I used to hate bankz as a GM, but recently when he has been around he seems to be much better and I don't hate him at all. I hope he gets a team. I really have no complaints. The league is more active than I've ever seen it. We have a great set of GMs and a pretty decent commish. The days of apathy are in the past, and probably the future but I thought it would have calmed down by now so maybe it won't be anytime soon.
Hey you gm's with cap space in off season: Quit offering stupid fucking contracts in off season and overpaying for average players just to add 3 wins to your season total. Maxing out role players isn't a good move and is only going to handcuff your franchise moving forward.
