This was a wildly unspectacular Rookie TC. Not many prospects grew spectacularly, outside of half a handful big jumps. Even the TC's that were big jumps tended to be in categories that were less than preferable. Without further ado:
Round 1
1. Magic
Danny Manning PF 6'10'' 240 23 B+ C+ C B- B- B
Danny Manning SF 6'10'' 240 23 B+ C+ C B- B- B (even)
Ouch. Manning looked the part of a surefire number top of the lotto pick in the Summit but an even TC and a poor preseason puts his future in jeopardy. This is not a good start to the rebuild for GM MJ.
2. Pistons
Mitch Richmond SG 6'5'' 215 23 B- B C C C+ A
Mitch Richmond SG 6'5'' 215 23 B- A- C C C+ A (+2)
Generally, high-volume scoring efficiency is a beautiful thing from a wing in this league. However, when it comes packaged with absolutely nothing on defense, people tend to write a player off. As far as Richmond goes, he may eventually be able to score enough to justify his lack of defense. We haven't seen wings like this since the halcyon days of guys like Pee Wee Kirkland. Maybe he will develop on defense, but maybe he becomes a unique scoring threat on the wing.
3. Trailblazers
Rik Smits C 7'4'' 250 22 B+ C D A- B B
Rik Smits C 7'4'' 250 22 B+ C D A- B- B (-1)
Yikes. Not a good look for a top three pick to go down in his first TC. On the bright side for Majic, Smits already had playable grades that can be fixed with RC and TCs and his preseason wasn't bad. On the bright side for everyone else, 20's may actually consider changing his name to Rik Shits now.
4. Suns
Anthony Mason PF 6'7'' 250 21 B C+ C C+ B A
Anthony Mason PF 6'7'' 250 21 B+ C+ C- B- B+ A (+2)
Mason bumped up one in inside scoring, defense, and rebounding with a drop by one in handling. I really wish he had been moved to small forward so he could have gotten a prime TC in on his outside scoring. However, still a solid prospect and a much better TC for Ankly than for the previous three draft picks.
5. Bobcats
Rex Chapman SG 6'4'' 185 21 C+ B C+ B- C- A
Rex Chapman PG 6'4'' 185 21 B- B+ C+ A- C- A (+5)
Easily the pick of the draft. Looks like Odin may have his PG of the future. The only real hole in his gradeset right now is his handling, which will grow faster than anything else at PG and it's clear Rex is a high-potential guy.
Great work Odin, I just wonder how long he will keep him before changing gears. Rex Chapman will be traded by Tuesday.
6. Bullets
Dan Majerle SG 6'6'' 215 23 B B B- C+ C+ B
Dan Majerle SG 6'6'' 215 23 B+ A- B- C+ C+ A (+3, +1 potential)
Thunder Dan looks to be perhaps even more prolific a scorer than Mitch Richmond and is right on the cusp of being PG eligible with his grades. I am interested to see how KN looks to develop his skills to try and get the most out of him.
7. Magic (from Cavaliers)
Nikola Jokic C 6'10'' 250 21 B+ C+ C+ C+ C+ A
Nikola Jokic C 6'10'' 255 21 B+ C+ C B C+ A (+1)
Well one of the two areas that needed the biggest upgrade for Jokic went up with him getting a +2 bump in defense. The big question was if this meant Jokic potentially had some hidden talent as a shot-blocker. While he did score very well for a big, he turned it over 3 times a game and didn't block shots in the preseason. Good thing the market for turnover-prone, low-block bigs is huge! Yet another example of MJ squandering what looked like a potentially franchise-changing offseason with 4 lottery picks.
8. Jazz
Charles Smith SF 6'10'' 230 23 B C+ C- B- B- B
Charles Smith SF 23 6'10'' 235 B+ C+ C- B- C+ B (even)
A bump in inside scoring comes with a drop in rebounding, which is potentially concerning since Smith is only able to play small forward due to his draft profile. Hopefully some points and another TC can bump his outside and start to move the needle on his defense and rebounding.
9. Spurs (from Clippers)
Brian Shaw SG 6'6'' 190 22 C+ B- B+ C+ C+ B
Brian Shaw SG 6'6'' 190 22 B- B B+ B- C+ B (+3)
Dammit Timpig. You ruined all of my draft plans. Shaw looks really good though, so congrats.
10. Hawks (from Pacers via Magic)
Chris Morris SF 6'8'' 210 22 B- C+ C+ B- B- A
Chris Morris SF 6'8'' 210 22 B B- C B- C+ A (even)
A +2 in scoring was countered by a less consequential -1 in rebounding and handling. I was hoping for better from Morris but hopefully he continues to grow into a scorer that can replace Martell Webster.
