Today we are looking back at the Free Agency period of the 3038 season, the 3rd year of the Dump Dynasty. It was still the worst of times. We’re going to take a look at the class in groups based on the follow contract types: MAX (anything over 12m annually), Mid-Range (above 4.5m annually up to 12m annually), MLE, and LLEs. We’ll look at the notable deals, good and bad, from each type.
MAX:
Bullets Sign SG Jesus Shuttlesworth for $137,812,500 over 7 years.
Surefire Hall of Famer re-ups with his lifelong team on a well-earned max deal. Still has 3 years left and still looks sharp, despite 14 years in the league. He’s made the All-League team (2nd or 3rd) in each of the last 4 years and even turned in his 2nd highest FG% and highest 3P% of his career last year. Still a huge plus, no brainer contract and still looks good.
Nets Sign SG Sam Jones for $120,312,500 over 7 years.
How does a team sign the best defensive guard in the league, trade him away for only picks, yet still win a title within 4 years? Not really sure… but if you have the answer, PM me. Sam was worth the money and is my favorite MAX deal of this cycle. The most-elite of elite defenders on the perimeter and a volume scorer once he reached MSG. GM eric has a stud wrapped up for 3 more years and it still looks great.
Trailblazers Sign SF Elgin Baylor for $120,312,500 over 7 years.
Elite scorer, very good defender, and a bit fragile. Another no-brainer re-sign for GM majic. 3 All-Star appearances, yet a surprising omission from any All-League teams… probably due to injury luck. Next year is your year, majic… maybe? Worth the money… maybe not worth the stress. Hasn’t played in 80 games in 5 of the last 6 seasons.
Nuggets Sign SF Bucky Bockhorn for $120,312,500 over 7 years.
LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL. Bucky killed GM Bankz. We had to kill Bucky to get another GM. Just a horrible signing. He now makes the minimum for the Rockets as an average-backup. That’s what he is, an average backup. So much dumb in this signing.
Cavaliers Sign PG Matthew Jacobson for $14,000,000 over one year.
Signed to help the GM SugarShaun tank… and man he did a good job. Averaged 4.6 TOs/g and shot a putrid 36% from 3. He “earned” his “paycheck.”
Spurs Sign C Elton Brand for $65,000,000 over 5 years.
Defensive powerhouse at C, despite his 6’8” frame. Reasonable contract and fantastic rebounding and shot-blocking numbers. Shoots decent % from the charity stripe and really doesn’t hurt you offensively. The Spurs have been consistently good with Elton manning the block, just not quite good enough. Now that the THExodUS has occurred, Brand might be on the move. He’s too good to be on a tanker. Returning GM bruns has stated that a deal is in place for Brand, but it has yet to materialize. Whoever gets him gets a top-notch post-man.
Mid-Range:
Spurs Sign PG Rowdy Eavenson for $6,000,000 over one year.
Roddy Rowdy Eavenson nurtured young Reggie Theus and taught him the ways of the league. Not a great season, but he played his role for the Spurs as they advanced to the 2nd Round of the playoffs before falling to a Prince/Sergey-led Lakers squad.
Bullets Sign C Ervin Johnson for $4,600,000 over one year.
The 4th man in a 4-man big rotation for the 2nd best team in the East. Great rebounding and shot-blocking numbers… really pitiful on offense. Part of the revolving door in Washington to find go-to big men to support their all-time backcourt.
SuperSonics Sign PG Jeff Hornacek for $5,000,000 over one year.
Big mistake by a green GM. Delap was trying to tank and Horny was too good for that. Delap probably added 3-4 wins by playing him until he was traded to the Nets. Correct price for him, but just a bad fit.
Bucks Sign C Kosta Koufos for $51,500,000 over 5 years.
Good deal for a great big man. He rebounds incredibly well, blocks shots well, and his %s don’t make you barf. Maybe tries to shoot a little too much, but that is picking nits. Was traded after a single season to the Cavs, where he was an integral part of their assault on the Dump Dynasty (a failed assault.) Probably the best mid-range deal here (long-term)
SuperSonics Sign PG Guy Rodgers for $10,800,000 over 3 years.
Another bad deal for Delap… not that Guy isn’t a good player… but he chose Guy over Delaney Rudd, who has blossomed into a Top 10 PG in the league.
Grizzlies Sign C Gheorghe Muresan for $16,500,000 over 3 years.
Great rebounder, decent shot blocker… though that has fallen off considerably. Bad %s… but he doesn’t shoot a ton. So-so deal for a life-long (at that point) Vancouverean… Vancouverer… Vancouverite?
Bullets Sign SF Ryan Robertson for $7,500,000 over one year.
One of the better 6th men for the 3038 season. Love this deal. Definitely the best one-year deal in this group. Good defender who isn’t bad at scoring either.
Thunder Sign C Paul Young-Thomas for $8,000,000 over one year.
Good deal to tank. PYT was not a pretty young thing… he was awful. Just awful. I guess it worked out, though.
Bullets Sign PF Popeye Jones for $5,000,000 over one year.
RE: See Ervin Johnson. Very similar.
MLE:
Knicks Sign PG Darrick Martin for $4,500,000 over one year.
Great per minute numbers backing up not-Hall of Famer Carl Nicks. Led to lots of robot-talk about the greatness of Darrick for future years. Good signing.
Lakers Sign PG Russell Westbrook for $4,500,000 over one year.
Good backup to the Purple One for a 62-win club. Can’t complain with the signing, outside of his low assist and 3P% numbers. Decent.
Bobcats Sign C Jim Palmer for $4,500,000 over one year.
Blocked a lot of shots and shot horribly from the field. Meh.
Spurs Sign C Samuel Dalembert for $4,500,000 over one year.
Appeared in 1 single game. One. Uno. Solamente una giocha. Was paid $4.5M to get 1 rebound. That’s $4.5M per rebound for the season. Bad signing.
Thunder Sign PF Raymond Richardson for $4,500,000 over one year.
He’s bad too, but the Thunder were trying to be bad…. So it was a good signing?
LLE:
Raptors Sign PG Terrell Brandon for $1,200,000 over one year.
Consummate professional, even at an advanced age. Solid backup for Sleepy whenever he felt… sleepy. Good deal.
Lakers Sign C Bismack Biyombo for $1,200,000 over one year.
Another good –LE deal for the Lake Show. Put up really solid numbers in limited action. Good deals like this are what lead to 60 win seasons. That and guys named Sergey.
Spurs Sign C Serge Ibaka for $1,200,000 over one year.
Only appeared in 16 games. Spurs really oversigned at the big man spots in 3038. Could’ve used more help on the wing.
Suns Sign PG Nick Van Exel for $1,200,000 over one year.
Nick the Quick is my favorite LLE of the year, coming in strong with high %s as Fat Lever’s backup man. Didn’t miss any games and filled up the stat-sheet.
