Brett Brown was hired onto a lotto team, spent four years there, and now (maybe) will make the playoffs.
I couldn't help but wonder.
Who was the last coach to do that? Have any?
The pride of Cedar Rapids, Bill Fitch started his career with the expansion Cavs in 1971, absorbed five years in the lotto, and stayed on for three playoff years with 40 some odd wins.
That's it!
There were a bunch with three years, the most interesting were Dick Motta's expansion Mavericks, in the lotto for three years before having four playoff years starting in 1984. Unlike Bill, Thad Motta's dad had already been an NBA head coach for twelve years, including a championship with the then Bullets in 1978. Who knows why he decided to slum it in Dallas. As a bonus he came back for another two lotto years a decade later for some reason.
The future is blindingly bright for the 76ers. For Brett Brown, maybe not so much.
