Will do a full season full post too.

I assume those numbers are good for me? The bottom chart is the ranking by position, with 1 being the best at the position and 29 being the worst at each position.

Vonleh and Kanter are a great defensive duo Is this sarcasm or did you read the chart wrong? I thought that could be very easily taken as sarcasm since they are worst duo in the league

The bottom chart is the ranking by position, with 1 being the best at the position and 29 being the worst at each position. Thanks, what do the top numbers mean? Eric could explain better, but it's something like the combined tenths of a score away from the average or something like that, with positives being good and negatives bad.

The bottom chart is the ranking by position, with 1 being the best at the position and 29 being the worst at each position. Thanks, what do the top numbers mean? So every distribution can be defined with a standard deviation. If the standard deviation is really big, it means the values are really spread out. If the standard deviation is zero, it means literally every value is exactly the same. This ranking system uses two properties to measure defense: points allowed per true shot attempt, free throw attempts allowed per field goal attempt. Because these values have different standard deviations, being .1 above average in one means a very different thing than being .1 above average in the other, so I express each difference from average in terms of that average's standard deviation or "z score".

no I mean to be fair I recognize that it isn't immediately obvious, I just figured that the detailed explanation I posted in the first year's worth of this data covered it. I didn't consider people only starting on the later years, so from now on I'll c/p the explanation at the beginning.

As pioneered by 20s Navidad, I took every team's box scores and tallied them up by opponent by position. I then calculated points per true shot attempt and free throw attempts per possession, then I calculated averages and standard deviations for each stat-position combo, and finally I summed the distance from the average in terms of standard deviations for each opponent-position combo (z score). Positive numbers mean good, negative mean bad. Here are the results, first in combined tenths of z score, second as overall rank. C PF SF SG PG team 16 2 -11 9 12 76ers 13 -2 20 8 6 Bobcats 38 10 19 4 11 Bucks -31 13 9 6 18 Bullets -19 -23 -10 -25 -36 Bulls -23 -1 -2 -27 -24 Cavaliers 8 -3 0 18 -31 Celtics 5 9 -16 -2 14 Clippers 1 11 -13 -13 -31 Grizzlies -26 -43 -24 -17 13 Hawks 6 9 18 19 19 Heat -1 13 -2 12 -1 Hornets 31 33 19 11 23 Jazz 8 6 -12 -3 14 Kings 6 9 17 1 10 Knicks 1 -12 2 -11 15 Lakers 7 6 -2 28 -8 Magic -5 15 27 15 -7 Nets 16 24 5 18 12 Nuggets -14 -27 -20 -16 -15 Pacers 10 11 -10 14 2 Raptors 13 17 28 16 15 Rockets 1 -1 7 8 10 Spurs -17 -41 -24 -24 -13 Suns -11 -23 9 -14 -26 SuperSonics -11 -1 -6 -12 4 Thunder 17 0 -2 2 1 Timberwolves -8 8 0 -14 -7 Trailblazers -32 -21 -21 -10 -10 Warriors C PF SF SG PG team 4 16 22 10 9 76ers 6 21 3 12 14 Bobcats 1 9 4 14 11 Bucks 28 5 8 13 3 Bullets 25 25 20 28 29 Bulls 26 18 15 29 25 Cavaliers 9 22 13 3 27 Celtics 14 10 25 17 6 Clippers 16 8 24 22 28 Grizzlies 27 29 28 26 8 Hawks 13 11 6 2 2 Heat 18 6 16 8 18 Hornets 2 1 5 9 1 Jazz 10 14 23 18 7 Kings 12 12 7 16 12 Knicks 15 23 12 20 4 Lakers 11 15 17 1 21 Magic 19 4 2 6 19 Nets 5 2 11 4 10 Nuggets 23 27 26 25 24 Pacers 8 7 21 7 16 Raptors 7 3 1 5 5 Rockets 17 20 10 11 13 Spurs 24 28 29 27 23 Suns 22 26 9 23 26 SuperSonics 21 19 19 21 15 Thunder 3 17 18 15 17 Timberwolves 20 13 14 24 20 Trailblazers 29 24 27 19 22 Warriors All Defensive First Team C_ Brook Lopez - Bucks PF Jusuf Nurkic - Jazz* SF Benji Wilson - Rockets SG Sexy Rexy Walters - Magic PG Kenny Anderson - Jazz
All Defensive Second Team C_ Joenas Valanciunsmith - Jazz* PF Mystic Stone - Nuggets SF Matthew Lockhart - Nets SG Hawkeye Whitney - Heat PG Anfernee Hardaway - Heat The Jazz bigs DC was kind of all over the place this year so I'm guesstimating, but Jusuf was involved the whole year so I'm confident he's a 1st teamer. Is this finally the year for the Jazz to reach the Conference Finals? Only two Pacific cream puffs stand in their way, Dante Exum brings some much needed championship experience, let's see what happens. Matthew Lockhart storms back after a year's absence. First player to three All-Defensive teams. Mystic Stone is probably gonna catch him but still, guy is a beast. How do you like those apples, Jeff Murray?
