Welcome to the GM Rankings RT. We're going to do some plain old GM rankings as well as some new categories of rankings we probably haven't ever done before, as well as discuss our methodology. We tried to focus on the last decade or so of results, since that's when a large group of GM's now in the league and on this RT joined or re-joined (BK, Tim, myself, druce, etc.).
1. Let's start by getting a primer on your methodology when ranking GM's. What do you value and what do you not value? Do you reward a GM with consistent, if not spectacular, success or a GM with the highest peak performance despite much lower valleys in between? Do you consider making the playoffs, conf finals, finals "success"? Do you tend to judge results or actions with more weight? Describe your process.
Eric
a. Are they one of us? Are they a good fella?
b. Consistency is much, much, MUCH more important. Even a blind clock finds an acorn twice a day, are you awake and do you speak English?
c. Playoffs in general don't factor that much into it for me. I've read the research on BOTH sides and come to my own conclusion, there's just way more randomness involved than the real playoffs we're used to in our human lives. It's not the same.
d. With that said, it's all about results. Seasons happen so fast that worthwhile processes are gonna pop, they just are. Do I care if GBG or Timpig inherits an all time great point guard and win titles, no. Do I care if people are consistently in the 50 wins level, yes. Am I a big fan of Donald Rumsfeld, yes.
Druce
Given the unpredictable-ness of the playoffs, all we can really hope to do is build a team that is a contender. I don’t think making the playoffs makes a team a contender, though we’ve seen a few 8 seed upsets I believe those are just luck more than anything. There is something to be said for being consistent, but at the end of the day we’re all trying to win a championship, so I personally think higher of GMs whose teams are contenders rather than those who toil on the cusp but rarely break through.
Majic
For me, the most important thing a GM can do is have a contending core as often and long as possible. To me it doesn’t matter how it’s done; through tanking, FA or Trades. At the end of the day, can a GM put together a core worthy of a championship, and then once that cores prime is over are they able to move on and get a new contender within a reasonable time frame. One thing that I do take into consideration is luck, as I don’t like to reward a GM for sheer luck. Me getting Svi in FA at the very beginning of a tank took no skill outside of having cap space. GMs shouldn’t get the benefit of situations like that. In terms of what I view “success” I first think making the playoffs is key, and then deep playoff runs is the biggest thing I look at. So much of winning a title is luck, but if a GM can always have a team making deep playoff runs then you know it’s a well-built team.
Tim
The thing that I value most is activity, which, for the most part, directly correlates with success, unless you’re eric. In my short time here it seems there have been a small number of GMs who have consistent success, but I’m sure that would change with a greater sample size. I think GMs who have a mission and a path - whether that’s tanking to get the picks you need to start over, or knowing the assets you need to give up to win that year - are the best. Fason accumulated about 350 first-round picks and complete cap flexibility. If he were sticking around as a GM he could build a dynasty.
Heebs
I judge success at what they are attempting to do. If you're trying to tank, success at tanking. If you're trying to win, success at winning. If you're trying to get the eighth seed every year, you need to reassess how you are GM'ing eric. GMs like 20s and me tried to sustain success as long as possible. Championships are icing on the cake, but being a championship contender is more important than selling out for a ring or two. GMs like Ankly tend to go all-in when they have a chance. GMs like Fason are masterful at buying and selling.
JHB
Do they win, win, win no matter what. Are they in the playoffs with a chance to go deep every season. When they tank do they do it expeditiously then immediately go back to competing? Do they linger in mediocrity forever or bounce back quickly? Do they not suck? These are the questions I look to answer when judging the value of a GM.
2. Let's start with some specific categories that we don't often rank or drill down on. Give a top 3 and bottom 3 and a brief explanation of your choices.
A. Best content creators in the league (best shout presence, funniest poster in threads, articles, casino, draft profiles, etc.)
Eric
I don't like voting for myself in these things but the only people who post articles regularly are me and Pod Save 4.0, so I mean what am I supposed to do, abstain? The only 100% reliable way to get this RT pregnant is a vote for Eric. My hands are tied. I stay out of the casino so can't speak on that.
Druce
Best:
Eric – I think this one is self-explanatory, but he’s done a great deal for the league, he produces a ton of informative articles and real life NBA analysis. I personally enjoy his personality and humor as well.
