Round Table Discussion
1. It appears that sim league is having a hard time finding interested gms. What's one thing you think the league could do to remedy that?
Outside of the initial 1.0 and 2.0 launch where we either stumbled on or lucked out with getting a ton of active people, finding and retaining newbies have always been hard, but part of the reason is probably the teams they're taking over are left in shambles (hence why we were looking for new replacements to begin with). Maybe do what Odin did with the Knicks last year and allow the commish to fix up a few things with a CompuTeam first instead of just throwing a rookie GM in a shit hole of a situation.
Tough to say. I think the new GMs we've got could turn out to be active/interested, but it takes a little while to pick up the rhythm of the league. As a relatively new member myself, I know things didn't really start clicking for me until the middle of the second season I was in the league. I do think that we're running low on TMB references and should probably expand the search beyond just TMB members in the future.
No need to change anything. Just keep asking. I wanted to be a GM for months and we had no openings. When you need GM's you can't find them... when you don't there is a line. Just be patient and keep asking away.
As much as I hate to do it, it may be time to aim our focus outside of TMB to find GMs. There are tons of forums for leagues like ours, or even some of the current GMs have friends that expressed interest. Dirt and Bruns came into the league in this fashion and have been active and in for the long haul.
2. Write a brief wanted ad for TMBSL.
Hate Asians? Like fake sports? Come join our tight knit group of standoffish GMs that fear change and sometime talk ebola outbreaks.
Hey you! Do you like basketball? Do you like fantasy sports? Do you enjoy several grown men arguing with each other over super-trivial stuff? Well, if you've ever wanted to take those elements and combine them into something that has a tenuous tie to all three, you are in luck. We are currently seeking a new GM to fill the 29th (lol) spot in our sim league. You thought you wasted time before? Wait until you sit there refreshing an article waiting for that 8th vote or reading through a day's worth of shout posts.
Are you married? Have kids? Well I found the perfect distraction to keep you from blowing your brains out... Join TMBSL.
Do you like the Atlanta Hawks? Would you like to GM a fake NBA franchise? Spot opening soon.
3. In your opinion, what topic of TMBSL has you the most exhausted?
Wheel talk grinds my gears the most without a doubt.
I'm not really exhausted by anything in sim league currently. Some of the GM arguments can be really exhausting, but mainly because they always seem to spring up out of completely random stuff and seem escalated way more than they should be.
Dump... He is insufferable
Give it time and any topic in TMBSL becomes exhausting. We have a lot of guys that just love to argue for the sake of arguing so without fail you will always find GMs to take polar opposites of the topic and beat it to death.
4. Not including yourself(if applies) and you can could only save one GM from death, which Texas GM would you save from ebola and why?
Furk...
I would save Dump on the off chance that it means I could also save Melanie. Melanie would then fall for me, her dashing savior, and I would succeed where so many sim leaguers and TMBers have dreamed of going: nailing Dump's sister.
Soup would be the easy answer... But I would actually save Ian. He is TMBSL historian and he has commished the league before. Very important to the future of survival of tmbsl. Anyone can learn how to change shout colors imho....(editors note: bankz had to call someone and pay them $150 to snake his drain)
I'd have to choose Dirt here. Not only is he one of my bestfriends, but I would also need someone to look after my beagle Gabby. The other two Texas gms would either saw her leg off or eat her for dinner.
5. It appears that RW is tanking to help improve his team's pick that currently belongs to the Houston Rockets. What are your thoughts on this? Should anything be done about it?
I don't really think he's purposely tanking for the Rockets, just that his past dumbassery has finally caught up with him like everyone said it would when he traded off every single future 1st he owned while building a team that was for the most part, largely irrelevant. If he doesn't plan on quitting and leaving his mess for a new GM to deal with, I say let him deal with the consequences.
RW has made some questionable moves, but it's his team to GM and if he wants to give away assets for free without owning his pick, that's his prerogative. If Dil ends up trading something that makes collusion more apparent, then I think punishment would be called for. But for right now, there's nothing that should be done. Congrats to Dil on getting a ton of picks from lotto teams in a strong draft.