11. Hawks (from Mavericks via Magic)
Willie Anderson SG 6'7'' 190 21 B- C+ B- B+ C A
Willie Anderson SF 6'7'' 195 21 B B- B- A- C A (+3)
Unfortunately, this +3 isn't as impressive as it looks. +1 came from SC's and another +1 came from a move from SG to SF. However, Anderson still appears to be a potential lockdown defender on the perimeter.
12. Bulls
Rod Strickland SG 6'3'' 175 22 B- C+ C+ B C- A
Rod Strickland SG 6'3'' 175 22 B B C+ B C- B (+3, -1 potential)
Strickland's TC is a reflection of his career. He looks like he may be a pretty good scoring guard. We'll see how the rest fills in while he plays for GM lip who tends to be less aggressive with the upgrades.
13. Pacers (from Knicks)
Hersey Hawkins SG 6'3'' 190 22 B C+ C+ B- C+ B
Hersey Hawkins SG 6'3'' 190 22 B C+ B- B+ C+ B (+3)
A good +3 bump for Hawkins and the Pacers, but I'm sure they would have liked it to have been in scoring categories rather than handling and defense.
14. Pelicans (from Bucks)
Grant Long PF 6'8'' 225 20 B- C+ C- C+ B- A
Grant Long SF 6'8'' 225 20 B C+ C C+ B A (+3)
Not bad for your first time, Billy. Long looks to maybe have potential as a SF in this league.
15. Suns (from Braves)
Vernon Maxwell SG 6'4'' 193 23 B- C+ B- C+ C+ B
Vernon Maxwell SG 6'4'' 193 23 B- C+ C+ B- C+ A (even, +1 potential)
This is another Ankly player I wished he'd moved before TC. I liked Maxwell more as a PG than a SG. After -1 in handling and +1 in defense with no change in scoring, the shine has come off of Maxwell a little, even with his potential bump.
16. Pistons (from Warriors)
Tito Horford C 7'1'' 245 22 C- C- C+ B+ B B
Tito Horford C 7'1'' 245 22 C- C- B- B+ B B (+1)
Tito gets a +1 bump to handling, which doesn't really mean much. Hopefully he can break the streak of atrocious rookie bigs that Geebs has filled his roster with.
17. Raptors
Harvey Grant SF 6'8'' 195 23 B C C- C+ B B
Harvey Grant SF 6'8'' 195 23 B+ C C- B- B- B (+1)
I wasn't a huge fan of this pick, but Grant had a surprising TC. His outside game needs some work, but he may turn into something.
18. Rockets
Tim Perry PF 6'9'' 200 23 B D+ D+ A- B C
Tim Perry PF 6'9'' 205 23 B D+ D+ B+ B C (-1)
Yet another disappointing first round TC. Ward's future D/R big goes -1 in defense and rebounding.
19. Pistons (from Hornets)
Will Perdue C 7'0'' 240 23 C C- C- B+ B B
Will Perdue C 7'0'' 240 23 C C- D+ B+ B+ C (even, -1 potential)
Perdue gets a +1 in rebounding and a meaningless -1 in handling to finish even. As I said above, hopefully he and Tito Horford can break the tradition of low-blocking Piston rookie bigs.
20. Pelicans (from Lakers)
Derrick Chievous SF 6'7'' 195 21 B- B- C+ C+ B- B
Derrick Chievous SF 6'7'' 195 21 B- B C+ C+ C+ B (even)
Not such a great job, Billy. This looks more like the work of a rookie GM.
21. Bullets (from Grizzlies)
Gary Grant PG 6'3'' 185 23 B- B B B- C C
Gary Grant PG 6'3'' 185 23 B- B B B- C C (even)
I thought KN88 made a great move moving back into the draft to get this point guard and seriously considered him earlier in the first hoping that his C potential hid something more promising due to his starting grades. This is a little disappointing and sets the table for some disappointing PG TC's to end the first round.
22. Suns (from Pacers)
Kevin Edwards PG 6'3'' 190 23 B B- B B- C+ D
Kevin Edwards PG 6'3'' 190 23 B B- B B- C+ D (even)
I guess we didn't learn our lesson last season when Fred Dilworth was overdrafted. Surprisingly, the D potential player stayed the same rather than dropping grades.
23. Pelicans (from Kings)
Fennis Dembo SF 6'5'' 215 22 C+ B- C B- B- B
Fennis Dembo SF 6'5'' 215 22 C+ B C- B- B- A (even, +1 potential)
This is about what you expect at this point in the draft. C+ B scoring grades could turn into something and you don't worry about the drop in handling too much.