SPL/Tim/Fecta – I could and may very well be wrong here, but I believe SPL introduced the podcast to the league, maybe it was bankz? But I’d rather not give Bankz credit for anything. Tim and Fecta do a great job with their pod as well. I enjoy calling into the pods and shooting the shit with everyone.
Worst:
Ank – Just an awful shout presence. Even with bonus points for bringing Mafia to the board he’s still a top 5 WOAT social GM. Habitual line stepper, contrarian button pusher.
Soup – Though I’ve gotten to know Soup via playing fifa and him and I are quite similar most of the time, sometimes he made shout unbearable. Soup if you’re reading this, fuck you.
Ian Boyd – Quick show of hands of anyone who enjoys Ian…
…Don’t worry I’ll wait…
…No one huh? Shocking.
Majic
Top 3:
Timpig
Eric
Heebs
This was hard to pick 3 as I think there are 6-8 GMs that add a lot of activity to the league daily. But Timpig is active and really does a great job with the draft and overall excitement for the league. Heebs does a lot with the draft profiles and really has kept things going for us. Eric as always provides insight and information that is essential to the league.
Bottom 3:
MJ
KN
Duc
This could have gone to any of the non-active GMs but these are the 3 I chose. Just nothing really brought to the table outside of being around to do minor things for their team.
Tim
Top 3:
Eric. There’s no other right answer. Pretty sure he goes back and reads any Shout that he’s not online for since he responds to every question no matter how long ago it was posed. Also, the Rookie Ladder gets me every time. And considering no one else writes actual articles anymore, the options for this category are pretty slim.
Ank. Strictly for his Shout presence. He pretty much sucks at everything else but his undeserved arrogance for drafting Collin Sexton is pretty entertaining to watch. I think he wrote an article once before I arrived. Wow, congrats. Between Sexton and that article, he’s really killing it on and off the court.
Myself. I guess Fecta should get an honorary nomination since he co-hosts Pod Save 4.0 with me, but I refuse to give him the satisfaction. Especially since he’s on a major high right now since some guy we played flag football with last night asked if he played college football.
Bottom 3:
I mean, most GMs don’t create content and many don’t much time in Shout. So I guess I’ll pick three who seem the least active - Scat, Skrouse, MJ. I had a pretty long anti-BK rant here but I’m choosing to be the better man during the holiday season and keep those thoughts to myself. Happy Holidays, BK.
Heebs
Ankly - funny in shout. Stirs the pot without being too offensive. Needs to write an article soon.
Eric - has done more for sim league than any other non-commish GM.
Pete - has had a little downturn in activity recently, but his articles are exemplary.
Honorable mention - SPL for his always ground breaking interviews.
Heebs - hasn't been around at all. barely does predictions. doesn't write articles at all.
BK - more often than not is pissing someone off in shout. Articles show poor sense of humor.
Soup - promises power hours; doesn't deliver. Weak.
JHB
Best
Eric - I like win shares and other analysis articles he does, active in shout, pretty sure he's the only person keeping the OT board from collecting dust as he diaries his thoughts
Tim/Fecta - Pod Save 4.0 is great
SPL - for bringing the pod to the people
Worst
Fason - all of his content is trolling that BK falls for
JHB - stop c/p'ing data into a spreadsheet and reposting it as an original article every season, JFC
BK - I don't mind him in shout but his articles are weird
B. Best at drafting in the lottery
Eric
b and c. I honestly don't think anyone has set themselves apart as being better or worse at drafting. Even mj doesn't draft undersized non blocking bigs anymore. *checks current draft*
Druce
Best:
Majic – Hit on Arenas, Baylor, Jason Williams, some pretty solid picks.
KN – Drafted Kyrie, Shuttlesworth I think? I’m not sure my memory is failing me and I haven’t paid close enough attention to recent drafts.
Ank/Tim – Drafted Sexton/Lonzo
Worst:
MJ – maybe its bad luck or not paying attention, or maybe he just sucks at drafting, I’m not too sure
Yawn – I don’t remember a stud he’s drafted
Scat – I feel like he’s drafted a lot of shitty players over the years.
Majic
Top 3:
Ank
Timpig
Majic
This was really hard to select based on just the last 10 years. Not many GMs get to pick in the lottery enough to justify being considered “top” so I just went with 2 GMs that picked absolute studs with a no brainer lottery pick. Then I picked myself as my I think I have done well to maneuver around the lottery to find great players. Having the chance to move down the draft, pick up assets and still end up with a top tier PG.
Bottom 3:
Eric
KN
Shaun
Eric simply because the man never makes a pick in the lottery, or the first round for that matter, so really he cant even be good at it. KN’s recent lack of star power through the draft is noticeable. He made a big move to load up on Yao and Duncan, only for it to never produce an elite team. Shaun is listed because I feel like Shaun has had a lot of picks in the lottery. He has Majerle but overall his teams haven’t been in contention and I feel like hes had a lot of chances to land another superstar.
