Hey folks, welcome to the sim/college football roundtable. I'd like to thank Scat, Trofie, Devine, and HT for participating.
*some of these answers came before Scat scatted all over the league with the lotto and Khalid/Edge signings.
1. Which middle of the pack playoff team is poised to join the ranks of the elite? Which contender is in trouble/closest to falling off?
I can see the Bucks being the class of the East very soon as I think highly of Trofie as a GM. The Mavs are my pick to go through a falling off period. Not saying he won’t continue to be elite, because I believe he will but it will require some roster reconstruction.
Teams that are about to fall hard, Hawks(obviously), Heat(if they don't retain reeves), and thats about it. I feel the West is more status quo as you have the same teams that will be good with not much emergence from the young teams yet.
Not sure what bruns is doing but i think the bulls are poised to fall off soon because of the contracts they have. his stars are also getting old. he has his pick back now so maybe hes trying to tank idk. i think that the thunder have enough young talent that pretty soon here they are going to be legit contenders.
This is a tough question since we are at the end of the offseason during a time that a lot of GM's try and make a bunch of moves. I think the Heat have had some pretty decent teams as of late, and even with an aging Lanier and Truck they dont really impress me that much at the moment.I will also say that Dump and the cletics have about 1 year maybe 2 with the current talent he has to try and get that championship.
Middle of the pack playoff team that will become a contender will have to be the Nets in my opinion. Scat had a good offseason and he is getting a lot of talent on that team. Not at that point this instant but I think they are the closest.
The Bucks and Sixers look like they're going to make the leap. I like the Buse deal, and Fason did a nice job getting Brian Grant on a more reasonable deal. The Pacers are in rough shape. Old roster + no picks is a bad combo. They should probably tear it down and move those vets for picks.
2. Other than the Moses and Neon deals (sorry, scat), which trade was the worst in recent memory?
When I find the time I am going to have to do an article with all the offers I received because all the offers were close in value with none blowing me away. Can only see the argument in saying I should have kept them. But after landing the [HASH]1 pick and the [HASH]11 due to the trade and allowing for an immediate rebuild than being stuck in [HASH]5-8 range in the East playoff picture it will begin a new era.
Probably bowie and 3 firsts for Grunfeld. Just bad on a lot of levels. It ended up being Bowie and 3 firsts for Dick Mumma.
me giving up what turned out to be 1.8 and 1.9 for billy knight and some other scrub, to dirt and trofie
every deal that RW did at the end of last season to try and go all in but only screwed up his roster and cap. Taking Paultz was idiotic.
The Paultz deal. I get why RW made those moves, but they didn't work out for him and now he's stuck with that terrible deal.
3. Speaking of bad moves, name the worst trade, signing, and draft pick you've ever made. On the flip side, give us your best trade, signing, and pick (top overall pick excluded). It doesn't have to be 4.0, either. Go way back to 1.0 if you want to.
My worst trade would be my Webber for Shaq trade. I panicked thinking I was going to lose Shaq in FA so I dealt him for the [HASH]1 pick in the previous year who had just signed a max deal. Webber was a max worthy player but in retrospect never on the level Shaq was. Can’t really remember any bad signings as I tend to be cautious in my offers rather relaying on my patented scat luck.
My best signing was stealing Tracy McGrady away from Ian. McGrady was able to lead me to a finals win, the only one considered lucky in league history because I won it. My best pick would be all the times I lucked into lotto wins but my pick of Johnny High a commish special in year one of 4.0 was solid. Hoping Childress is a bigger commish special after this draft.
I honestly don't have the memory some people do so I can't remember a horrible trade that i've made in the past although I'm sure there are plenty. If I do anything decent in this league I think it's making moves via trade. In 4.0 if you just look at it as "one deal" then probably when I traded Grant Hill. Although the domino's after that made my team decent.
Signing Probably Tom Henisohn (sp?) but I traded him away, had good grades but bad production.
Draft picks - I've made a shit load of terrible draft picks. Just horrible.
Best Trade , Either Eric Gordon from 2poor , 3 firsts for Cliff Robinson or Chris webber for David Robinson.
