I have a habit of totalling cars. I now need a new one. Do I want a newer model something that gets good gas mileage or like a mid 00's BMW type deal?

Truecar imo if you're going the new car route. Takes all the in-person haggling out of getting a car. Just got the wife a new lease for about $200/mo less than what they haggled us to initially.

Just told my '08 Malibu and bought a '98 Silverado. Feels good man. I had been driving a Silverado that's a few years older before this purchase.