Tim
Everyone? I think we usually have a pretty clear cut lottery. Oh, except for MJ. He still manages to screw up a lot of his lottery picks.
Heebs
MJ - he's the best at being ABLE to draft in the lottery
Heebs - Niko (1.11), Coop (1.12), Lue (1.13).
Pete - TMac > Yao. Fuck the haters, Pete. Fuck 'em.
MJ - just the worst lotto picker in the history of TMBSL
Skrouse - not good. Abe is such a bad pick.
JHB
Ank
Heebs
Majic
MJ
Skrouse
Scatman
C. Best at drafting post-lottery
Druce
Best:
Tim – he’s hit on a few guys outside the lotto
Druce – I’ve also hit on quite a few non-lotto guys
Heebs – Never picks in the lotto yet always has depth from drafting well
Worst:
Quite a few people have struck out pretty consistently, including most central GMs outside of Heebs.
Majic
Top 3:
Heebs
Druce
Ank
Heebs and Druce are long standing quality GMs that are able to supply talent to their teams in all avenues. Both continue to be good at finding quality players in the later parts of the draft. Ank is in here simply for finding Svi. That is the only reason.
Bottom 3:
I am going to be honest and say that for the most part this is a crap shoot for the league as a whole. Almost every GM has found a useful player later in the draft, but no one is particularly bad at it.
Tim
Trying not to vote for myself much in this RT, but JHB even called me out for my excellent late first round picks.
Heebs
Fason - look at how many picks he has outside of the lotto. This is the downside of him stepping down. With a GM, he'd have sold all those picks for a star. Oh well.
Soup - Helps when Odin is telling you who to pick. #cheatcodes
No worst.
JHB
Tim. I can't remember them all now but he had a solid string of them
Heebs. Same.
Ank
JHB. I've had some real stinkers.
Can't remember any others.
D. Best at FA (who most skillfully positions themselves to land max talent, who has a high success rate with MLE/LLE signings, etc.)
Eric
Gimme the Pistol. As expected he took a big hit to team success moving to the Beastlantic but even looking only at the most recent iteration he's done a great job keeping a third marquee player alongside his young core, and success has followed with a long string of 50 win seasons.
Druce
Best:
Scat – fucking scat luck.
Eric – seems to always find some gems in FA
20s – used to do a really good job with his MLEs
Worst:
Canes – Mike Conley
Billy – Lebron
GBG – Fucked himself for years with the Bosh contract.
Majic
Top 3:
Ank
Majic
Ward
Ank set himself up perfectly at the start of his tank and then closed it off with an amazing FA in grabbing important players in multiple positions. For me, I have consistently been able to snag good-great players via FA. Also I enjoyed being able to snag Bonzi Colson with a lower offer than Druce. Ward is always a sneaky good GM in FA. He may not get the stud players all the time, but he is able to consistently snag all-star level players on smart deals.
Bottom 3:
SPL
BK
GBG
I will start with BK as him losing LeBron was a nut punch. Granted I still think he made the right decision in his offer, its still bad to lose a player of his ability. However, he gave up a lot of assets for him the season prior, so at that point you are pot committed and just must offer him the full max. GBG is here simply for his Bosh contract. I am not sure who he was bidding against when he made that offer, but I am sure that no one was even close to offering Bosh that massive of a contract. Finally SPL, what’s there to say that hasn’t been said. Losing Wade and Bentil was a kick to the stomach, but losing them because of trying to under bid is the worst part. Yes SPL lucked out in FA with the Tacko signing, and yes he has Rory and just won a title. But to me it doesn’t excuse the bad decisions he made back to back.
Tim
I’ve quickly discovered that Scatluck is a real thing. Between Lebron and Orlando Graham, he’s done pretty damn well in FA.
Heebs
Ward - has had the most success at it.
Ankly - has won championships on the back of lucky FAs
eric - always finds bargains in FA
Canes - can't think of any good FA signings in Miami recently
GBG - not a great team building. Even his championship teams relied on trades and drafting.
JHB
Ward. Best at positioning himself for big opportunities in FA while still maintaining an elite core.
SPL. Always seems to have a better team than I expect and I think this is why.
Scatluck
GBG. Woof at the Bosh deal.
Canes. Seems to have a few holes that if he could fill in FA would push him right into the elite territory consistently, hasn't filled them.
Eric. He's not bargain hunting, he's dumpster diving.
E. Best at accumulating talent in the trade market
Eric
Gotta give this one to me too. Epstein, "Super" Mario, MAXver, Granger, Dirk, Wagner, Yao... the list is literally endless, and that's just in the last a hundred some odd trades.
Druce
Heebs – consistently reloads
Druce – I think I’ve historically done a good job retooling my teams with trades
Soup – Found a way to trade rape so many people, I don’t know how but people fell for it every time.
Worst:
Scat – soup victim
skrouse – Has taken on a lot of bad contracts, though Willie Anderson seems to be working out.
Yawn – I seem to remember a few bad trades he’s made.
Majic
Top 3:
Tim
Druce
Majic