No, if he wants to be a idiot and hand over a great pick for his long term rebuild so be it... I faced the same situation as RW going into this year. I decided to stay somewhat competitive because I didn't want to hand over a top 5 pick. I was hoping Dil would eventually move my pick back. It hasn't happened. In 1.0 I did the RW plan and gave Trofie a top 3 pick.. It was stupid then.. I feel its stupid now. But RW can run his team how he wants.
Personally I hope he is tanking for Dilworth for some sort of asset because that would at least explain what the fuck he is doing. I think if it can be proved that this was his intentions then he should definitely be fired and replaced, but if it can't be proved these were his intentions then he should definitely be fired and replaced.
6. During last season a rule was proposed to change how free agency works. Were you for or against this, and why?
I'm all for limiting using free agency cap space as solely a means to a to acquire talent to immediately flip, but if too much restrictions are placed on salary match, it could limit teams' abilities to trade. All in all, I'm gonna stick to my boyd routes and say current way is fine.
I supported the new FA rule at the time, although I just benefitted from it not being in place during this season, since I was able to trade for McGinnis. I think it would be good to prevent max-level contracts from being traded in the first year, and I don't think that limiting contracts over MLE level from being traded until day 60 would negatively impact the trade market too badly. That being said, I think the max level part of the rule should be adopted before the rest. I don't really have strong feelings about the 4.5-12 million guys, but if you're offering a max to someone then there's no real reason you should be trying to trade them that season. Bruns didn't want to win this year but beat out trofie and myself for McGinnis in FA. He should not be able to turn that into assets during the same season.
I would just prefer to keep the rule as is. I think for the most part its worked well. Limiting more players that could get moved only makes it tougher for teams to make trades. I still and will always advocate for no trade backs to be allowed. Its lame when you can trade a player only to have him come back in 60 days.. If you trade a player to a team that team should only be allowed to move said player back in the off-season.
I brought the proposed rule to the attention of the league so I am obviously for it. I don't think all the gms understood completely what I was trying to accomplish with the rule, so in true TMBSL fashion ignorant and foolish comments were made to spin the thread out of control. GMs signing FA's new to their team with the sole purpose of flipping them for assets is bad for the league, and anything we can do to minimize that more should be welcomed.
7. Are you team buy-out players remain in free agent limbo until next free agency, team odin's proposed idea, or team other idea? If team other, explain.
I'm still team leaving them in limbo. The price Odin proposed of requiring a 1st is fair (if not a bit too high) which probably would prevent most of those claims from happening ever. But I'm of the belief that a player that can contribute major minutes and production to a contender should be acquired through normal means (draft, trade, free agency) instead of a claim system.
I think the way we currently do things is fine, but I'm probably on team Odin. If there's a player who is good enough to burn a 1st on, then they should be able to be added to a contender.
I think leaving it as is would be the best route for the league to take. My other option would be to allow all teams to offer a contract to the player. You would be limited to years and dollars based on what his current deal was. You wouldn't be allowed to offer more years or more money per and you would have to stay under the hard cap numbers. I like the idea of giving up a 1st round pick to make finalize the transaction. The player would be awarded to the team giving the player the most total dollars. If there are multiple teams giving the same amount of dollars then Odin can run a random list with those teams and who ever is spit out is awarded the player.
Example 1: Butch McRae 5 years 10m per (current deal)
Team A Bids: 1 year 10m
Team B Bids: 4 years 4m per
Team C Bids: 5 years 2m per
Team C would be awarded McRae
Example 2: Butch McRae 5 Years 10m per (current deal)
Team A Bids: 2 years 8m per
Team B Bids: 4 years 4m per
Team C Bids: 1 year 10m
Team A and B would be put in a random.org randomizer and who ever is spit out at [HASH]1 is rewarded McRae.
That would be my system.
I really don't mind the way the rule is now as we don't really have that many bought out players in the big scheme of things. However if we came up with a system that was fair and agreed upon among the consensus of the league, I would be all up for trying something different. With all the ideas that have been throw out there on the matter, I just don't forsee and option that will satisfy the masses.