24. Pistons (from Celtics)
Vinny Del Negro SG 6'4'' 185 22 C+ B C+ C+ C- B
Vinny Del Negro PG 22 6'4'' 185 C+ B+ B C+ C- C (+3, -1 potential)
This is a good TC for a pick this late in the draft. C+ B+ grades make him a potentiall interesting scorer, the C- rebounding plays a little better at PG, and B handling may be good enough to not be a liability. He may have solid backup potential behind Phil Ford 2.0, who is starting to look really interesting for Geebs. Quality depth pick.
25. Bobcats (from Hawks via Magic)
Anthony Taylor PG 6'4'' 175 23 B- B B- B C- D
Anthony Taylor PG 6'4'' 175 23 B- B B- B C- C (+1 potential)
See pick #22.
26. Raptors (from Spurs)
Steve Kerr PG 6'3'' 190 23 B- B+ C+ C+ D+ C
Steve Kerr PG 6'3'' 190 23 B- B+ C+ B D+ C (+2)
Could be interesting. Scoring grades are there, probably won't pass much, the B defense may play.
27. Lakers (from SuperSonics via Cavaliers)
Rony Seikaly C 6'11'' 230 23 B- D+ D B- B- B
Rony Seikaly C 23 6'11'' 230 B- D+ D- B B- B (even)
This isn't your dad's DJ Rony.
28. Timberwolves
Andrew Lang C 6'11'' 245 22 B D+ D B+ C+ B
Andrew Lang C 6'11'' 245 22 B D+ D+ B+ C+ B (+1)
The +1 handling is meaningless. Hopefully that B+ defense includes some shot-blocking so Lang can be a useful player for Ayyoe.
29. Bullets (from Heat)
Tom Tolbert PF 6'7'' 235 23 B- B- D+ B- C+ C
Tom Tolbert SF 6'7'' 235 23 B B D+ B- C+ B (+2, +1 potential)
Right now this looks like a potential steal for KN to end the first round. Tolbert shows some good scoring grades, acceptable rebounding, and some hidden potential. Tolbert could end up developing into a starting option with another good TC and some points pumped into his scoring to make him elite.
Round 2
1. Suns
Jeff Grayer SG 6'5'' 200 23 B- C+ C C+ B- B
Jeff Grayer SG 6'5'' 200 23 B- C+ C B- C+ B (even)
Great work Ank. Way to identify another surefire second round sleeper.
2. Pacers (from Magic)
Shelton Jones PF 6'9'' 210 22 B- C C B- B- B
Shelton Jones SF 6'9'' 210 22 C+ C C+ B- B- B (even)
3. Bullets (from Bobcats)
Keith Smart PG 6'1' 175 24 B- B B- C+ D+ C
Keith Smart PG 24 6'1'' 175 B- B+ B- C D+ B (even, +1 potential)
4. Bullets
John Starks PG 6'3' 180 23 C B- B- B+ C- C
John Starks PG 23 6'3'' 180 C B- B B+ C- B (+1, +1 potential)
KN takes a couple shots on second round point guards here but I'm not sure either looks all that promising.
5. Braves (from Pistons)
Everette Stephens PG 6'2'' 175 22 B- B- B- B- D+ C
Everette Stephens PG 6'2'' 180 22 B- B- B B+ D+ C (+3)
Well this isn't bad, not bad at all. Solid backup PG potential.
6. Braves (from Trailblazers)
Mark Bryant C 6'9'' 245 23 B- C C B- B- B
Mark Bryant C 23 6'9'' 245 B- C C B- B- B (even)
7. Cavaliers
Nate Johnston SF 6'8'' 203 22 B- C C- C+ B B
Nate Johnston SF 6'8'' 203 22 B- C C- C+ B B (even)
8. Jazz
Charles Shackleford PF 6'10'' 225 22 B D+ D+ C+ B- B
Charles Shackleford C 6'10'' 225 22 B D+ D+ B- B- B (+1)
9. Clippers
Jerome Lane PF 6'6'' 230 22 B- C B- C+ B C
Jerome Lane PF 6'6'' 230 22 B- C C+ B- A- B (+2)
+3 in the all-important D/R grades and a -1 in handling which is insignificant. A potential value pick for the Clippers? We shall see.
10. Pelicans
Rolando Ferreira C 7'1'' 240 24 B- C D+ B C+ C
Rolando Ferreira C 24 7'1'' 240 C+ C D B- C+ C (-3)
Woof.
