As many of you guys know I'm a pretty private person and try to keep my personal stuff away from my online life.
A lot of you guys have been some of my longest e-friends.
I'd like to share something because I feel at this time talking about it might help me deal with things.
My dad recently underwent a heart bypass surgery, during his recovery, he developed a stroke and caused his brain to swell up, to the point of the doctors needing to perform emergency surgery to reduce the pressure.
As of today, the surgeons tell me the damage is severe, the initial best case scenario of him only being partially paralyzed seems like a pipe dream now. Its very likely he will be in a vegetative state, at which point me and my mom (along with his power of attorney family friend) will have to make the ultimate decision.
If you're not busy with your lives, tell the people you care about that you love them, because you just never know.
Thank you all for reading my rant.

Ian I'm sorry to hear that. I hope that whatever chance he has to have a semi normal life comes through, no one should have to make that decision and I'm sorry that may happen. I know you're very private but I think most here are good guys and hear for you

Damn that sucks. I am so sorry to hear that Ian.
I'm hoping for the best outcome. I echo eric's thoughts that we're here and that talking to a professional might also be helpful.

Thank you guys, it means a lot.
We received some new information today regarding what happened.
After his bypass surgery, the standard protocol for these cases is to keep patients sedated for 4-6 hours and attempt to bring them out afterwards to access the neurological conditions.
But what ended up happening was, my dad's procedure was finished at around 6 PM on monday, the surgeon told us it was successful and he was moved to the ICU. With that information, me and my mom went home to get some rest and came to visit him on 5 AM Tuesday. By that time, he still has not woken up yet, but we were told by the nurses and everything is fine, his vitals all look good etc.
Then at 9 AM, we received the news that he had a massive stroke and had to undergo emergency surgery to remove his skull just to relieve some of the pressure, which is were we got the info of his current condition.
Today we found out that the nurses apparently forgot to bring him out of sedation overnight, it wasn't discovered until the ICU doctor arrived at 6 AM that he found out my dad has apparently been under sedation for 11 hours, his words to us was "I was beyond angry and when I asked 'why was he not brought out', I received *no clear answer*"
Right now the case is under investigation, my mom will look into hiring a lawyer for what case we might have for negligence on the hospital's part.
She's in a very fragile place right now mentally and I'm no better.
Would anyone happen to have an idea of what sort of damages we could be looking at?

I went to law school, but am by no means a medical expert....but I think a shit ton. That is extreme negligence.

the ICU doctor told us that because of how big his stroke is, even had he brought out earlier and this was discovered earlier, it still might not have made a difference.
but from our point of view, protocol was violated, and there is no chance that discovering his stroke earlier could somehow lead to a worse condition than where we currently are. The difference, even if 0 could only go in the positive direction in terms of his recovery prognosis.
it's too late to point fingers or get angry right now, I don't want anyone fired or shamed, but my mom deserves an answer for how she'll take care of herself for the rest of her life. I don't want to get rich off of this or even want a single penny of any possible settlement money myself, but my mom deserves compensation.

Really sorry to hear this. Unfortunately I know nothing about the legal side of it. Sounds like there is an attorney or two in here that might be able to offer some insight.
Wishing you guys all the best.

This is awful news Ian. I wish nothing but the best for you, your mother, and any other family and friends.
I became noticeably angry reading your post about how it went down, I can't even imagine how you and your mom must be feeling. Let me know if you need anything.

Today we were told that the medication and other methods to try to relieve the pressure in his brain hasn't worked. Their next step is to try to bring his body temperature back up (his temperature was lowered to 34 degrees celsius as part of the measure to reduce the swelling) to normal to determine if my dad still has any brain activity. But the prognosis at this point is pretty grim and final.
Right now we're informing friends, co-workers etc to give them a chance to see him one last time. My uncle will arrive tomorrow night as well as the family power of attorney friend from Canada. We will discuss the next step.
In the meanwhile, we'll seek out legal counsel about this, enormous thanks to canes for the help he's provided me in that area. I'll keep you guys updated.

Just received the money everyone sent in the mail,
Thank you guys from the bottom of my heart. I'll put this money towards a remembrance gift for my mom in October (her birthday), maybe a commissioned framed artwork or something of her and my dad.