Best signing- I don't remember a time when I've stolen a premier player from someone
Best draft pick- Probably KG at [HASH]2. Or Mikki Moore in the 2nd round.
derick favors was a horrible pick but at the time i think it was the right one. he was the BPA. however, my trades are previously mentioned where i gave away 1.8 for knight and then 1.9 for i dont even remember who turned out to be pretty terrible. I could have had emeka okafor, man. My best trade was 1.3 to 1.5 with heel. i got the same guy i was going to get with 1.3 and got two picks out of it. my best signing was probably lucas i havent had too many signings though.
I cant even name all of my bad decisions. I am going to make it easy on me and say all of them in 2.0.
My best trade was back in 1.0 or the beginning of 2.0 with Bankz that got me JO and a title. Dont know if there is a best signing because thats typically luck so every time I have gotten a max worthy player in FA is a great signing for me. My best draft pick is probably either Battier in 2.0 or maybe George in 4.0 depending how he continues to grow.
I've made more bad moves than good. My worst trade was probably moving 1.8 in the '01 draft for Soup's '02 pick. I didn't like my options at 1.8, so I took a chance on that '02 pick turning into something big. Then Soup did what Soup does, and that Mavs pick ended up in the 20's (I forfeited it). I haven't had too many signings, so I guess my worst one was Kermit. Worst pick was Jalen. I took him ahead of Reeves and Big Dog.
My best trade was getting Pistol for pretty much nothing. Best pick was Bledsoe at 1.7. I haven't had a good signing yet.
4. One of the toughest aspects of GM’ing is trying to figure out what to pay non-max players. How do you determine how much you’re willing to pay? Are there certain positions you wont pay big money for?
I will be honest that I am probably the worst GM to ask this question to. I haven’t made any memorable signings nor really over paid for any. I am extremely cautious in FA unless there are max guys or am a guy away from competing in which I will over pay. I prefer the cautious approach as I normally only look my roster and am rarely in shout so am unsure who the non-max players to sign are.
I like to maintain flexibility with Cap. I will max anyone regardless of who I have if I feel they should get one. Non max players, I usually try and snag on a 1 year deal for like 11 mil. But will obviously go over that for some guys. I Try and hit my 50 mil on the dot.
I always look at what their previous contracts were, if they offered to resign and how much they wanted (if a gm turned him down for 10 million a year, im not going to offer him 10 million), and their age. I would prefer to pay big money for small forwards.
I look at previous contracts, comparable players' contracts, and FA preview articles. Then I freestyle and hope for the best.
5. To piggyback off that last question, which attributes do you value most in a player? Least? What are some red flags to watch out for? This is particularly helpful to less experienced GMs.
I tend to like an A or better defense grade and am big on inside offense though I have begun to shift to outside focus as I learn more from other GM’s. I don’t really have any big red flags as I have little to no knowledge of the happenings of the sim.
pg's- I like bigger pg's who can score- I don't give a shit if they turn it over .4 times more than "average"
sg's- Jumper- Don't care about rebounding grades obviously.
sf- Sf's who can reb - Guys who can't rebound
Pf- Well rounded player who can do it all - Shoots like shit and doesn't block shots
C- Plays D and blocks shots. - Shoots like shit and doesn't block shots.
I value defense. I hate when my sg or something scores 20 but gives up 28. im looking at you 2.0 chalky studebaker. I would watch out for handles.
I overvalue trying to combine elite scoring and defense rather than accepting that a 30 ppg player with B defense is worth having and a good player. I also have a hard time distinguishing that a 13rpg with 4blocks big man is better than one that scores 20 and only grabs 10 boards with 1 block.
I'm still figuring this out. I look for defense and rebounding in big men, and a B+ or better outside in perimeter players. Canes showed me some things to look out for in 2.0 as far as shooting percentages, so that's helped me as well. I also look at what attributes other GMs pump points into and factor that in when upgrading my own players.
Now the fun stuff....
6. What are your thoughts on the NCAA paying players?
I am opposed to the NCAA paying players any money. From my experience as an equipment manager at UF I can tell you that all athletes are financially well supported whether it be through NCAA approved items or those which fall into the grey area of the rules. Now I wouldn’t be opposed to student athletes being able to capitalize on their jersey sales as I compare that to a student profiting from research they completed.
