Midwest Off-Season Report
Roster:
Team Needs: PF, PF/C, PG, SG, SF
Cap: $39,126,182
Draft Picks: 2.28
Bird Rights: Kobe Bogues, Lucius Allen, Sidney Wicks
Overview: The Dallas Mavericks celebrated Christmas early this year when coveted SF Larry Kenon forwent free agency and resigned with the Western Conference runner ups. Kenon rejoins PF Elvin Hayes and PG David Thompson as one of the most feared trios in all of TMBSL. With just over 10 mil in cap space, don't expect the Mavericks to make a big splash this off season, instead choosing to fill out the roster for what hopes to be another deep run in the playoffs.
Roster:
Team Needs: C, PG
Cap: $18,818,676
Draft Picks: 1.8, 1.26(from Hornets), 2.8
Bird Rights: None
Overview: The Denver Nuggets had arguably the best draft last season when the selected F Glenn Robinson with the #7 pick of the 3002 draft. Big Dog didn't disappoint taking home ROTY and First Team ALL TMBSL honors, all while finishing the league second in scoring. Now that GM Jerry West has found his superstar, he must place the pieces around him to become a true contender. With pick #8 and 31 mil in cap, West has all the tools needed to do so this off season.
Roster:
Team Needs: SG, PG, G, F
Cap: $40,813,654
Draft Picks: 2.17
Bird Rights: Lionel Hollins, Doug Collins
Overview: GM Dilworth took a huge gamble last season by trading Bob McAdoo and Billy Knight who were both locked up long term for a more talented duo of Marvin Webster and Lionel Hollins. One of the bullets were dodged when Webster decided not to test the open waters and re-upped with the team. Houston hopes that Hollins will follow suit in free agency. If Lionel bolts, PG Doug Collins will become a much higher priority for the team.
Roster:
Team Needs: Everything
Cap: $4,510,068
Draft Picks: 1.1, 1.24(from Celtics), 2.1
Bird Rights: None
Overview: The cupboard is bare in Memphis. The Grizzlies finished last season with the worst record in the league and were rewarded with the number 1 pick in the 3003 draft. With this being considered a weak class, GM Bruce Dickerson has put the #1 pick on the block looking to trade back and pick up some future assets. Memphis enters this off season with about 45 mil dollar in cap space, but I don't expect the team to be too active.
Roster:
Team Needs: PF, SF, SG, Bench
Cap: $18,871,370
Draft Picks: 2.23
Bird Rights: Don Adams
Overview: The Minnesota Timberwolves appear to be positioning themselves for a very strong 3004 draft class. However with the current roster position, GM Ian Boyd may find that his team may be too talented to tank for a bottom 5 draft pick. The Timberwolves seem married to All star Swen Nater, but young players Mark Eaton and Charlie Ward could be on the move this season.
Rosters:
Team Needs: PF, PF, SG, PG
Cap: $48,100,000
Draft Picks: None
Bird Rights: Slick Watts, Bobby Jones, Quinn Buckner
Overview: This is an off season crossroads for GM James Harden and the Oklahoma City Thunder. With no draft picks for the foreseeable future, and around 2 mil in cap space, the Thunder are limited to resigning their players with bird years and using the MLE/LLE. If the Thunder can resign Watts and Jones they will continue to be a playoff team for seasons to come.
Rosters:
Team Needs: SF, SF, G
Cap: $37,744,531
Draft Picks: None
Bird Rights: George Gervin, Steve Green, Nate Archibald
Overview: The defending champion Utah Jazz had two primary goals heading into this off season, and that was to resign George Gervin and Rick Barry. Rick Barry decided to finish his career in Utah and offered a very team friendly deal. The sole focus has now flipped to SF Gervin in attempt to lock of the biggest piece of the Jazz's three consecutive finals appearances. The Jazz also have bird rights on Steve Green and Nate Archibald.
