Welcome to the hangover from last season's rookie bender. No one in this class looks to be in the same stratosphere as last year's top 5, which should make for an interesting season. I expect a lot more movement, especially at the top.
1. LaSalle Thompson C 21 6'10'' 250 B C- D B+ A- B
Probably a slight surprise to see LaSalle at the top of the ladder going into sim 1, but I really liked what he did in preseason. His offensive game needs some work, but he rebounded and blocked shots at a great level and did so with a fair amount of minutes.
2. James Worthy SG 21 6'9'' 230 B+ B- C A- C+ A
I docked Big Game James some points because his preseason numbers came at a position that he is not eligible to play. His jumper is going to need some work, but once that gets going he should be a very productive player.
3. Dominique Wilkins SF 23 6'7'' 205 A- C+ C A- B- A
Nique had the best PPG out of any rookie in preseason, but obviously has a lot of work to do as well. His jumper looks every bit as undeveloped as Worthy's, but he's got a turnover concern on top of that. Will be interesting how he plays this season in what is now a crowded wing rotation in Golden State.
4. Terry Cummings PF 21 6'9'' 220 B+ C- D+ B B+ B
Cummings played well enough to earn a ROTM honor during preseason, and certainly shot the ball well, putting up a good FG% and FT% for a rookie big. However, his rebounding was not where I'd expect it to be w/ a B+ grade, and he's definitely not a shot-blocker. Hopefully he can get some help down the road and turn into a Sabonis-type, where he averages almost two steals and two blocks a game, but that's a long way off.
5. Clark Kellogg SF 22 6'7'' 230 B C+ D B B+ B
The JHB hype machine is in full swing, but there is good reason to be excited about this young rookie. He scored well in back-up minutes, shot a great FT%, and really squeezed the orange, taking care of the ball well despite a D handles grade.
6. Fat Lever PG 22 6'3'' 190 B B B B- C A
Fat over Mikan was one of the headlines of the draft, and so far Ank must be pretty happy with the results. Fat shot the ball pretty well and while he's doesn't look like a volume scorer, his offensive numbers will likely climb a lot once he gets starter's minutes. I expect Fat to challenge for the top spot by the end of the season.
7. Sleepy Floyd PG 22 6'3'' 170 C+ B+ B+ B C- B
Sleepy fell a bit further than most expected in the draft, but looks like he's going to be a good one. If he ended up in a spot with more opportunity off the bat, he'd be a good ROTY candidate. Instead, he'll probably be this year's Sidney Deane. A nice PG prospect stuck behind a more established player.
8. George Mikan C 22 6'10'' 250 B C- D+ B+ B+ A
Those Mikan drills paid off for big George in his limited opportunities this preseason. Hopefully he gets more opportunity in the regular season.
9. Markieff Eaton C 24 7'4'' 275 C- D D+ A- B+ B
We know who Markieff Eaton is going to be, but I was a little disappointed in these preseason numbers. He didn't swat as many shots as expected, and suffered some turnover issues to boot. However, his rebounding numbers look really good, and I think his end of year numbers will more closely resemble a good D/R big prospect.
10. Ricky Pierce SG 22 6'4'' 205 B- B+ C C+ C B
Hard to determine who should've gotten the last spot, as there are a number of promising rookies that didn't get many minutes as well as some who I expect to be better. Ricky gets the nod, because he didn't suck much.
Ones to watch: Quintin Dailey, Paul Pressey, Terry Teagle