11. Hawks (from Mavericks)
Michael Williams PG 6'2'' 175 22 C+ C+ B- B- D+ A
Michael Williams PG 6'2'' 175 22 C+ C+ B+ B D+ B (+3, -1 potential)
An interesting +3 for a second round pick, but no one has been interested in a point guard that can't score since early 2.0.
12. Bulls
Troy Wyss SF 6'8'' 238 22 C+ B C- C+ C- A
Troy Wyss SF 6'8'' 238 22 C+ B+ C- C+ C- B (+1, -1 potential)
13. Cavaliers (from Knicks)
Orlando Graham PF 6'8'' 220 23 B+ D+ D+ C+ B C
Orlando Graham PF 6'8'' 220 23 B+ D+ D+ C+ B+ B (+1, +1 potential)
14. Bucks
Michael Anderson PG 5'11'' 184 23 B- C+ B B- C C
Michael Anderson PG 5'11'' 184 23 C+ C+ B- B- C C (-2)
15. Braves
Lucas Templeton SF 6'8'' 251 18 C+ C+ C C+ C- C
Lucas Templeton SF 6'9'' 251 18 C+ C+ C C C- C (-1)
16. Warriors
Ricky Berry SG 6'8'' 205 24 C+ B+ C- C C+ B
Ricky Berry SG 6'8'' 210 24 C+ B+ C- C+ C+ B (+1)
I was hoping Berry would be a hidden gem with his C+ B+ scoring grades but unsurprisingly a 24 year old with B potential didn't make a huge jump.
17. Pacers (from Raptors)
David Rivers PG 6'0'' 170 23 C B B- B- C- B
David Rivers PG 23 6'0'' 170 C B B+ B- C- B (+2)
18. Hornets
Dean Garrett C 6'10'' 225 22 B C- D B C+ B
Dean Garrett C 6'10'' 225 22 B C D B+ C+ C (+2, -1 potential)
19. Rockets
Winston Bennett SF 6'7'' 210 23 B- C+ C+ C+ C+ B
Winston Bennett SF 23 6'7'' 210 B- C+ B- C+ C+ C (+1, -1 potential)
Not a banner TC for the Rockets.
20. Cavaliers (from Lakers)
Ricky Grace PG 6'1" 180 20 C+ B- B C+ D+ B
Ricky Grace PG 6'1'' 180 20 C+ B+ B+ B- D+ B (+4)
We'll take it. There's more big jumps from here to the end of the draft until the top ten.
21. Pacers
John Marshall PG 6'0'' 212 22 C C+ B B D+ A
John Marshall PG 6'0'' 212 22 C B- B+ A- C- B (+5, -1 potential)
Hell of a TC for one of the last ten picks of the draft. Maybe Heebs has a potential backup PG now that Frank Ntilikina is the future for the division rival Hawks.
22. Grizzlies
Eric Leckner C 6'11'' 265 22 B C D+ C+ C+ B
Eric Leckner C 6'11'' 265 22 B C D+ C+ C+ B (even)
23. Celtics
Randolph Keys SF 6'7'' 195 22 C+ B- C- C+ C+ B
Randolph Keys SF 6'7'' 200 22 C+ B- C- B- C A (even, +1 potential)
24. Kings
Sylvester Gray SF 6'6'' 230 21 B C C B- B- C
Sylvester Gray SF 6'6'' 230 21 B C C B- B- C (even)
25. Heat
Tom Garrick PG 6'2'' 185 22 C+ B C+ B- C- C
Tom Garrick PG 6'2'' 185 22 B- B+ B- C+ C- C (+2)
Very interesting TC for Canes. +1 across scoring grades and handling but defense drops a little.
26. Hawks
Morlon Wiley PG 6'4'' 185 22 B- B- B- C+ D+ C
Morlon Wiley PG 6'4'' 185 22 B- B B- C+ D+ C (+1)
27. Spurs
Corey Gaines SG 6'3'' 195 23 B- B- C B- D+ C
Corey Gaines SG 6'3'' 195 23 B- B- C C+ D+ C (-1)
28. SuperSonics
Ledell Eackles SG 6'5'' 220 22 B C+ C- C+ C B
Ledell Eackles SG 6'5'' 225 22 B B- C B- C B (+3)
Elite GM Fason finds a steal and manages to squeeze a good TC out of an otherwise unspectacular group at 2.28.
29. Timberwolves
Barry Sumpter PF 6'11' 215 23 B- D D+ C+ B- B
Barry Sumpter PF 23 6'11'' 215 B- D C- C+ B- B (+1)
