One of the things that I've always hoped to be able to quantify in this league is what the market value of a win is in Free Agency so that I can make more wise choices about who to spend money on and set limits for myself so that I don't overpay an average player (see Cornell Green) because I'm worried what his market might be. Now that I am on #TeamSpreadsheet, I set out to do that.

First, I tried to create a metric to express how many wins a player created per million dollars he was paid. Lets call these WS/Mil (for Win Shares per Million Dollars of salary). I took Eric's win shares metrics and put them together with our salary data to create the following table:

So, on the high end, you see players like Channing Frye, Tyler Zeller, Johan Petro, and LaSalle Thompson who are putting up decent production on minimum contracts have the highest WS/Mil values and at the bottom of the spectrum exist your high-end tank commander Point Guards well into the negatives.

Now that we know how many wins per million dollars each player creates, we can figure out what the average value for a win was in 3047. This year, the average player contract created 0.62 wins per million dollars spent. Obviously, this has some limitations due to some outlying values in the dataset, but we'll get to that later. So since the average player creates 0.62 wins per million dollars, you would expect a player on a 5 million dollar deal to create at least 3.1 win shares by the end of the year for you to be getting at least average return on investment. I created the table below to give you an idea of what return you should expect to get to be average on different contract levels below:

So based on what you see here, the average player on a first year max contract should be a player like Terrance Jones, Danny Granger, or Jayson Tatum. For a Supermax contract, you'd expect to have an average return if you get a player like John Havlicek, Anthony Davis, or Dillon Brooks.

HOWEVER, this data is obviously skewed by the existence of our "tanking" players, or the players that go out and create negative value. Removing them from the dataset and only taking the players that created Win Share totals greater than or equal to zero, the average WS/Mil jumps to 0.87. At this rate, you'd expect a 5 million dollar deal to return you 4.35 win shares. The table below shows what you would expect the average return to be for different contract levels:

So based on what we see here, the average player on a second (or super) max basically needs to be Reggie Theus or White Chocolate (note: pronounced CHA-coe-LAH) to give you an average return on your money. For an average return on the first year of a regular max, you want to see production on the level of Svi, Mario Elie, or Prince. For your MLE to be an average or better investment, you need to get production like Boris Diaw or Tim Thomas (lol Billy King).

So now we come to the question of what happens if we do the opposite and only look at the tanking players? How much does a loss cost? By tanking taking only the players that produced less than zero win shares, our XLS/Mil (or Expected Loss Shares per Million) is 1.87. Below is the average return for different contract levels when paying for tank commanders:

So after learning all of this, I set out to figure out who in the league spends their money the most wisely. So I took each player and I found out how much excess value they create by taking their WS/Mil and subtracting the average WS/Mil for all players (0.62). That table is below:

Agreed but I decided to keep them in the dataset to highlight the team-building value of having effective rookie contract players on your team. It's one of the tools you can use to win.

there are 14 guys making over $18.5m, seven producing positive excess win shares and seven negative
there are 34 guys making between $12.5m - $18.5m with the same 50/50 split, exactly seventeen and seventeen
i would have guessed the supermaxes were a lot worse

with that said, six(!!!) of the seven plus supermaxes are point guards and five of the negatives are not
the first max level is a little more evenly distributed but six of the top seven pluses are point guards too

quick note, if you swap the columns in the last table it'll look a little neater. you always want the long text column the farthest right

not sure how to remove the rookie scale guys from the equation. you could rule out anyone with 2 or less years of experience, then guys with exactly 3 you could check against the possible first round salaries. some guys would fall through the gaps but that's life

Another issue is that this analysis assumes the relationship is linear.

In a competitive market, there is a premium to be paid to go from good to great. That said, I imagine most max level players might not generate the same WS/mil as players on lower salaries, but that is because due to the scarcity of elite players, GMs should be and are willing to pay what it takes to acquire the players who can take you from 52 wins to 60 wins.

Basically, what I am saying is a guy can be earning "below average" wins/mil and be on an okay contract.

Wins should (and do, IMO) get more expensive from 10-15 win shares than they are from 0-5 win shares for a player.

So I looked at this yesterday taking all players and then the dataset without the tankers and linear trendlines had the highest r^2 values in both datasets around .45 to .5

Gonna find a way to take out rookie contracts today and look at it and see if this theory holds true for players who have hit FA.
