JOE DIRTS AUTO TRADER HELP GUIDE FOR DUMMIES
Here is a little run down on what I think is important and what to look for when your new to the TMBSL.
Inside Scoring
While dealing with a deadly alligator, aka an A- inside big man, you must know what and who your dealing with. When some GMs first come in the league they automatically think they need these guys more than anything else. That can be true at times but what most already know is these Centers and Power Forwards can take shots away from your elite super stars. With players such as Elvin Hayes and Artis Gilmore they may do more bad than good. There are the hand full of Big Men such as Lanier, that really can be a great asset to your team. I always wondered while being commioner if it could be different if we started a new, welp i believe i was wrong. I've realized really quick trading for the wrong big man can handcuff you for some time. Here are a few examples of the good and the bad, and what to look for when your shopping the open market.
The Good:
Bob Lanier C 31 6'11'' 260 A- C C+ A+ A- B
-25.4ppg 12.5 2.7 1.3 2.8 1.5 .514 .822 .000
King Joff is one of the few freak of natures in the league. We found this out after his magno MVP performance right out the gate in 3000. With only a handful of Bigs above 48 fg% he is a must have if you can get your paws on him. The 1st instinct GMs look at is the Bigs FT% but i think its decieving. Of course its nice if your Big shoots 80% but i honestly dont think it helps the Inside game as much as some believe.
The Bad:
Artis Gilmore C 30 7'2'' 240 A- C- C+ A+ A B
-18.2ppg 13.3 3.3 0.8 3.6 1.2 .433 .698 1.000
Gilmore is over 85 in strength and Inside, I'm honestly not sure what his problem is. I always thought an Inside game would help out a Big but after 4.0 has started i believe i'm wrong once again. I'm starting to believe if the big doesnt have 95+ Inside he will never be able to score at 45% from the field.
The Prospect:
Before 1st TC: Dave Greenwood PF 6'9'' 222 22 B C C- B B A
Dave Greenwood PF 24 6'9'' 227 B+ C C- B+ B+ B
- 28.5ppg 12.0 2.3 1.0 3.2 2.1 .464 .712 .300
First things first do you think size really matters? I'm not sure i try to look at grades and productions over weight and height. Greenwood has zero ziltch notta RC/TC points put into him. Of course when your looking to draft a rookie big at the age of 22 Bs across is a must..unless of course you are taking a 18 or 19 year old (Cliff Ice T).
Field Goal %
This is the most important stat of all TMBSL in my humblest opinion. The players that have 70-100 inside, 80-100 jumper and 75-100 3pt are the main squeeze of the elite. I know alot of GMs think 3 pointers don't matter but i truly believe its up there when your looking for the next Gervin. The software doesn't play favorites when it decides what scoring attribute it wants to upgrade or downgrade. I saw solid players in 2.0 have 45 3s and stay there. I saw some where all they did was grow in 3 pointers. Then you have the lucky ones that actually get better inside as they get older. I've never really seen wings get better in strength and absolutely never in jumping. Ian might call me a liar but the percentage of a rookie with C+ inside actually improve to B+ is slim to none, unless they are young with alot of potential and that potential gets better after their rookie year. I will always preach the better inside and jumper you have the better your FG% will be.
The Good:
Larry Kenon SF 26 6'9'' 215 A- C+ C A+ A- B
- 28.6ppg 10.6 3.5 1.9 0.6 1.5 .521 .849 .289
Kenon is a prime example of all Inside and all Jumper. He owns the Regular Season Record with 52% and is holding steady this season once again. His +1 outside from last season hasn't done much to improve his stats but who needs it when you lead the league.
The Bad:
Bobby Jones SF 27 6'9'' 215 B+ A C+ A+ B A
-31.6ppg 8.9 3.9 2.6 1.6 1.4 .449 .813 .444
While Bobby Flay has tremindious numbers and grades his FG% is a bit lackluster if i do say so myself. I'm not sure how many games he's played at PF and how many at SF but his career FG% is less than 45.
