I wanted to try and come up with something that was somewhat original, hadn't been done before and that I felt interested me and the rest of the GM's. I understand that it of course has more interest to the 5 teams that I chose and people with draft picks this year but the plan is to do it again in the future depending on reception and trying to choose different teams.
Basically this is my perception of how these picks went and what I thought of the draft they had immediately after a draft and without knowing what happens in TC. Each of these teams had multiple first round selections.
1.1- John Wall PG 6'4'' 195 19 B C+ B B- C A
1.14- Al-Farouq Aminu SF 6'9'' 215 20 B- C C- B- C+ A
1.24 Jarvis Varnado PF 6'9'' 210 22 C+ D C- B+ B C
The Jazz were able to jump up in the draft and win the John Wall sweepstakes. While his first pick left little surprise or wait the Jazz still had two other first rounder’s to add some intrigue to the easiest pick in the draft.
I think the perception of Wall is that he will easily be one of the best PG’s in the league and possibly one day even become the best PG. It was a safe and easy pick and I know 2poor is excited about the chance to have Wall as a member of the Jazz.
Theres not much more to say other than congrats.
Aminu is a tough prospect to gauge, very easy chance that he can be a fantastic player, but right now my money is on a solid role guy. 2poors plans for Aminu like most players selected in that mid-teens range will vary based on TC and where he gets his bumps or possibly loses a grade or two. Looking ahead and seeing that 2poor grabbed Varnado at 24 I am surprised Scoonie wasn't the pick here. Although why grab Scoonie when you can get the same guy possibly better 10 picks later.
Varnado in my opinion was a fantastic pick at 1.24, even with the C potential I am surprised he didn't go a little higher. Seems to be that prototypical sim league big man, which almost everyone is clamoring over. Will be able to grab some boards and possibly block a couple shots but never be a scorer.
Draft Grade- A- I dont really give a damn who he picked after 1.1, he could have bombed those picks and took the worst players possible and he would have gotten an A. Well probably not but to get Wall who I think is going to be a fantastic player and pair them with guys that make sense give him a very good draft.
1.5- Paul George SF 6'8" 210 19 C+ B- C B- C A
1.16- Gordon Hayward SG 6'6'' 207 20 C+ B C C+ C B
The Cavs like many others took a fall back one spot in the draft, looking like they would get one of the mid-tier lotto picks. However due to the surprising move by mj and the Magic, the Cavs were lucky to get the no brainer decision at 5 to grab double first name with a fucked irl leg Paul George.
While George seemed to be a solid to great pick at 5 drafted as a SF, it gets even better when moved to SG and gets an unexpected +2 bump in defense. One GM said it best that George seems to be the steal of the draft but without a TC being done yet only time will tell.
I can say that I was ecstatic to have George fall to me on draft day, and after getting that bump in D I am pretty pleased with that selection.
11 picks later the Cavs were able to grab wing man Gordon Hayward, another player that I am surprised lasted as long as he did. You can say that about a lot of guys in this draft due to its depth. Hayward is a lot like Jordan Crawford that I think most expect them to be in that Piatkowski mold of a scorer but not playing much defense. Surprisingly Hayward did receive a bump up to B- in defense moving over the SF position causing GM H/T to flip flop the positions of his two first round picks.
Draft Grade- B+ The Cavs had a really strong draft in my bias opinion but that was more due to who fell to them at 5 and that I may be overvaluing Hayward. I could see this grade being a little better but still a notch below the Jazz.
1.4-Greg Monroe PF 6'11'' 253 20 B- C C+ C+ B- A
1.21- Elliot Williams SG 6'4'' 180 21 B- C+ C B C- B
1.25-Patrick Patterson PF 6'9'' 232 21 B- C C C+ C+ B
The Magic are the franchise that seems to have the worst luck at the moment. It also seems to have plenty of empathy from other GM’s in the league when you see comments that other GM’s are hoping his controversial first round pick booms and doesn't bust, this includes many GM’s in the Eastern Conference as well.
Greg Monroe is the first controversial pick of the draft, and not someone I would have taken at 4 as I would have gone with George. With that said, I don’t necessarily thank it’s a horrible pick like I have seen others post. Monroe has decent size and pretty damn good starting grades. I think that mj will be just fine and after the initial reaction, I feel like most other gm’s are thinking the same thing.
Elliott Williams at 1.21 is an awesome get for mj and really where I think you start to take notice with what mj was able to do with this draft after grabbing Monroe. If you look at Williams vs George from a grades when they were drafted standpoint there isn't much separation. Of course I don’t think Williams has the same potential it just shows that a lot of other gm’s overlooked what I think will be a solid starter in a few years.
