2016 Roundtable in Review

Best and worst GM of 2016?
Best -
1. Heebs - One of the only GMs to consistently be a good enough playoff team for the majority of 2016.
2. Fason - The best tear down and build GMs in the league. What he does to his teams is magic.
3. Ankly - One of the best weasel GMs in the business and one of the only GMs to be consistently in contention out west.
Worst -
1. RW/Devine - Self explanatory
2. Canesfan - Never did what needed to be done to be successful
3. Dumptime/GBG - titles aside, they have both been pretty mediocre without their once in a lifetime teams
Best GM - Dump - He lucked into a bit with getting Bird and JJ. I also don't feel that he made the best out of moves or trades that he has done but he has the most championships in the year with 5. The 2 teams closest to him are the Nets and 76ers with 2.
Worst GM - SPL - took on terrible contracts and did not get good value on the tear down and long rebuild. Even now with a competitive team refuses or 2nd guesses moves that should be done too much.
Best
- I think Heebs has done the best assembling talent and being a consistent thorn in the side of the Dumpire. Fason seems capable of tearing down literally anything and coming just as strong if not better. The Dump gets bonus points for not randomly destroying his dynasty mid run. It's 2017, it's time for participation awards.
Worst
- Was RW in 2016? How about we go with RW? Can we just rename it the RW award? There were a couple of GMs who never did much. I think Canes just fell into a malaise more than anything. I'm just happy the year is going to end soon enough that me moving Davis, Walker and Marvin won't qualify. Sheesh.
Best: Heebs was the only GM to win titles with a couple different cores (without the aid of the software) and was consistently up there among the best teams in the league.
Worst: JHB was horrible with the Magic, shitty in shout and incredibly annoying with post padding. But the worst thing he did was advise Devine to tank for the Bullets when the Bullets won the Jesus Shuttlesworth lottery.
Lots of contenders for best GM. Fason won with two different teams and laid the groundwork for another long run. KN was on a huge hot streak throughout most of 2016, and it's surprising that the Bullets only won one with this core. 20s made it to the Finals a ton of times, finally breaking through in his final season before becoming commish. But, as much as it pains me, I'll say dumptime. He won 5 titles in the calendar year with two different cores. While he cheesed his way to one and got some very lucky breaks for his dynasty, the Celtics owned this year as much as the Thunder owned 2015.
Worst GM of the year goes to my main man RV. While he left before the year ended, his resume was pretty stacked. Mediocre team performances, one of the most frustrating GMs to attempt trades with, and always a guarantee to check in on shout at the exact moment someone is complaining about him to get his panties in a bunch. The revelation that he is a habitual liar followed by his unceremonious departure from the league was one of the better sources of entertainment this year, but the mess he left in Charlotte took Fecta a long time to undo.
Best newcomer GM of 2016?
1. SugarShaun - He came in on August of 2015 but everyone knows it takes awhile to get used to this. He has brought a much needed ally to the Central Division alongside Handsome Pete to bring respect to the well known crap pile that is that division.
2. DelapThrows - My fellow Dallas Maverick fan. Oh what a brightspot you have been in this league. The Sonics have been the best that they have been since Yawn put together his one truly competitive team a long time ago. You have been nothing but a delight rather its in shout or in the casino. Thank you.
3. Taco Sa1ad - While true success has not been bestowed on this GM, he has brought stability and worthwhileness to the Golden State Warriors franchise in 4.0. He is known for his drafting and FA credentials.
4. Fecta23 - I'm not gonna lie, I was pretty skeptical that Fecta would hang around with us for this long. Even though his team is mediocre now and probably will be for the 4047 draft, He is a much better person and GM than the previous Hornets GM.
Delap - He has his team in the playoffs and is active.
Delap. Hands down. Seattle is like a winner now. Weird.
I give Delap the slight edge over Fecta because he brought in Lip and may be bringing in another friend. He and Fecta gave a much needed shot in the arm to activity when they joined last summer.