Fuck them, they get a free education and allowances. If they could manage their $ this wouldn't be an issue.
dumbest thing ever. come on, these kids are getting their tuition paid for, free food, free travel, tons of equipment, clothes, etc. they are also taking easy classes and have tutors that pretty much ensure they arent going to fail unless they try. these guys are way more privileged than 90% of college students. does a second string linebacker for akron really need to make money? how would you determine how much everyone makes. none of these kids are going hungry. hell most of the football players i see on campus are driving around nice cars. crying that they dont make money is hilarious.
Im not really sure as I havent truly looked into it. If the players get a stipend of some sort that paid them close to maybe 9 or 10 dollars an hour working 40 hours a week I would be okay with that I think.
The potential domino effect worries me. My biggest concern is that smaller schools won't be able to keep up and end up shutting down their programs, which would limit the opportunities for guys from tougher backgrounds to get an education. On top of that, I have no idea how they'd determine what to pay players. Do you pay them all the same wage? Is that really fair to star players? Do you allow stars to make up the difference with endorsements? Too many questions that I'm not sure there are answers to right now.
7. Tell us about your team this year. Talk about your toughest games, your best players on each side of the ball, a breakout player to watch, and give us your W-L prediction.
As a Florida State fan I see a repeat of last season with an undefeated regular season. I don’t expect the same level of domination on the scoreboard as opponents will bring their A game facing the previous National Champions. Once in the playoff anything could happen but still believe we have the talent to repeat as champions. Our toughest games will be Oklahoma State at Jerry World to begin the season and the final game against UF. Rivalry games are always difficult and I expect improvement with the Roper lead offense. On offense breakout players to watch are Mario Pender and Dalvin Cook in the backfield. Both bring big play ability to an already loaded offensive unit. On defense a breakout player to watch is Trey Marshall a true freshman DB who from all early reports in camp has him excelling.
W-L Predication: 15-0 (beating Oregon in the championship)
Nebraska- Toughest games Wisconsin, Mich st, Miami, Fresno
Best player on offense is Ameer , he would be a legit heisman threat if we had a team worth a fuck and a head coach who didn't think
Defense- Randy Gregory , Projected top 5 pick. Is like Jason Pierre Paul
Breakout player- Vincent Valentine DL- think he has a huge year
Record 7-5 regular season 8-5 total
God we are going to suck so bad. 4-8 if we are lucky. our toughest game is obviously going to be at bama and that is going to be a bloodbath. Clint trickett is our starting qb thats all i gotta say about that. Not even sure we will beat our 1-AA opponent, as we suck and it will be a week after the letdown at bama. on offense, our best players are our RB's. We have Rushel Shell from pitt and Wendell Smallwood. Both have the capabilities of being big time RB's but our o-line is probably going to be so bad that it wont matter (see: charles sims from last year). On defense, watch out for safety Karl Joseph. Hes going to be a junior and hes a stud. Hes a ballhawk and a huge hard hitter. Kids a stud. other than that most of our players suck
Ha I want to say we suck but Ill go into more depth.
Before Saturday my opinion would be that we would go 11-1 or 10-2, after Saturday I think the ceiling is 10-2 and the floor is 8-4 but most realistically we will fall right in the middle at 9-3. Toughest games are UGA, FSU and SCAR by far.
Defense is a strength for us and they showe dthat for 3 quarters saturday, best players on that side are Vic Beasley, Grady Jarrett, Stephone Anthony. Breakout player will be Mackensie Alexander.
Offense is young and was pretty brutal after halftime on Saturday. Breakout player has to be Deshaun Watson I think and best players would be the injured Charone Peak, Jordan leggett, and which ever young reciever can put it all together. We have talent on the roster but Dabo likes to play the seniors and guys he feels deserves it, so it will be frustrating seeing Cole starting most of the year and DJ Howard at running back.
This is a make or break year for Al Golden at Miami imo. There's a lot of skill position talent on this team, led by Duke Johnson, one of the best running backs in the country. Stacy Coley came on late as a freshman last year and has the talent to be one of the best receivers in the country, so look out for him. The biggest question marks are an inexperienced QB, the right side of the OL, and the defense. The whole damn defense.
The defense has been a mess since Golden and D'Onofrio got here. Miami defenses shouldn't ranked in the 100s three straight years. Another bad year on that side and both of these guys can get fucked.
