I thought it would be fun to look at championship teams and see what the highest draft pick that they drafted was. I was able to do this for 3006-present because tmbsl.com doesn't have player pages before that. This is also probably a good place to draw a line because teams before that would be heavily influenced by the creation draft, but it doesn't really matter because the information isn't there regardless. The data is also corrupted for 3011 and 3031 so I was only able to find the highest pick for those teams. I didn't count draftees that had left the team and come back - this only happened five times anyway and never in an interesting way. I also counted a player as drafted if they played their first year with the team.
Okay!
So of these 38 champions,
38 had at least one player they drafted,
10 had their own 1.1,
11 had 1.2 or 1.3,
10 had 1.4-1.7,
5 had 1.17-1.21,
2 had 2.7-2.28
The overwhelming majority (31) had not only a lotto pick but a top half of the lotto pick.
There's an odd clump at 1.17-1.21. I have no idea why that is.
And then the 3014 Mavericks had 2.7 and the 3043 Knicks had 2.28.
On average, 40% (198 of 491) of a championship team was drafted.
The max was 73% of the 3025 Grizzlies with 8 firsts (including 4 lottos) and 3 seconds.
The min was 8% of the 3043 Knicks with 0 firsts and 1 second.
In the past 10 years we've had a lot of champions with 1.1: Blazers (Baylor), Nets (Wilkins), Celtics (Bird), and Bullets (Kyrie and Jesus).
But in the 28 years before that there were only three: Blazers (Curry), 76ers (Robinson), and Celtics (Drexler).