Delap has been a great addition and, of the newcomers, he's brought the most to the league. He's a frequent presence in shout, seems to be getting the hang of GMing, and has made some great article contributions already. A certain Toronto GM attempted to get Delap to join the league way back in 2014, but better late than never I guess. Also, shout out to Ward2Dunn, who is not a new GM by any means but who came back to the league after a prolonged absence and has been a valuable addition. The West needed some competence.
Biggest Surprise of 2016?
- Dump landing Bird and then landing Jimmy in 4.0 leading to one of the worst times in TMBSL history. Not even close. All thanks to Odin raping him for taking on some shitty, old, overpriced PG for 3 1sts.
other moments are the #OhWow movement when good ole Victor won his 1st title. or when Heebs won his first title with Slick Leonard as his PG.
Soup stepping down - for me it came a little out of left field, I understand that he put a lot of work into this (Big thank you to 20s for stepping in) and it can be time consuming but I always got the impression that he liked it. I am hoping that he comes back soon as a GM, his presence is missed.
I would say that the Dump Dynasty (producers of Dump Commander) is the easiest one, but it kind of falls in line with everything else that happened in 2016. I think the biggest surprise for 2016 is that we finished the year replacing a commish and the league is still active.
My biggest surprise is that 4.0 is still going I would have never imagined it would last this long and thought it was going to die within a few seasons of Soup stepping down.
Victor's #ohwow title run was one of the most surprising things to happen since I've been in the league. They were a solid team but I don't see anything on that roster that would suggest it's title worthy. Things broke favorably during the playoffs out West and they made the most of it, pulling off a huge upset in the Finals against one of the first great Kyrie/Jesus Bullets teams. The Spurs then fell out of the playoffs for the next six seasons before re-emerging behind Reggie Theus.
Luckiest GM of 2016? Unluckiest?
Luckiest - Dumptime. Not even close. No contest.
Unluckiest - Handsome Pete. He had one of the best teams in the league but ultimately coincided with a dynasty.
Luckiest - Dump - For the main reason he was able to get the 1st pick in the draft and get Bird and nab JJ in FA. I don't think I would have been able to screw that up.
unluckiest - Majic - He has put together one of the best 1-2 punches in Arenas and Baylor and just finally got his first championship with this tandem.
Dumptween. Unluckiest? Heebs for having to deal with the Dumphora World Order. Then I guess Majic. His teams, like his throws, fell short.
Besides Dump, the luckiest GM was Majic. He was incredibly fortunate to jump up in the lotto two years in a row to get Baylor and Arenas.
2016 was pretty rough on GBG, he drafted Rose and Wiggins during the crapdraft era. Then just as it looks as though he turned things around with Lillard and Curry, he loses them.
Dump is the runaway winner for luckiest GM. 2nd place is not even close. We've seen people strike big in the lottery and FA in the same offseason before, but I don't think we've seen a better draft/FA combo than Larry Bird and Jimmy Jackson. The closest I can remember was MJ landing Greg Monroe and Magic Johnson in the same offseason.
I'll take Bankz as the unluckiest for never even breaking into the Finals with his Terrell Brandon/Jimmy Butler/Mystic Stone teams. The West was a bit deeper during that run but that was still a very good roster that continually underachieved in the playoffs.
Best and Worst trade?
Best: Steve Francis for trash. Trade that ultimately led to the Dynasty. Without that trade, the Celtics would have just been a one and done playoff team like they have been forever.
Worst: Ankly trading Matthew Lockhart for Len Bias. Trofie trading away Jesse Epstein.
Best - lolwrongtmbsl.proboards.com/thread/9166/1409-bucks-blazers-kings-mle
3 way deal with the Bucks/Kings/Blazers that gave the Kings Kevin Brooks and he was able to send that Tarpley contract to Portland.
I'm terrible at remembering other people's trades. I've made a bunch of bad ones, but I don't know any are the worst...
Best trade was how bad Trofie raped Canes in that Jabari Parker trade. One those Bobcats picks lead to him getting Borat, I can't remember what he did with the other.
Bucks Send
Jabari Parker
Heat Send
Willie Lewis
Saleh Winabi
Deion Robertson
Bobcats 34
Bobcats 36
Worst was when Rv traded for Paul Arizin. This trade could look even worse had Odin not chosen KCP over Harold Miner.