I'll go with 7-5 with losses to Louisville, Nebraska, FSU, VT, and UNC. We have enough talent to win the Coastal, but I think the defense will hold us back yet again. I hope I'm wrong, though.
8. Which top 10 team is ranked too high? Which team outside the top 10 has the best chance to emerge as a serious contender and potentially challenge for a playoff spot? Barring injuries of course.
I think Ohio State will certainly be ranked in the low 20's following the loss of Braxton Miller for the season. Another is South Carolina, they benefitted from the ESPN SEC hype machine to be ranked in the top 10. I expect Texas to surprise some people under the Charlie Strong regime. I am a big fan of him from observing his work and enthusiasm for coaching while at UF. I believe he will have them in the top 5 to finish the season.
Ranked too high- ohio st, lost miller . Oklahoma , I just don't see them doing shit this year
Someone who could emerge imo would be Louisville , Texas, Wisconsin
south carolina being in the top 10 was pretty funny, i already saw the game though so i cant go with them. i would say ucla is probably too high, i dont see them being a top 10 team but its still way too early to say. I think A&M (after watching last night) and LSU could both be top 10 teams this year. A&M looked great and LSU always has a good squad so i could see them moving their way up.
Inside the top 10- Has to be South Carolina, I would have said that before Thursday. they like Clemson just lot a lot of valuable players.
Outside the top 10- Gotta say Georgia as long as their secondary improves. A rb stable like what they have and a defense that could be very good at the end of the year may set them up for a solid run.
SOUTH CAROLINA. But for real, I would've picked Bama before Thursday's game. QB is a major question mark imo. I think they'll lose 2 or 3 games this year. I think A&M and USC have the best chances to get up there and challenge for a playoff spot, mainly because they'll get more opportunities to play and beat ranked teams than the teams ranked around them. I don't think either one will get there, though.
9. Speaking of the playoffs, what are your thoughts on the new system? Would you like to see it expanded? If so, to how many teams?
I’m a traditionalist thus am opposed to the new playoff system. Under the system in place I do agree with it being limited to 4 teams so loses will still have a similar affect as they did under the BCS system. If it expanded to 8 teams I believe loses would lose the sting for those teams ranked highly.
I like it, yes I'd expand to 6. Give the top dogs a bye.
Its awesome. 4 teams for right now is perfect IMO. Just wait and see how it works out first before we start tweaking it. Seeing like Ohio State play alabama to make the National championship would be so awesome. We are going to get 3 badass games from it instead of 1 awesome game and a bunch of BCS games that really didnt mean a whole lot. I do think this will make it harder for a less than powerhouse to win it all though as now they will have to be a top 4 team and win 2 big games instead of just one.
I think its better than the BCS but I would have rather we gone to 8 teams. I would be fine going to 12 or 16 and taking a game off the schedule to see more playoff games and the chance for more Cinderella stories.
I like a lot more than the BCS. Four teams is fine for now, but I wouldn't mind seeing six with the top two getting byes in the near future. Eight would be the limit. Anything more and it starts getting watered down.

'04: [HASH]1 USC (12-0) vs [HASH]4 Utah (12-0)
[HASH]2 Oklahoma (12-0) vs [HASH]3 Auburn (12-0)
Pick: USC Defeats Oklahoma
i dont remember much about this far back, but im taking USC
'05: [HASH]1 USC (12-0) vs [HASH]4 Ohio State (9-2)
[HASH]2 Texas (12-0) vs [HASH]3 Penn St (10-1)
Pick: texas defeats USC: This is easy. Leinart bush and VY. God this was an awesome year. these 2 teams were far better than anyone else, would have sucked if a playoff somehow ruined the GOAT national championship game.
'06: [HASH]1 Ohio St (12-0) vs [HASH]4 LSU (10-2)
[HASH]2 Florida (12-1) [HASH]3 Michigan (11-1)
Pick: Florida Beats LSU
'07: [HASH]1 Ohio State (11-1) vs [HASH]4 Oklahoma (11-2)
[HASH]2 LSU (11-2) vs [HASH]3 VT (11-2)
Pick: LSU beats Ohio State. Oklahoma was exposed and demolished by wvu in the BCS bowl. VT sucks.
