Anthony Davis during his sixth year in New Orleans:
27 PER, .21 WS/48, +5.1 on/off
two years with 10+ WS and .200+ WS/48 (probably gets another this year)
four All-Stars
two All-NBA
one fifth place finish in MVP
0 playoff wins
Kevin Love's six years in Minnesota, widely known as the New Orleans of Canada:
23 PER, .19 WS/48, +5.1 on/off
three years with 10+ WS and .200+ WS/48
three All-Stars
two All-NBA
one sixth place finish in MVP
0 playoff wins
Looks pretty similar to me.
But Anthony Davis is a great defender!
Is he?
Yes!
I was being rhetorical! Shut up!
Why don't you come over here and make me?
In Davis' six years with the Hornlicans, the team has been below average defensively in five, and on average 2.4 points worse than average.
In Love's five healthy years with the T'mberwolves, the team was below average defensively in four, and on average 2.5 points worse than average.
Weighting their DRtg On/Off by minutes played over these spans, Davis works out to a -2.3... but that still doesn't even get him to league average, and Love works out to a +0.4 so it's not like they're night and day. They're more like ebony and ivory, living in perfect harmony. Looks pretty similar to me.
But Davis' teammates pre-Boogie were all trash!
In the six years Love played in Minnesota, he accumulated 47 Win Shares. The next highest 'wolves were Nikola Pekovic with 18, Lucky Lukey Ridnour with 12, and Ricky Rubio with 11. To date the other New Orleanders look like Ryan Anderson 16, Jrue Holiday 14, and Tyreke Evans 10... looks pretty similar to me. And if there's any front office that can give the Pelicans' debacle a run for its money it's one run by David "I Drafted Two Point Guards Ahead of Steph Curry and All I Got Was This Lousy Meme" "KAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHN!!!" Kahn.
.
Everyone thinks NBA Champion Kevin Love is a bum now. Why? Because LeBron traded for him, and players shouldn't GM, that's not Playing The Game The Right Way. Back in his Minnesota days people were raving about him as a superstar MVP candidate just like they're doing for Anthony Davis now, then he got on a good team and instead of being the best at everything on his team he was the worst at some things. This is the outcome for Anthony Davis. Don't say I didn't warn you.
