Saw this article on SB Nation and thought it would be a fun exercise here. Basically, they went to each of their NBA team blogs and posed the question of what 8 players they would protect if an expansion draft took place today. The article has links to each site's explanation of why they protected those players, but I'm not really interested in that. Instead, let's take a shot at building the best 12-man team based on the unprotected players remaining. And here’s the full list. Pick four from each category (but not two players from the same team). Keep in mind that you are drafting the player and the contract:

Long term: Rozier, Korkmaz, Beasley, Yabusele, Zubac
Embarrassing those guys weren't protected tbh.

Yeah I was surprised the Boston blog left Rozier available considering how much Danny Ainge loves him. They chose to keep Zizic, which I kind of understand since he theoretically could provide a skill set their team is lacking, and Marcus Smart, who I would've given up but who is probably someone they want now that Avery Bradley is gone to cover for IT on matchups

sim league version: brandon knight, andrew harrison, rudy gay, zach randolph, greg monroe would make the 3050 suns seem WHACK by comparison to how stack my team was
real life version: george hill (sac 20m), matthew dellavedova (mil 10m), jameer nelson (den 5m), jose calderon (cle 2m) - 37 lance thomas (nyk 7m), wayne ellington (mia 6m), thabo sefolosha (uta 5m), marco belinelli (atl 7m) - 25 robin lopez (chi 14m), mason plumlee (FA? 6m cap hold), boban marjonovich (det 6m), joffrey lauvergne (sas 2m) - 28 total 90m, cap is 99m
woof there are a lot of horrible contracts among the available bigs. ian mahinmi is a nice player but $16m? woof.
if a lot of people do this i'll use 538's CARMELO projections and see how good the teams are, unless i can't figure out how they did their MP in which case i'll just do WS/48 or something

Savvy management by Mr. Grunfeld

I assume this is the best team you can make for the single year? I like what I have below. Not being able to take 2 from the same team made it hard, because I had to choose between Gay/Gasol, Anderson/Mbah a Moute, and a couple others. Long-term this team isn't bad contract-wise and would absolutely add lottery picks to the roster for the next 2 seasons. Guards are the real problem, because there are not great ones out there. The team below is definitely better than the Nets and Bulls next year.
Guards: George Hill, Tomas Satoransky, Fred VanVleet, Terry Rozier
Wings: Evan Fournier, Thabo Sefalosha, Luc Richard Mbah a Moute, Rudy Gay
Bigs: Kenneth Faried, Greg Monroe, Javale McGee, Spencer Hawes
edited to include George Hill

Also, the idea is this is an expansion team, so picking a bunch of vets who probably aren't going to stick around is probably not a realistic strategy. That being said, if we're judging it using CARMELO ratings that's probably the best way to go

The GAME. You don't play to just play it. I don't care if you don't have any wins, you go play to win. When you start telling me it doesn't matter, then retire, get out, because it matters.

You think they should've declined to match?

First year you need to attempt to be good. Bring in the fan support. Get some vets out there, reconstruct slowly with some veteran presence while folding in young draft picks and maybe go hard after an RFA or 2 after year one.