'08: [HASH]1 Oklahoma (12-1) vs [HASH]4 Alabama (12-1)
[HASH]2 Florida (12-1) vs [HASH]3 Texas (11-1)
Pick: Texas beats alabama
'09: [HASH]1 Alabama (12-0) vs [HASH]4 Boise (12-0)
[HASH]2 Texas (12-0) vs [HASH]3 Florida (11-1)

'10: [HASH]1 Auburn (13-0) vs [HASH]4 Stanford (11-1)
[HASH]2 Oregon (12-1) vs [HASH]3 TCU (12-1)
Pick: Auburn defeats Oregon. This would have been a boring playoff imo.
'11: [HASH]1 LSU (13-0) vs [HASH]4 Stanford (11-1)
[HASH]2 Alabama (11-1) vs [HASH]3 Oklahoma State (11-1)
Pick: Oklahoma state defeats LSU. Oklahoma state lost an emotional game at home, i think they had the best team that year and would have taken care of alabama and lsu. lsu's qb situation was so pathetic that im not even sure they would have gotten past stanford.
'12: [HASH]1 Notre Dame (12-0) vs [HASH]4 Oregon (11-1)
[HASH]2 Alabama (12-1) vs [HASH]3 Florida (11-1)
Pick: Alabama beats oregon. Notre dame was way overrated and should have lost at home to pitt. Obviously they deserved to be in the NC because they earned it but alabama destroyed them and you could tell they had 1000X more talent. Oregon would have been way too fast for them.
'13: [HASH]1 FSU (13-0) vs [HASH]4 Michigan State (11-1)
[HASH]2 Auburn (12-1) vs [HASH]3 Alabama (11-1)
Pick: FSU beats Alabama. It took a miracle for auburn to beat alabama at auburn. No way saban loses to them again. In the championship, Winston is just too good.
'04: [HASH]1 USC (12-0) vs [HASH]4 Utah (12-0)
[HASH]2 Oklahoma (12-0) vs [HASH]3 Auburn (12-0)
I think that Auburn would have knocked off USC that year and won it in the title game.
'05: [HASH]1 USC (12-0) vs [HASH]4 Ohio State (9-2)
[HASH]2 Texas (12-0) vs [HASH]3 Penn St (10-1)
A year that the BCS got it right I will say that it ends up the exact same way it did previously.
'06: [HASH]1 Ohio St (12-0) vs [HASH]4 LSU (10-2)
[HASH]2 Florida (12-1) [HASH]3 Michigan (11-1)
SEC goes 2-0 against the B1G in the playoffs and Florida beast LSU to win it all
'07: [HASH]1 Ohio State (11-1) vs [HASH]4 Oklahoma (11-2)
[HASH]2 LSU (11-2) vs [HASH]3 VT (11-2)
VT couldnt beat Kansas. OSU wins it all.
'08: [HASH]1 Oklahoma (12-1) vs [HASH]4 Alabama (12-1)
[HASH]2 Florida (12-1) vs [HASH]3 Texas (11-1)
Alabama caps off a great year beating UT.
'09: [HASH]1 Alabama (12-0) vs [HASH]4 Boise (12-0)
[HASH]2 Texas (12-0) vs [HASH]3 Florida (11-1)
Alabama beast Texas to win 2 straight
'10: [HASH]1 Auburn (13-0) vs [HASH]4 Stanford (11-1)
[HASH]2 Oregon (12-1) vs [HASH]3 TCU (12-1)
Another same game as before matchup with Auburn winning once again.
'11: [HASH]1 LSU (13-0) vs [HASH]4 Stanford (11-1)
[HASH]2 Alabama (11-1) vs [HASH]3 Oklahoma State (11-1)
OKST shocks everyone and wins the title against LSU
'12: [HASH]1 Notre Dame (12-0) vs [HASH]4 Oregon (11-1)
[HASH]2 Alabama (12-1) vs [HASH]3 Florida (11-1)
Oregon beats Alabama to win the title.
'13: [HASH]1 FSU (13-0) vs [HASH]4 Michigan State (11-1)
[HASH]2 Auburn (12-1) vs [HASH]3 Alabama (11-1)
I think if Bama and Auburn played again Bama would have won but FSU still wins the title.
