Wild Wild West RoundTable
1a. Name one move that you have made in 4.0 that you ended up regretting?
Hmm I don't think I regret any moves. All of mine have been pretty solid for me. Two firsts for Truck, McGinnis and two firsts for Collins and McAdoo, McAdoo and Knight for Webster and Hollins. I regret not offering more money to Hollins and Collins in FA. Especially since both of them had good TC's.
Probably the Mike Gale for a first. I kind of panicked after Brian Taylor left in FA, and for some reason thought I was a PG away from being a solid team. This obviously wasn't the case and I ended up giving up a lotto pick because of it.
I am currently regretting resigning Archibald to a 4 year deal. If Gervin had come back, it would have been a great move. I think it's a pretty reasonable deal for a guy who always has great percentages and is a more-than-adequate fill-in whenever someone gets hurt (he scored 44 points in one game when Buse was hurt this year), but I can see the tear down of my roster coming very soon, and I doubt the trade market is going to be very hot for him.
Drafting Jimmy Paxon at number 4 instead of Sidney Moncrief. I was so torn, and took a lot of time before I finally made my decision. I decided to go with the bigger SG, and even though he hasn't been bad, Moncrief has flourished and proven to be an impactful scorer.
1b. 20's, after years of turning down (for what?) returning to the league, what finally brought you back to TMBSL?
I had turned down the opportunity to return to the league because I felt like I had too much going on in my life to jump back into the league. When I am in the league, I spend way too much time on it and I knew that if I had decided to join again, it would take up a large amount of time. I didn't want that to happen any of the other times I had the chance to join. When I finally decided to join, it was really just kind of random and out of nowhere. I saw the thread on TMB bumped and saw that 4.0 was going strong, thought "hey that sounds kind of fun and I think I would have the time now". Signed up and then I really wanted back in. Glad to be here.
2. Name one trade that you passed on that you now regret?
I also don't think I regret any passed trades. Nothing comes to mind and a quick look through old messages confirms that. I've had a few almost trades this year that would have been very good for my franchise that fell through. That's really frustrating but I don't think I could have done anything about that.
I'm not sure there is anything that stands out that I was offered which I really regret. Maybe trading Adams sooner, but there was no predicting the Celtics do what they did and get Lanier.
I actually don't have any of these right now. People have not come to me with many trade offers during the course of 4.0, probably because my roster was totally locked in until this season. (sidenote: guys, come to me with offers. Everyone can be had. I like young players more than picks.)
Yeah, this is going to be pretty much impossible for me to answer. I haven't been in the league for over 2 years until I recently joined back in, and there haven't been any trades I have been offered since then that I regret not making. I am sure there are plenty from the old leagues but I can't remember any of them.
If I go the next two years without a title, which is very likely, I will have regretted that Elvin Hayes trade. He's been good, but he hasn't necessarily been the player I thought I would have when trading for him.
3. Post a gif of your reaction anytime Ian starts unloading his nostalgia cock all over shout.
4. Bankz just became a Father and had a baby boy. If you could tell Maxen one thing about his Papa, what would it be?
If you piss him off and he'll trade you. It will be the best thing for your career.
Make sure any time Dad agrees to something it's in writing with his signature.
wait, he really named his son Maxen? that's a real name? Well, Maxen needs to know that his father expects entirely too much from European imports who are going to play for the Bulls.
He paid for a hooker for a poster on the internet
If you ever hearing him talking to your Mommy about Dump, he's not necessarily talking about the situation that you left in your diaper.
5. Odin has mentioned that in the future he may post a casino award allowing you to relocate your team to another city. Keeping within the guidelines of staying in your region, which city would you relocate to and why?
The Midwest in America is pretty bad place to be compared to any other region imo which makes this a tough question. Does St. Louis count as midwest? If so I'll choose there. Seems like a pretty cool spot. Well populated. Great place for sports. An NBA franchise could be a great piece to add. But I will never move this franchise and I'm not a fan of anyone moving tbh.
Well, I've wanted to go back to Vancouver since 2.0, but since that was already granted...I guess San Diego, since it's the home of probably my favorite comedy in Anchorman, and the weather is nice.
Las Vegas. I think my franchise would do a much better job in Free Agency if we could offer all the fun and debauchery of Vegas, as opposed to the sobriety and clean living of Salt Lake City.
I guess I'd remove the Kansas City and just be Omaha? I don't know, I'm already in about the best spot I can be. And I would choose Omaha because it's my hometown.
This is easy. I would move my team 30 minutes West to God's City, Ft.Worth, Texas. Fort Worth shits all over Dallas and is by far the superior city of the metroplex. Less affliction and hair gel, more style and substance.
6. The most anticipated draft class ever is approaching and there is much debate into ranking the top 4 prospects. How would you rank them and why?