Tim is on here for his uncanny ability to fleece other GMs out of top talent and in return not paying much of anything to get it. I tip my hat to you. Druce is on here for similar reasons that I stated in listing him one of the better drafting GMs in the league. Druce can find good talent and make savvy trades. He has accumulated a stick pile of trade assets while rebuilding his team into a playoff team. Lastly I listed myself as I think I have had a great ability to move pieces and players around while consistently coming out better for it.
Bottom 3:
SPL
Fecta
Odin
I will start with Odin as I put him in more on reputation than anything he has done very recently. Odin is always the type to trade around assets without much to show for it in the end. Fecta and SPL are on here for recent trades they have made, and yes im still salty. Listen, fecta gave up an absolute stud scoring PG that turned out to be the MVP of the playoffs in order to get a scoring Big and some other parts. I know he made it to the finals, but crazy things happen. We all know that having an elite PG can win you a title in this league no matter the defense. SPL is on here for the Dunn trade. I don’t thin I need to rehash my thoughts on it, but lets just say I think it was one of the worst trades of the last 20 season easily.
Tim
This is a tough one. Without going back and looking at all of the Completed Trades, I think Ward has been pretty good. Also, SPL. How he pulled off that heist in what he got back for Dunn still blows my mind. Nice work, SPL. Thanks for ruining 4.0 for the rest of us.
Heebs
Ankly - knows how to find good players. If he's asking for a player, there is a reason.
Eric - has stayed afloat this long without ever making his own lotto picks.
Tim - pains me to say it, but look at the success.
Pete - has done nothing to help TMac. Sad.
Heebs - should have traded his extreme depth for a star years ago.
JHB
Heebs. Always wheeling and dealing and keeping an elite core together while adding long-term pieces.
JHB. Traded for picks to draft Morris, Archie, Shabazz, Krstic, Willie Anderson mid-draft. Traded two firsts for Frank Ntilikina. Got Tim Thomas as a throw-in to a salary dump. Traded for Zarko back after he left in FA. Most of his players were acquired via trade.
Tim. Keeps an elite core together with smart trades.
SPL. Feel like he's made a few stinkers in my time back.
IDK
F. Best at side games (mafia, Secret Trump, casino, pick 'ems, predictions)
Eric
again I don't look at casino and we've had about one half of one ST game so I'm sticking with THE PISTOL.
Druce
Best
JHB – one of the best at mafia
20s – Ditto
Pete – Ditto
Worst:
Bankz – terrible mafia player
Fecta – goes MIA too often
Tim – aside from secret trump, goes MIA in mafia all the time.
Majic
Top 3:
Ank
Heebs
SPL
Ank and Heebs are on here for what they introduced to the league in terms of Mafia and Secret Trump. Both games are really fun and think its been a nice addition to the league overall. SPL doesn’t get enough credit for running the Bank and Casino. That has always seemed like a miserable job and I don’t think I would ever want to do it. So thank you SPL.
Tim
Pete and 20s were the best Mafia players IMO. I don’t have enough of a sample size from the rest of the games to say much more here.
Heebs
Pete - patient and reserved. very thoughtful.
SPL - shout out for doing the casino despite depressed interest.
JHB - great mafia player.
Bankz - doesn't need explanation
rv - signs up; doesn't participate
JHB
SPL. Runs casino and has been a solid player of side games.
20s and Pete. Best mafia players.
Tim. Sneaky good.
Ank and BK. Brought mafia to the masses.
Bankz. Just bad at mafia. Thought differently. Was wrong.
Ank and BK. Were not good players of TMB mafia.
3. We will call this the BK round. This is where we rank each other based on personal qualities or traits that we haven't necessarily shared, but we will dangerously assume about each other. Give a top and bottom 3
A. Rank by perceived intelligence
Eric
Yawn, Ankly, Pete. with regard to yawn I may be mistaking intelligence for baseless, unprovoked aggression. but i stand by it.
Druce
Top:
1. Heebs
2. Eric
3. Delap
Bottom:
1. Majic – Couldn’t win a 3rd grade spelling bee
2. Scat – I think he’s had trouble grasping how to succeed in this league
3. Duc – I’m not entirely sure why, I guess he’s just never said anything that made me sit back and say “I never thought of that”
Majic
Only doing a top 3 for this one as I don’t particularly like the idea of saying someone is stupid or not intelligent
Top 3:
Eric
Heebs
20s
Eric is a robot and has access to all the information on the internet, of course he is smart. Heebs seems to be a smart guy and have a good career. 20s is probably the smartest guy in sim league, IMO.
Tim
Top 3:
Eric. A computer automatically has the edge over any of us humans.
Heebs. It seems the really bad mafia players (like me) are very intelligent IRL.
Pete. It seems the really good mafia players are very intelligent IRL.
Bottom 3:
MJ since I don’t think I’ve seen him post a comment that was greater than three words in length
Eric. Can a computer really be considered “intelligent”?
Fecta because he is vegan and an intelligent person would never willingly give up the greatest thing in the world
Heebs

