20s Navidad and Heebs like this
Post by Face-in on Mar 10, 2017 19:27:58 GMT -6
Think this is one that is well overdue. Delap gave me a chance to ask him some questions. Enjoy.
Tell us a little bit about yourself.
Born and raised in Tallahassee, FL. Spent my whole life here except for my mission for church, which was in Milan, Italy. Currently working (part-time) on my PhD in Higher Education Policy… should be done by Fall 2020. Tomorrow (or today, depending when Fason posts this) is my 11th wedding anniversary, so that’s pretty good. Proud parent of two kids, 7 (boy) and 4 (girl) who are pretty rad. Any free time I do have I try to play basketball or golf, but let’s be real… I don’t really have free time. Bleeding heart liberal, pacifist, big fan of 60s/70s rock, late 90s hip-hop, and musical theatre, and constantly fighting a soda addiction that keeps me slightly overweight. I can’t grow a real beard, but dammit I try.
Do you remember what brought you to sim league?
I came from TMB, like many of us. I almost came in 2014… but was overwhelmed at the scope of the league at the time and got scared off. Finally took the leap last June and I am loving it. I’m not good at it yet… and may never be, but I enjoy the hell out of it. Eventually I might even figure out how to win playoff series consistently.
Congratulations on your championship in 3041. I believe this is your 2nd now. Which to you was more satififying? The first or the one that beat the Dump Dynasty?
Speaking of Dump, anything you would want to say to your friend? You always have kind words to share to each other.
Um… I hadn’t mentioned the Great One… but yeah, I like dump. We share a love for the Dallas Mavericks, for sure. He put it all on the line against Powe and dragged his nuts all over that dude’s face… which is A-OK in my book. I’d love to see him next time I’m in Dallas visiting my FIL. Maybe we can hit the court and see if he can do anything with defenders around.
Time for some lists, can you give me a list of your all time 5 best and worst GM's of sim league and a little reason why?
From my short experience:
(Best)
1. Heebs
2. Fason
3. Ward
4. kn
5. dump
(Worst)
1. Compu GM for the Heat
2. Canes
3. Gene Ralsherman
4. JHB
5. dump
We all have that one GM that we just hate to deal with and talk with, who is that GM for you and why?
So… not in the league anymore, but it was definitely Trofie. I think we got advanced in trade talks and then I backed out and it just pissed him off. I don’t think we had any other bad interactions, but after that it was impossible dealing with him.
Can you give me your all time starting 5 of sim league. Players do not need to be current.
From my time here (so excluding the guys I just heard about/read about):
PG – Kyrie Irving (Gil is a very close 1B)
SG – Jesus Shuttlesworth
SF – Larry Bird
PF – Lebron James
C – Shaquille O’Neal
All of these guys could easily be (and have been, except for Lebron) the best player on a championship team. Larry Bird in particular destroyed my Sonics teams of the late 30s… screw that guy.
What is the best sporting event you have attended?
I’ve been to very few non-FSU events in person… so I’m pretty sure that whatever it is, it is FSU-related. My favorite is probably the Chris Rix to PK Sam Hail Mary to beat UF in 2003. I was the lone ‘Nole in the UF student section and it was amazing.
Best non-FSU would be seeing Golden State during their 73-win season last year in Orlando. Steph dropped 51 with 10 3s… and my son is obsessed with Steph, so it was great to experience that with him.
Who is your favorite athlete and why?
I think it’s Dirk. He’s the best offensive PF to ever play the game (suck it Malone/Barkley) and has been so consistent in his game for so long. He works hard, he has fun, he’s good to the community. He’s been the best player on my favorite team for almost 20 years now… it’s hard not to love him.
Coming up behind him would be a list consisting of Dale Murphy, Anquan Boldin, Dalvin Cook, Rory Delap, and prime-era Tiger Woods.
If you could make one change to sim league, what would that change be and why?
I’d love to see scoring bigs matter and some diversity in style of play. It would be great if the software would allow teams to have different strategies (Triangle, 7 seconds or less, DDM, ISO, etc.) so we could mix it up a bit, see some more styles of lineup creation to match those strategies… anything to add a bit of diversity and allow GMs to try different tactics.
Oh, and #wheel.
Rank your top 5 drinks by choice.
1. Coca-Cola Classic
2. Mountain Dew Pitch Black
3. Dr. Pepper
4. Grapefruit Juice
5. Butterbeer from Harry Potter World
In my opinion, you are one of the best at evaluating players in sim league and finding hidden gems. Obviously, you do not want to give away too much but anything you would care to share about what you look for?
I’m pretty sure this question was copied/pasted from a different interview… I’m pretty bad at this actually. I have almost no track record of successful evaluation of previously unheralded players. I took a chance on Eddie Griffin and that has paid off nicely, but he was a talent before I got him. I obviously let Delaney Rudd go for peanuts and picked Guy Rodgers over him. Same goes for Lee Mayberry, who then helped the Celtics in their 4-peat as a backup PG.
In life we all have those teams and fanbases that we don't like or cannot stand. What fanbase is that for you and why?
Miami fans (Hurricane or Heat). These people are simply the worst. They either a) steal NBA championships via crooked refereeing (re: 2006) or b) hang on to the tattered memories of a football program that was once great… but quickly deteriorated without the benefits of overloading a roster in the 80s with additional scholarship players from the track team or of straight-up Nevin Shapiro-ing their way to players. They have been in the ACC… the A. C. C. for 11 seasons and haven’t even won their division (the crappier of the two divisions)… yet they still crow about #5rangz. Idiots. All of them.
Let's get some ND talk in here, Are we now a basketball school or what do you see in the future with Brian Kelly and the football team?
We have Valentines day approaching, if I gave you the powers of Cupid and you can hit love arrows, who would you match up with what gms?
Any final words or shout outs?
In the words of Abraham Lincoln, “Be excellent to each other. Party on, dudes!”
