The Good
Gates may never live up to the lofty comparisons to Isiah Thomas he received as a high school freshman, but his career at Marquette showed that there's still plenty to love about this native Chicagoan. He's a crafty finisher on the inside, able to work his way in for easy attempts at the rim through the forest of tall trees in the paint. His shooting stroke is a thing of beauty, and while he still struggles to find consistency from deep, scouts believe it shouldn't take him long to adjust.
The Bad
Gates has struggled mightily to stay on the court throughout his career, and many have questioned whether he can regain his athleticism given the amount of work done on his knees. Former coaches have complained that he lacks the mentality to be a true alpha dog scorer, and he has a tendency to disappear for large stretches during games. He has also developed a reputation for shrinking during The Moment tm.