Ankly - smart but super lazy
20s - great combo of book and street smarts

Druce
Top:

Again, not doing a bottom 3 for reasons.
Top 3:
SPL
Heebs
Druce
SPL, I mean the guy owns a 70,000 square foot mansion in the Chicago suburbs. Those things go for like 2.5 million easy. Heebs lives in the quieter state of Michigan, but the guy owns the entire street that he lives on. He owns livestock. I mean its obvious he is loaded. Finally, Druce is in the final stages of building a 45,000 square foot mansion in one of the nicest parts of Detroit. That takes a lot of money to build. Loaded!
Tim
Top 3:
SPL owns a mansion
Heebs owns goats and is a lawyer I think
Three-way tie between Odin, BK, and JHB because all they ever talk about is their cryptowealth and I think I’m convinced
Bottom 3:
BK because he works at a battery store when he’s not an intern. I perceive him as being both wealthy and extremely poor.
Ank is Heebs’ secretary (I think)
Majic since I know he’s looking for a job right now

Top 3:

SPl
Tim
Eric offers so much to the league and everyone appreciates it. No doubt he is one of the nicest GMs in the league. Listen, recently I have been giving SPL a lot of shit but I genuinely like the guy and think he is great having in the league. I miss our podcasts. Tim has been one of the best additions to sim league. His overall activity and excitement has been the shot in the arm we needed and I think a lot of GMs appreciate it.
Bottom 3:
BK
Ank
Fason
BK is an easy one to list. While I will admit he has calmed down a bit and overall settling in. just was a rough start. Ank made a GM quit and his smugness over having Sexton has been shit to deal with. Fason is listed because I couldn’t really think of another current GM that stirs up shit. Fason is pushing for 4.0 to end.
Tim
Top 3:
Eric. You can’t dislike eric.
Pete. I think he’s pretty universally popular for being a good GM and good Mafia player.
Delap. A true family man and maybe the closest thing we have to a celebrity.
Bottom 3:
BK. Not as hated as he once was, but pretty sure he’s still far and away the most disliked.

