Better late than never...
Welcome to the 3rd annual edition of the Team Efficiency Rating. For those living under a rock or working as much as I have been lately, here is a short explanation for those not familiar with the NBA's Efficiency Ratings.
The NBA's Efficiency Rating is a very simple way to judge how efficient a player is when they're on the floor. These are different from Hollinger's Player Efficiency Ratings (PER).
Look at this example (from NBA.com) of 2 players from the same game.
Player A 43 MIN 5-22 FGM-A 7-9 FTM-A 8 REB 6 AST 3 STL 0 BL 4 TO 17 PTS
Player B 29 MIN 5-8 FGM-A 3-4 FTM-A 4 REB 7 AST 0 STL 0 BL 2 TO 15 PTS
Who had the better game? Well player A had more points, more assists, double the rebounds and made 4 more FTs on 5 more attempts. His efficiency rating is +11 but player B's rating was +20. Why? He shot 5/8 from the floor while player A shot a poor 5/22, he also only had 2 TO's while player A had 4.
So a player could have more points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks than another player but not be as efficient.
The formula the NBA uses is very simple:
Points + Rebounds + Assists + Steals + Blocks - Turnovers - Field Goals Missed - Free Throws Missed

Quick Analysis: Mavs are good at scoring efficiently, Celtics are better at scoring efficiently, Clippers would be the best at scoring efficiently if the Jazz hadn't just set record at scoring efficiently. Meanwhile the Grizz and Magic are the only 2 tankers to stay sub 90.

Quick Analysis: The Mavs were .1 away from tying the record for best oEF in a regular season. This category was very tight though, the Sonics, Thunder, Nets, Jazz and Bulls all finished under 120. The 76ers did the best at letting the other team score, but not quite enough to set the record held by LAL.

Quick Analysis: Jazz be breaking records and shit by being the first team to end a season with a +/- above 40. The Mavs, Clippers and Celtics were the only other to top +30, then the cliff drops off to the Bulls at +23.5. The Grizzlies were a stunning -60.1 on the tanking end but that was still 12.5 points higher than the record set last year by LAL. I think that record may stay there for a while.

P.S.
Sorry it was so late boys, my work schedule has just absurd lately and I'm not getting home most nights until almost 7 ( I go in at 8). Then by the time I do some shit around the house, assuming I go home after work, I say fuck it when I'm done and chill out for the evening. We're hiring a new guy on 7/7 so I should gradually start getting home early and even gain some down time at work. Then I can get back to being involved and hopefully this article will continue to be enjoyable for everyone. And who knows I may get even get a 2nd one in sometime! Haha
