*didn't include resignings
10. John Lucas
Year: 3004
Team: Magic
Contract: $24,000,000 over 3 years
Overview: GM M. Jay was tired of sitting in mediocrity, so he decided to go all in for free agency with his plethora of cap space. After striking out day 1-2, Jay flipped the script selling off all the team's assets in attempt to start over for the ever rebuilding Magic. Only problem was that no one in the front office called to rescind the offer to Lucas. With a barren roster except for Lucas, Orlando decided to buy out the journeyman PG leaving him on the streets for the remainder of the 3004 season.
9. Al Skinner
Year: 3004
Team: Rockets
Contract: $75,000,000 over 5 years
Overview: Fresh off a mini rebuild the Houston Rockets entered free agency with tons of cap space and full intentions of signing one of the top free agents that off season in PG Al Skinner. The team reached an agreement with the talented guard, however no other free agents decided to follow suite. After a less than stellar year of 31-51, Skinner was moved to Seattle in a salary dump, and Houston continued it's tanking ways.
8. Caldwell Jones
Year: 3002
Team: Bulls
Contract: $74,821,041 over 6 years
Overview: When GM Brian Bruns and the Chicago Bulls signed PF/C Caldwell Jones away from the Utah Jazz in 3002, the future appeared bright for they windy city team. Early on it seemed that the Bulls had found their missing piece in Jones leading the team to several division titles and playoff appearances. With so much money tied into their front court, it caused Chicago to neglect their back court and eventually forced Bruns to make a decision and send Jones packing.
7. Butch McRae
Year: 3006
Team: Nuggets
Contract: $60,000,000 over 6 years
Overview: Fresh on his 3rd stint in TMBSL 4.0, GM Bankz faced tough decisions right away headed into the off season and deciding on which way to lead his franchise. Bankz has history with signing controversial free agents deals (ie Richard Washington), but has shown that often his gambles pay off. In a market flooded with good pg's, the Nuggets gamble didn't pay off as it turns out Bankz was bidding against himself. To make things worse, desperation set in as Denver moved two of its younger cornerstone players to LA for aging PF Bob Mcadoo and a couple of projected late round firsts.
6. Bill Robinzine
Year: 3004
Team: Knicks
Contract: $55,692,000 over 4 years
Overview: Simply put, no one knows what the fuck GM Blankcheck Skrouse was doing when he signed SF Bill Robinzine to a multi year, 8 figure contract. As projected the contract was a disaster and he was shipped West in a deal for Artis Gilmore. Robinzine was later traded to Golden State where he was bought out. Today, you can find ol Bill being passed from team to team as a money matching expiring.
5. Dan Roundfield
Year: 3002
Team: Warriors
Contract: $81,622,954 over 6 years
Overview: SG/SF Dan Roundfield was a very good player in this league until GM Devine panicked in days 3-4 of free agency and offered a contract that almost completely killed his value. Despite being overpaid, Roundfield has had two very good runs with both the Oklahoma City Thunder and now the Orlando Magic.
4. Billy Knight
Year: 3001
Team: Rockets
Contract: $93,750,000 over 6 years
Overview: SG Billy Knight is the second creation Timberwolves player on this list. After a good individual year and a very successful Minnesota run that season, other teams looked to free agency in hopes to lure away players form the talented roster. Knight appeared to benefit the most from the greed of other GMs landing a max contract with the divisional rival Houston Rockets. Although very solid offensively for all of his career, Knight was never able to take that next step and become a perennial all star player that was expected with this contract. Tensions are still high between GMs Buster and Dilworth according to GM of the Rockets after the controversial signing of Knight. GM Buster was unavailable for comment.
3. Darryl Dawkins
Year: 3002
Team: Bulls
Contract: $93,750,000 over 6 years
Overview: Darryl Dawkins had the makings to be the next great Center in TMBSL history. Only signed to a one year deal during the creation draft, teams had to gamble on whether or not they projected that Dawkins would eventually become that player and offer him a max contract at only 20 years old. The pressure of that massive contract took its toll on Darryl and led to off court problems of drugs and prostitutes. As Dawkins has grown to the age of 25, he appears to have those days behind him and is proving he can still be an integral part of a championship team.
2. Mitch Kupchak
Year: 3001
Team: Suns
Contract: $93,750,000 over 6 years
Overview: From the moment that Mitch Kupchak was signed to a max contract, GM Ankly began counting down the years until he would be able to buyout the big man. If not for [HASH]1 on this list, Kupchak would be far and away the worst contract in league history. Mitch had neither the grades or the stats to justify this contract offer at the moment of this signing. Finally 3 years later, Ankly was able to accomplish his mission and buy out his first of many bad moves in 4.0
1. Billy Paultz
Year: 3003
Team: Hornets
Contract: $120,312,500 over 7 years
Overview:
Top 10 Free Agent Blunders
10. John Lucas
Year: 3004
Team: Magic