'04: [HASH]1 USC (12-0) vs [HASH]4 Utah (12-0)
[HASH]2 Oklahoma (12-0) vs [HASH]3 Auburn (12-0)
Pick: USC. Too many weapons on that team.
'05: [HASH]1 USC (12-0) vs [HASH]4 Ohio State (9-2)
[HASH]2 Texas (12-0) vs [HASH]3 Penn St (10-1)
Pick: Texas. Hard to go against VY here.
'06: [HASH]1 Ohio St (12-0) vs [HASH]4 LSU (10-2)
[HASH]2 Florida (12-1) [HASH]3 Michigan (11-1)
Pick: Florida. We saw what their speed did to Ohio State. They would've done the same thing to Michigan.
'07: [HASH]1 Ohio State (11-1) vs [HASH]4 Oklahoma (11-2)
[HASH]2 LSU (11-2) vs [HASH]3 VT (11-2)
Pick: LSU. Same reasons as '06.
'08: [HASH]1 Oklahoma (12-1) vs [HASH]4 Alabama (12-1)
[HASH]2 Florida (12-1) vs [HASH]3 Texas (11-1)
Pick: Florida. Hard to go against Tebow and Percy here. Fuck them, though.
'09: [HASH]1 Alabama (12-0) vs [HASH]4 Boise (12-0)
[HASH]2 Texas (12-0) vs [HASH]3 Florida (11-1)
Pick: Bama wins the rematch.
'10: [HASH]1 Auburn (13-0) vs [HASH]4 Stanford (11-1)
[HASH]2 Oregon (12-1) vs [HASH]3 TCU (12-1)
Pick: Auburn. Oregon wins without a retard at QB.
'11: [HASH]1 LSU (13-0) vs [HASH]4 Stanford (11-1)
[HASH]2 Alabama (11-1) vs [HASH]3 Oklahoma State (11-1)
Pick: Bama. LSU wins without a retard at QB.
'12: [HASH]1 Notre Dame (12-0) vs [HASH]4 Oregon (11-1)
[HASH]2 Alabama (12-1) vs [HASH]3 Florida (11-1)
Pick: Bama. I think Oregon's speed would've given ND a lot of problems.
'13: [HASH]1 FSU (13-0) vs [HASH]4 Michigan State (11-1)
[HASH]2 Auburn (12-1) vs [HASH]3 Alabama (11-1)
Pick: Bama. They win the Iron Bowl rematch and edge FSU in the title game.
Top 4 matchup (of my lifetime)
[HASH]1 '01 Miami vs [HASH]4 '05 Texas
[HASH]2 '95 Nebraska vs. [HASH]3 '04 USC
Pick: '01 Miami. Too much offensive talent. Speed at LB (Vilma, DJ Williams) keep Frazier in check.
Thanks for reading, folks. I'd love to hear other people's picks.

Pick: Texas beats Alabama, Colt Mccoy doesnt get hurt.

'04: [HASH]1 USC (12-0) vs [HASH]4 Utah (12-0)
[HASH]2 Oklahoma (12-0) vs [HASH]3 Auburn (12-0)

[HASH]2 Florida (12-1) [HASH]3 Michigan (11-1)
Pick: Florida. We saw what their speed did to Ohio State. They would've done the same thing to Michigan.
'07: [HASH]1 Ohio State (11-1) vs [HASH]4 Oklahoma (11-2)
[HASH]2 LSU (11-2) vs [HASH]3 VT (11-2)

[HASH]2 Alabama (12-1) vs [HASH]3 Florida (11-1)
Pick: Bama. I think Oregon's speed would've given ND a lot of problems.
'13: [HASH]1 FSU (13-0) vs [HASH]4 Michigan State (11-1)
[HASH]2 Auburn (12-1) vs [HASH]3 Alabama (11-1)
Pick: Bama. They win the Iron Bowl rematch and edge FSU in the title game.
Top 4 matchup (of my lifetime)
[HASH]1 '01 Miami vs [HASH]4 '05 Texas
[HASH]2 '95 Nebraska vs. [HASH]3 '04 USC
Pick: '01 Miami. Too much offensive talent. Speed at LB (Vilma, DJ Williams) keep Frazier in check.
Thanks for reading, folks. I'd love to hear other people's picks.