Listen, I am the coolest guy amongst all my friends, theres no debate about it. JHB seems like a cool guy and someone that would be a good friend to have. Plus he is engaged so if a girl is willing to marry him then he has to be somewhat likeable. Tim is listed because he is a hockey player, and all hockey players are awesome.
Bottom 3:
Eric
Fecta
Ank
Eric is a robot and thus does not have the ability to have human friends. Fecat is a vegan and no one likes having “that one vegan friend” always pushing his veggie agenda. Ank just because ank likes to stir up shit and im sure that carries over to his real life.
Tim
Top 3:
Majic. He’s good at hockey so at least the 10-12 guys on his hockey team like him. That’s probably more friends than most of us have.
Shaun. I dunno, he strikes me as a guy who has a life.
Delap. If growing up in Eastern Washington taught me anything, it’s that the Mormon community sticks together.
Bottom 3:
JHB. Really not sure if he has any redeeming qualities IRL either.
Odin. I imagine all of his self-loathing makes him difficult to be around. I like the guy though.

Taco
This is a combination of results, history and what they offer to the league. Druce and Heebs have the track record of sustained success in sim league and as usual have playoff teams. Tim and Ank have had a great run over the last 10 years and Taco is probably the most unlucky GM besides me. He has had a great team for a long time and just never able to break through with a title.
Bottom 5:
BK
Eric
Odin
KN
Shaun
For this I tried to stick with the GMs that are active in league activities. Picking GMs like MJ and Ayyoe are easy when they are never around nor care to get a good team. BK has admittedly gotten a lot better as a GM in the last year or two, but his first few years were a trian wreck. Eric being included is simply due to his recent track record. His instistance on never having first round picks is starting to backfire on him as he is depleted in talent and not a lot of assets. Odin, KN and Shaun are listed because of what they have been unable to build. All 3 seemingly have had a lot of recent opportunities to put together a contending squad and have just been unable to.
Tim
Top 5:
Heebs. Always contending, always dealing. Somehow keeps great depth and has plenty of draft picks.
SPL. Tanked for one season then won a championship. That’s pretty impressive.
TimPig. Admittedly flawed since I’ve had Lonzo since day one, but I like to think I upgraded the talent around him.
Fecta. Also did a nice job with his tank and should be primed to finish 4.0 strongly, assuming Dan Cortese is everything the scouts say he is.
Ward. Another expert tank job. Brief tank, grab Randy Moss first overall, make a couple big moves in FA, re-acquire Chris Paul and BOOM. Contending again.
Bottom 5:
Ank. “Everyone look at me I’m so good at this because I took two days deciding whether or not to draft Collin Sexton.” Pick someone else and he’s consensus worst GM in TMBSL history.
MJ. Sorry, MJ. I feel like I’m going in on you hard here. It’s mostly just because you’re not around. I do appreciate you responding to my texts though <3
GBG. Somehow hasn’t figured out that you need an elite point guard to win the championship. Or, somehow hasn’t figured out that Phil Ford 2.0 isn’t an elite point guard.
Ayyoe. Nothing personal. He’s just not around except to make draft picks and set a DC.
Skrouse, I guess. I don’t think he’s gotten very lucky with his draft picks, so it’s tough to see what direction he’s going.
Honorable mention to Eric, who seems perfectly content with mediocrity.

Eric. He seems likely to be a pretty quiet, introverted guy. Not unlikeable, just shy.

As a reminder, results over the last 10 seasons is the biggest factor in these rankings. I did inject a little bit of history bias as well, but overall I based it on your perceived skill over the last 10 seasons. Overall I think Heebs is the best in the East as he always has a competitive team, even if he doesn’t have the rings to show for it.

Tim and Ank are 1 and 2 due to the success they have shared over the last 10 seasons. Druce is close to the top more so from historical success, but how quickly he was able to rearrange pieces and have a playoff team is impressive.

Bottom 5:
BK
Eric
Odin