I'll be posting an article soon about this but here's a quick synopsis:
1. MJ - Clearly 1.1 imo. Obviously he has no weakness, but even greater than that, he has nothing that isn't a strength.
2. Barkley - I love Chuck. The C outside doesn't scare me as we've seen plenty of C outside SF's dominate in this software.
3. Hakeem - I have Dream over Bowie because of the potential.
4. Bowie - He's a lock to be a very good player but his ceiling isn't as high as Hakeem.
Hmm.. 1. Jordan 2. Bowie 3. Hakeem 4. Chuck. Jordan first because wings will always be better than big men in my opinion because of position scarcity and impact. Bowie is already pretty close to a top tier big and I like his grades. Hakeem over Chuck because of Chuck's size, and lack of outside shooting for a SF.
1. MJ- I believe the clearest path to winning a title in this league is with superstars on the perimeter, and MJ looks like the draft's best chance to get one. His grades are awe-inspiring.
2. Hakeem- Even though Barkley looks like he also has a decent shot at becoming a dominant wing player, the absurd upside of Hakeem is just too much to pass up.
3. Barkley- he looks like the next Larry Kenon to me. I generally prefer my SFs to make it rain from 3, but I would not refuse a player like Barkley.
4. Bowie- I just don't think he has the upside of the others. He seems like the one player who isn't destined to be an all-league type player. I do like Bowie in that if none of these guys even +1 over the course of their career, Bowie will be the best player. But if I'm going to miss, I want to miss big.
DISCLAIMER: THIS IS A COMPLETE SMOKESCREEN. NONE OF THESE ARE MY REAL RANKINGS
1. Hakeem Olajuwon - I really want to acquire a dominant big man and Hakeem looks the part. Feel like he would be a perfect guy to build around.
2. Michael Jordan - He is probably the best prospect but I never liked him that much in real life and that sours my sim opinion of him. Even though he won me my first title in 2.0
3. Charles Barkley - He looks fantastic as well. Defense is a little bit behind Hakeem but his outside scoring being higher probably makes him more of a sure thing.
4. Sam Bowie - I feel like everyone is going to have him at 4 but he probably deserves more respect. He is hurt by the fact that he was kind of a bust in the NBA. That affects GM's opinions. He isn't as sexy of a pick as the top 3, but he is likely to be just as successful.
AGAIN, THESE WERE JUST FAKE RANKINGS AND I AM TRICKING YOU ALL REALLY BAD RIGHT NOW
1. Jordan- He looks to be an elite scorer, and if he somehow gets to B+ handling, the league will be in a worlds of trouble.
2. Barkley- Mentioned by 2poor, I see a lot of the same qualities as Kenon in im, and he has turned out wonderful for me.
3. Bowie- I don't think he has a huge ceiling, but I don't think he will bust at all. He might be the safest of the big men in this draft.
4. Hakeem- I hate to put my favorite player of all time at number 4, but that outside grade scares the shit out of me. It will take some favorable tc's for The Dream to be able to put up elite percentages.
7a. Is there any point in time during this league that you contemplate quitting? And what caused it?
Yeah plenty of times actually. The closest I've been was in the fall of '12. My team was a solid contender but I was really busy with off the court stuff and I was only online once every few days. I don't think I shouted for like three months. I go through seasons frequently where I consider quitting.
The only time I came close to quitting was in 2.0 when work was dominating my time and I hated my life and couldn't be as involved as I wanted to be. This league I haven't come close to even thinking about quitting, even after dump struck gold rendering that trade terrible.
I thought about it awfully hard for the first 30 seconds after Day 1-2 of FA this year. That was some bullshit.
I actually quit in 2.0 when ZPZ and the Knicks gayly offerent Beniot Benjamin like a 1 year 18 mil dollar contract and stole him from the Mavericks. Jayrish and Bankz were crucial and getting me to stay and I thank them. Dirt and I were at a bar during the free agency of Kevin Durant. I was so irate when he left me to sign with the fucking Kings. I was honestly done with the league and ready to drink my sorrows away, but Dirt was pissed at me that I was quitting over that. He refused to talk to me for like the next hour until i assured him that I would not quit the league over that.
7b. What made you decide to quit TMBSL in the first place? Rumor is because MJ took over as commish.
No, it wasn't MJ, I would have quit regardless of who the commish was at the time. I quit because I was getting extremely busy in my real life. I had a wedding coming up very soon, I had recently started a new job, and as I said before, when I am in the league, I find a way to spend a lot of time on the league. I wanted to be able to focus on my job, the wedding, and other things and started visiting the league less and less. After I realized I hadn't been active in the league for a couple weeks, and MJ pmed me to see what was up, I let him know that they should go ahead and replace me because I figured it was time to quit the league.