8. Much has been made of Dump's trade advisors, mainly Soup. Is this much to do about nothing, or do you see this as a problem with the league?
Personally having been one of those advisors, I say dump needs to grow the hell up and starting making his own decisions. He hasn't been the worst GM in 4.0 by any means and has been around since the start of 1.0, time to sink or swim on his own merits.
I don't see any issue with Dump having trade advisors, and I doubt most of the people complaining about it really think it's a problem in the league. It's a little odd for someone who's been doing this for so long to still need consultation on moves, but I don't have any problem with it. Unless Soup is literally writing messages or proposing trades on Dump's behalf, there should be no issue here. But if he still does it, then he has every reason to expect that people will continue to bitch and talk shit about it. That's the tradeoff.
I have no problem with GM's asking for advise from time to time. I do it. Normally I ask a GM who isn't in my division or conference. I also go out my way not to ask a GM who would be directly affected by my moves. But this doesn't happen very often. The problem is i'm not sure that is what Dump is doing. Seems like he may be putting to much stock and going to that well to often. It seems like the league is starting to feel like it would be better to bypass Dump and just send trade offers to Soup. That shouldn't be the case. Maybe he fears being fired again... idk. But at this point all this conversation will do is make Dump more secretive over the topic and not stop it. I just hope that when he goes for advice he tries to use GM's not affected by the offer.. So don't use Soup when your trying to deal with MidBest teams.
I personally wouldn't make decisions solely on the opinions/advice of other GMs. Part of the appeal of the league is that it's your team and you get to make the decisions. I don't understand why certain GMs get butt hurt on the matter. If you're gun ho on Dump making his own decisions, and part of Dump's decision making is seeking advice from fellow GMs, then deal with it.
9. Do you seek out opinions/advice on league related activity? If so, on what and how often?
Nope, having had as much access to the software and spending as much time as I do, I have a pretty good understanding of what makes a good team and/or what decisions/trades are beneficial. I mainly discuss things in shout just for the sake of having a sim discussion because shocker, I enjoy talking about sim related things (let's be honest, we all do)
I have sought out opinions on league activity before. I've tried for the most part to stay away from it, but I've talked to Soup and 20s about offers. I'm mostly just looking for validation of what I'm already thinking, so it's helpful to have another set of eyes on it. However, I've been sending out the trade offers from this season completely without advice.
I touched on this in question 8. I do ask advice on deals. When I returned full time as Nuggets GM I asked a ton of questions and for advice when it came to free agents, draft ect... But at this point I have caught up on the league and don't see me needing to much advice moving forward.
Every now and then I ask a GM for an opinion on some things, but not that often. Several times I've asked Ian questions about software realated things and his experience with it. Also living with Dirt, we bounce sim related shit off each other all the time. Whether or not we think a trade is good, thoughts on players grades, and what is Shavon Shields potential? You know, shit like that.
10. What is your stance on changing all board duties, articles, posts, and contest being turned into casino dollars to be used on casino rewards?
Changing board duties and articles to casino points I wouldn't mind, since they're all imaginary forms of currency anyways. But I'd like posts to stay as posts since it would get just messy if you have to convert posts to points first before cashing them in for RCs.
I would have to see what the translation would be between articles/RCs and casino points before I said for sure, but I don't see what the harm is. As long as an article could still be cashed in for +5, I don't really mind whether it's via dump bucks or the way the current system is. Putting everything through casino would be nice as it allows more flexibility. When I was banking articles and RCs during my tanking phase, I probably would've created a prospect instead. As long as it doesn't detract from the amount of articles written then I'd fully support it.
I wouldn't have a issue with moving articles into Casino points... I wouldn't move the mod rewards. Mods don't get rotated and so that gives them a unfair advantage to be able to cash those points into other things. Leave the rewards as is for Mods... Everything else imho can be turned into Casino dollars.
I think it would be a great idea, but some things would need some tweaking. After reading what Ian said about posts and RCs, I agree completely with that and I'm not sure why I even included that in the question.