Bobcats trade:
Paul Arizin
Hornets trade:
Kentavius Caldwell Pope
Roy Hibbert (MLE)
Shane Larkin
Steve Hamilton
Hornets 36 and 37 1sts
Best trade of the year was the Sam Jones megadeal that sent him from across the river from Jersey to NYC. One of the rare superstar-for-picks trades that works out well for both parties. The Knicks found their star wing and became a legit threat in the playoffs as opposed to a perennial one-and-done team, and the Nets gained a boatload of assets and the financial flexibility to improve the roster as a whole, bringing home a title two seasons later.
Worst trade is the Arizin deal. Completely baffling overpay for a star well past his prime on a contract that completely ruined any hope of building a contender out of the young players on that team. In addition to all the drama that followed, the strangest part of this to me was that I made RV a trade offer of 23 year old Otto Porter for two first and Miner a day or two beforehand and was told that the offer was so bad it didn't deserve a response.
Biggest Controversy?
or
Jerry Reynolds mysterious murder
For me it was the whole stuff with RV and him making the claim that people were sending him messages that he needed to quit the league.
Jessie Epstein. That was a giant crock of shit. A huge steaming pile of it. Thank god the software betrayed Eric. Fucking breaking Asimov's rules about robotics with your human overlords there buddies.
That whole thing with Jesse Epstein. However I think Eric made Jesse that good and kept arguing with people for 7 pages in that thread all as a troll.
Honorable Mention was RV being a pathological liar.
Jesse Epstein almost broke the league. His ridiculously overpowered attributes coupled with Eric's attempt to rig his eventual free agency to become a Knick pissed off just about everybody, and his persistence in arguing about it every time someone brought it up meant that it lasted way longer than most. What's funny is that it probably wouldn't have been so heated if Eric had been a little more dishonest about what he was doing.
Best Title Team? Best Title Team that wasn’t the Celtics?
- this past Nets title or the lone Bullets title for the non-Celtics title.
Celtics were obviously the best but best outside of them would be this past Blazers team.
I'm gonna say the Nets.
Nets in 41 were really good and dominated that playoffs.
Bucks in 36 were also very good and people thought they were going to be a dynasty until that Bird/Jackson offseason happened.
Best title team, Celtics or otherwise, goes to the 3034 Bullets. Kyrie and Jesus at the height of their powers, KG's last dominant season, the criminally underrated Jeff Murray, overqualified back-ups Brent Price and DeJuan Blair, and a shitload of D/R bigs to boot. This team was ridiculous.
Best team that didn’t win a title?
You can just pick out any of the many cRaptor ECF teams...(ed. note: TRIGGERED)
Either the Raptors team or the Jazz Teams with Ackles and Jonas.
Those Prime Raptor teams were really good.
That Raptors core of Webber/Randolph/Battier/Sleepy were together just at the wrong time.
I mentioned the Nuggets already but I'll reiterate again that they had a stellar lineup for a lot of years but never caught a break in the playoffs to go all the way. Most of the other deserving teams this year got one eventually.
Best Article?
Any Handsome Pete article, really. I liked what 20s did with the team history.
Worst articles are almost all eric related. What he did to the rookie ladder is actually classified as manslaughter in most states.
Best - State of the Pacific by Pete. Best article by far.
Hrmmm best article? The regular season championship belt article was pretty good.
I enjoyed the way the rookie big board made me just rage with every update. Quality troll work.
Movie posters the sequel.
Honorable Mentions to the States of the Atlantic, Central and Midwest.
Movie Posters Redux was a rare case of the sequel being superior to the original. The Free Agency retrospectives have been a great new edition that I hope continues. I'm also glad that podcasts are coming back after a long hiatus.

Bonus: Make a New Year’s Resolution for TMBSL in 2017
I promise that there will be no more Smug Dump. That will be my resolution. Smug Dump is dead and gone.
More podcasts, more power hours, more group shit to have fun.
Made one. Already broke it.
I vow to get you sons of bitches to realize it's time to move onto 5.0
I resolve to only write articles that receive the Taco seal of approval.