The Prospect:
Sidney Moncrief SG 24 6'3'' 185 C+ A C- A- D+ A
-24.1ppg 5.1 1.6 2.1 0.4 1.1 .495 .941 .446
This is Sidney the Dean Moncrief's house! The #5 pick in the 01 draft is having a hellacious season playing along side some solid teammates. His FG% is nice his FT% leads the league and the lakers record reflect a dynasty in the making. At only the age of 24 the C+ inside wont improve grade wise but i'm sure its mostly inside and not jumping or strength. Nice trade HandsomeReek.
3 Point %
I've spoken a little about this earlier in the article and i'm going to repeat my self a bit. I think you have players like Dennis Johnson that have 50% across the board. I know the software can software but i've been behind the looking glass and im a believer that the better 3pt attribute you have the better percentage your going to shoot. Most think the 3 point attribute just reflects how many times that player will shoot and not change his actual percentage. Pop in the tapes and we'll see what i'm talkin bout'.
The Good:
Ricky Sobers SG 26 6'3'' 198 B- A B+ B+ C- C
-18.9ppg 4.9 3.5 1.7 0.3 0.9 .461 .828 .472
Sobers doesn't shoot alot and only averages 18 ppg but has a better percentage shooting the 3 than attempting a lay up.
The Example:
Magic Johnson SF 22 6'8'' 230 B- A- A- A+ B A
-24.4ppg 9.2 9.0 1.8 2.5 3.4 .467 .857 .410
Magic was over 85 Inside as a rookie and must be around 85 jump shot to be 85% from the stripe. With that said why does his 3 point suck unless its around 50-60 range.
Handles
Passing, Handles, and Quickness all determine what your players "Handles" are. This is the part where i describe how much of this salt goes with that pepper, oh yea and can't forget the sprinkle of lowry salt. I wont go there i'll just give you a heads up on what i think is a little more important and what to look for. Quickness needs to be put up by the curb but thats my :twocents:. Anyway, In my opinion handles mean more about how many Turnovers Player A will get while passing is more of how many assits they are going to get.
The Good:
Foots Walker PG 28 6'1'' 172 C+ C+ A+ A+ C B
-18.0ppg 5.1 9.8 2.5 0.2 1.3 .491 .904 .419
Foots has the best Handles in the league. Avg around 10 dimes per game with nearly 1 TO per game. If i had to guess he should have around 90+ handles and 85+ Passing depending on his quickness. Its hard to tell because he does support that A+ Defense so i could be way off.
The Example:
Grant Hill SF 22 6'8'' 235 B+ B B B+ C+ A
-27.3ppg 8.3 3.7 1.5 0.1 5.6 .477 .843 .416
Grant Hill is doing what he does best in only his second season of his career. He leads the league in TOs by a wide margin and is NOT playing point. I truly believe his turnovers are in the 50s range, even with an +8 bonus into Handles he will always avg over 4 TOpg. Other than that hes a beast but good lawd his cross over is shawn bradleeish.
Solid TC/RC Options:
Inside- Any player would be nice...unless your big man is defensive. If so please do me a favor and not imporve their scoring because its impossible.
Jumper - If you have a Rookie and he's a scorer this is priority.
Passing - Best for PGs or if your SF is B handles and he is over 85 in other catagories.
Handles - If your Magic Johnson you need these. This goes to other young guards that turn the ball over a bit too much.
Perimeter D - My least favorite because if he sucks he will always suck
Driving D - If your trying to turn a SG into a SF or a PF into a SF..or you just want to have the next Dan Roundfield.
Post D - Its important but 96% of big men shoot like shit anyway.
Rebounding- Self explanitory. If your Caldwell Jones it wouldnt hurt.
Not So Good TC/RC Options:
Quickness - I dont think its that important. It just makes the D and Handle grades look better on the outside
Jumping- If you want that B+ inside to be A- but you know it really won't improve anything.
Its OK TC/RC Options:
3PT - If all the other cats are over 85 i'd tap it.
Steals - Nothing wrong in changing that 1 steal a game to 1.2
Blocks - I'd rather my guy avg 1 block than .7..yaoming