8. How much of your daily life revolves around sim league? Have you ever missed an "important" event because of sim league activies?
It depends on the season. If I'm a contender and we're in the middle of the playoffs, I have no problem with being 15-20 minutes late to dinner with friends. If I'm bored and have some time I'll sift through rosters thinking of possible trades. I'm a lot more active in the summers than the school year due to general free time. I love this league. It's like a playground for adults who love sports.
I used to really analyze box scores and lineups. I don't do that anymore. Not worth the time or effort. Once you're here long enough you realize how crazy this software is and you just accept it. I don't really care about who wins the most championships anymore because I know how much luck actually goes into it. Not just the playoffs but the draft, trades, player development, free agency, etc. Certainly there are gm's that are better than others and that shows but once you get the top 8-12 guys, anyone can win and it doesn't mean that they're better than any of the other top guys.
It's probably more important than I should admit. I haven't missed any event because of stuff here but I've certainly checked the league at weddings, funerals, sports events etc.
More than it should. I haven't missed anything important, but my wife did get pissed at me for checking my phone repeatedly to negotiate the Robinzine deal during a meeting with a financial planner. I also completely neglected my activities as a patient care volunteer at a children's hospital during the 3000 playoffs. I was supposed to be doing room visits, and I did not visit one room all night, just sat in a recreation area and pressed refresh on the computer every 30 seconds. I don't think anyone died though, so we good.
I wouldn't say my daily life revolves around sim league at all, however I do spend a lot of time on the league. I really enjoy the league so I spend a lot of my free time doing stuff related to the league and I use it as a quite effective tool to put off more productive things that I should be doing in my life. I have never missed an important event because of the sim league, but I will bring my phone with me to family events or something to make sure I get draft picks in, for example.
Like everyone else, I spend way too much time on the site. I spend a lot of time trying to improve the site in any little way I can. Like Dil I spend some time combing through rosters looking at certain players and think of creative ways of trying to trade for them. I have never missed an event per say, but I have definitely delayed a few things in my life, or even ignored a few things in my life for playoffs and free agency results.
9. Money not being a factor, are there any sim gm's wedding that you would attend if you were invited?
Not at this point. I would have to meet you guys in person first.
I imagine I'd go to Trofie's, maybe MJ's. Honestly if invited, I'd probably at least try and make it to anyones. I also hate flying more than anything except snakes and sharks, so it'd be tough.
weddings are great fun, so i would go to pretty much any sim league wedding except for devine's hilljack couch-burning trailer park wedding and rw's ceremonial slap in the face of the traditional family unit.
Sure, I would attend anyone's if I were invited and money were not a factor. Sounds fun. This is a terrible answer. I would definitely attend dump's wedding.
To be honest, I would go to most GM's weddings in a heartbeat. I was actually invited to go to Bankz when he got married, but didn't have the vacation time to get away at the time. I've me a good amount of the GM's in real life and consider a lot of you friends.
10. Fason wrote an article a few days ago ranking the top 25 most valuable assets in the league. Assuming Magic Johnson is not an option, who would you say is the most valuable?
Gervin. He's only gotten better and better. He's 27, locked up for six years, and is having the best season of his career. His stats are insane.
It's pretty close for me between Moses Malone, Neon Boudreaux, David Thompson, and Alvan Adams. Neon is 20 and on a rookie deal so I think I'd have to go with him just based on having at least like 12 more years before he starts falling off based on age, plus his next 3 years are pretty cheap as well.
I put a pretty enormous premium on guys still on their rookie deals, so even though there are several better players in the league, and even a better one on his own team, I would take Big Dog. Getting that kind of production for 2 mil a year is absolute insanity, and it's completely absurd that Jerry doesn't have that team in a top 4 playoff spot right now. Bernard King's shitawful defense drops him to the number 2 spot.
I am still very new to this league in particular and am still getting used to who all the best players are and their contract situations. I will give my best opinion after looking through everyone's rosters:
1. Alvan Adams - his skillset is incredible, he is a rare talent, and his performance seems to live up to his grades.
2. Bill Walton - I covet duc's young big. He is exactly the type of building block I am looking to build around and I like his age and contract situation. I am guessing I have him higher than most.
3. Bobby Jones - He looks to me like the league's best wing defender and he can score as well. Contract is long and not the huge max.
Gervin is arguably the best player in the league and he's still 27 years old and locked up on a long term contract, and his shooting percentages are just outstanding. Funny that after Magic, Jerry West may have the top 2 valuable assets in the league.
Hmm I don't think I regret any moves. All of mine have been pretty solid for me. Two firsts for Truck, McGinnis and two firsts for Collins and McAdoo, McAdoo and Knight for Webster and Hollins.
