League Officials Expressing Serious Concern After Another League Death
Sim League officials are trying to get the word out about mostly unregulated cryotherapy treatments in the wake of a tragic death. In late July, 23-year-old promising Spurs Point Guard Jesse Jamison was found dead in a cryotherapy chamber at the San Antonio spurs training facility he used in the off-season; the county’s coroner determined the cause of death was asphyxia caused by low oxygen levels. The family’s lawyer suggested that Jamison must have lost consciousness when reaching for his dropped cell phone, which was found near the chamber. He was by himself at the training facility after hours and the San Antonio police department closed its investigation saying his death was accidental. But concerns still loomed.
Cryotherapy chambers use nitrogen to cool the air inside to temperatures as low as -265 degrees Fahrenheit and are thought to boost the immune system and reduce inflammation — but they’re not regulated by the FDA or approved to treat any condition. After a state investigation into the accident, Federal and Sim officials have created guidelines for use of the machines by Sim League players.
It is believed that Jamison had been in the chamber for more than 15-20 minutes when he collapsed. Dr. Tracey Green, the Sim Leagues chief medical officer, told the Sim League Gazette on Friday the recommendations state that cryotherapy chambers be limited to one 3-minute session per day and should have their blood pressure taken before and after by medical team staffs. Additionally, cryotherapy centers should have emergency kits and defibrillators on site, nitrogen monitors in treatment rooms, and signs and waivers that clearly explain the risks involved in cryotherapy and that it has not been proven to treat illnesses.
The health department will work with Sim League officials, coaches and training staffs to make sure they’re meeting the Federal “expected standards” but these recommendations don’t amount to law and there are no penalties for not following them. For now, the league isn’t pursuing any further regulations, but Dr. Green told the AP that she urges people to talk to their team doctors before undergoing a deep freeze.

Official statement from the San Antonio Spurs organization:
"Jesse was a bright young man with loads of potential, both on and off the court. His teammates loved him, and it was always a joy when he'd bring his three-year-old daughter, Jenna, to practices.
We were excited to turn the reins over to Jesse and allow him to usher in the next era of Spurs dominance. His tremendous ability allowed us to make the difficult decision to trade another Spur and future Hall of Famer in Lonzo Ball to a division rival.
With Jesse manning the point, we were confident that the Spurs would contend for their third championship in the past nine years.
While we want to do nothing to take away from the ongoing mourning from the Spurs and TMBSL as a whole on Jesse's behalf, we would like to say that no one in the Spurs organization was contacted in response to this tragic incident. This is muckraking journalism at best, and, at worst, will tarnish the reputation of the Spurs' organization and, indeed, the league as a whole.
Spurs General Manager TimPig, widely considered the general manager not only with the greatest concern for his players and organization, but also the best at scouting talent and assembling a championship squad, would like to formally denounce the Sim League Gazette and their slanderous tactics. It is his recommendation that the entire Sim League Gazette's locker room and press box credentials are immediately revoked as this investigation continues.
The Spurs maintain a full-time internal crime investigation squad that has uncovered many more details about this incident that they are uncomfortable publicly sharing at this point. We assure you that once the internal investigation has concluded, a full statement will be released to the press and you will quickly see how the Gazette's efforts to be the first to report the story are in conflict with the facts.
Thank you."

What kind of culture problem does San Antonio have that it requires a full-time internal crime investigation squad?
These are the questions the people need answers to.
Come to Buffalo, where we have upstanding citizens who volunteer in the community and don't commit crimes.

Come to Buffalo, where we have upstanding citizens who volunteer in the community and don't commit crimes. There is nothing we are more concerned about than the well-being of our players. Consider the Spurs' reputation league-wide as a fantastic place to play. There's a reason everyone wants to come here, and having a full-time team dedicated to player safety is a big part of that.

Gazette... can you confirm the rumors that the asphyxiation was part of a self-induced sex act?
We've heard the Spurs are into that sort of thing.

Official update from the San Antonio Spurs on the untimely passing of Jesse Jamison:
"After a thorough internal investigation, the Spurs can confirm that Jesse Jamison died while jacking off in one of those stand-up cryotherapy chamber things that Phil Kessel did a funny video in the other day.
In an effort to prevent a similar tragedy from occurring in the future, we've posted signs discouraging players and fans from jacking off in severe conditions - either hot or cold - throughout the locker room, all team facilities, and AT&T Center.
Thank you."