Patterson was also another good pick in my mind with great starting grades and has that irl name recognition that I think can matter at times. Patterson is one of those that we will have a better idea about after TC as we have all seen a guy with his grades blow up and look great or drop ina few categories and all of a sudden looks like tanker fodder.
Bonus for the Magic was getting Damion James at 2.1, excellent draft mj and I commend you for that.
Draft Grade- B I still believe that the Magic should have taken George at 4, and that he will be the better player. However as a whole this was one of the better drafts that a gm could have put together and while the 4th pick was the wrong one in my opinion, grabbing Williams late was the best choice possible. Had he taken George and I taken Monroe I would have reversed these grades between the Magic and the Cavs.
1.2- DeMarcus Cousins C 6'11'' 270 19 B C- D+ B- B A
1.15- Scoonie Saperstein C 6'11'' 273 18 C+ D D- B B- A
1.22- Greivis Vasquez PG 6'6'' 208 23 C+ B B C+ C- C
1.28- Dominique Jones SG 6'5'' 213 21 B- C+ C C+ C A
The Thunder were the lucky sons of bitches in this year’s draft jumping up to number two and taking Cousins. I think that JHB has gotten a lot ofshit in 4.0 and most of it deserved for his shit talking coming out of the gates but he seems to have made some solid moves so far. Strange to see a guy who seemingly hates draft picks have 4 in one draft but luck has him looking like a genius in his rebuild so far.
Cousins was like Wall an obvious and easy pick. While there was a lot of discussion that Boogie could go number 1, which was just pre-draft discussion and nothing more than bullshit. Boogie is an excellent pick and will be an excellent player in his rookie year and on.
Scoonie at 15 is what seems to be the Thunders choice at replacing somewhat recently traded and overpaid Rich Kelley. Scoonie has great starting grades and size being able to add an inch and a ton of weight, I think it’s safe to say he will be this draft classes Eaton.
Greivis was easily one of my most hated players during his days at UMD but he was a solid college guy. I was looking at him with my 2.3 pick but of course he didn’t fall that fare. I think in a draft where Odin has made a comment that there weren’t many or any PG’s that Greivis may be a diamond in the rough, I think it was a pretty good pick and the only other choice I would have probably gone with would have been Udoh but after the Thunder getting Scoonie, there probably wasn’t a reason for them to take Udoh.
Dominique Jones is just a late first rounder, I don’t expect much from him, he has solid grades but so does half of this draft. Basically the same I have felt about Patterson for mj that it was a good pick for what JHB is doing and has the chance to blow up but more than likely stays around where he is.
Draft Grade- B I think that the Thunder had a pretty solid draft. Boogie and Scoonie seem to be really good picks and will work well together int he lineup but I am not sold on Vasquez or Jones becoming much. Of course I may be wrong but I don't see them being too much more than filler.
1.8- Lance Stephenson SG 6'5'' 210 19 B- C C C+ C A
1.13- Cole Aldrich C 6'11'' 245 22 B- C- D B- B- B
1.18- Trevor Booker PF 6'8'' 237 22 B- D+ C- B- B- B
1.29- Landry Fields SF 6'7'' 210 21 C+ C+ C+ C+ C+ B
Tyler is a strange bird but somehow even when everyone questions him, things work out. I guess it makes sense when you are the commish. (I kid, I kid) Tyler has made some interesting choices but none that I want to crucify him over.
Stephenson is a weird pick at 8 over Crawford, Sanders and Davis but I too believe he will blow up and that somehow he will be one of the better draft picks. His grades were hard to see knowing what he can do irl but they were the correct grades for coming into the league and I too would take the risk on him had there been no one else I liked either.
At first I can say the same about Aldrich as was said about Stephenson. Strange pick and to be honest unexpected, however once I looked at the file more it seemed like a decent selection even if it was made because he likes the Jayhawks. Aldrich basically has the same grades as Davis with better size at the moment. I think Davis has more potential to become a good player but I see Aldrich as someone with the base to become a pretty solid guy.
When analyzing that 1.18 pick all I have to say is fuck you Tyler, fuck you man.
Landry Fields was a solid end of the first round selection, a bankz special and someone who has the same chances as the others to rise up and surprise the rest of the gm’s in the league. However I would question Tyler over why he took Fields over James or even Babbit.
Draft Grade- C+ Even though I can come up with pretty solid reasoning that he made good choices, I still feel like it was a pretty average draft for the Pistons. I think that Crawford, Scoonie, Booker and James would have been better selections. The good thing is that this is just my perception and I may and am likely to be completely wrong.
Basically this is my perception of how these picks went and what I thought of the draft they had immediately after a draft and without knowing what happens in TC. Each of these teams had multiple first round selections.
1.1- John Wall PG 6'4'' 195 19 B C+ B B- C A
