Tale of the Tanker Tape
We got 7 teams trying to tank this year. Through 4 sims there is already a clear separation between the contenders and pretenders for the top 3 picks in the draft.
Tankers and their Current Record
Miami Heat 1-23
GS Warriors 1-22
Minnesota T-Wolves 1-19
Denver Nuggets 3-17
Orlando Magic 5-18
Van Grizzlies 5-15
Missed the Cut
Cleveland Cavaliers 4-22: Don't know what to make of this team, but their roster composition does not lend itself to being a tanking team, so even at such a bad record, they don't make the cut.
Detroit Pistons 5-16: While they have a worse record than the Grizzlies, there is a bit too much talent on the roster. Vasquez at PG will quickly take the Pistons out of the running for top 3 odds in the lotto.
Brooklyn Nets 6-14: Way too much depth down the line, not enough shitty players. Team that is kind of in limbo between tanking and mediocrity.
Breaking down the Contenders
YTD Stats (ranking among tankers)
PPG: 93.1 (5)
oPPG: 108.4 (3)
PPGd: -15.3
TOPG: 15.7 (4)
FG%: 40.4% (4)
oFG%: 47.2% (5)
What to like
Two very good tanking PG's. Despite higher then desirable grades out of his starting PG, his PG play is terrible. 4 turnovers, 37.7% shooting, is what you want from your primary ball handler. Overall team defense is pretty shitty. just one A- defender and one B+ defender. Has rotation players shooting under 42%.
What not to like
Nick Young will be off of injury soon. Once he is back that high scoring output should only get higher. Hopson is playing a little too well despite the low shooting percentage.
Strength of Schedule
Tied with the T-Wolves for least amount of games played but already has 3 wins. However, arguably plays in the best division in the league which should help. Record against tanking teams: 3-1 W: T-Wolves, Magic, Heat L: Grizzlies
YTD Stats (ranking among tankers)
PPG: 82.7 (3)
oPPG: 113.0 (4)
PPGd: -30.3
TOPG: 17.9 (2)
FG%: 39.3% (2)
oFG%: 47.2% (5)
What to like
Not s single person scoring over 18 points per game. PG averaging as many turnovers as assists. Terrible rebounding. Outstanding point differential.
What not to like
Not much. Evan Turner has great scoring grades but doesn't do much with them. for such a bad defensive team, the Warriors are one of the better defensive teams of all the tankers.
Strength of Schedule
Only 1 win so far. Record against tanking teams: 1-1 W: T-Wolves L: T-Wolves
YTD Stats (ranking among tankers)
PPG: 81.7 (2)
oPPG: 115.5 (5)
PPGd: -33.38
TOPG: 14.8 (t5)
FG%: 40.1% (3)
oFG%: 47.8% (3)
What to like
Team does not score a lot of points. Just 27 PPG scoring out of the wings and PG. Doesn't rebound very well.
What not to like
Way too much production out of the big man positions. Bowie has had an awakening and is putting up respectable numbers at 22/10 on 43 shooting. Same goes for scoonie. despite terrible scoring grades he is putting up 19 ppg. Does not spell good things for the Heat.
Strength of Schedule
Only 1 win so far. Only competing with one other tanker in the East. Record against tanking teams: 1-2 W: Grizzlies L: Grizzlies, Nuggets
YTD Stats (ranking among tankers)
PPG: 72.5 (1)
oPPG: 115.6 (2)
PPGd: -43.1 (1)
TOPG: 18.9 (1)
FG%: 37.3 (1)
oFG%: 49.3 (1)
What to like
Everything really. Leading 6 of the 7 categories. Just incredible shittiness out of Boyd's squad. Everyone turns it over. nobody shoots well. Can't match the shittiness of the Sixers, but it will come close.
What not to like
Nothing.
Strength of Schedule
Only 1 win so far. How? Record against tanking teams: 1-3 W: Warriors L: Warriors, Nuggets, Grizzlies
Predicted Lotto order
1. Timberwolves
2. Warriors
3. Heat
4. Nuggets
5. Magic
6. Grizzlies

PPGd: 18.0
TOPG: 17.6 (3)
FG%: 42.4% (6)
oFG%: 45.3% (6)
What to like
High turnover ratio. Grizzlies PG Steve Alford is averaging 3.9 turnovers and a measly 4.5 assists per game. However, he is the only guard on the entire roster which should raise some eyebrows.
What not to like
His ranking compared to the tanking teams isn't good. He is last in 3 of the 5 categories arguably most important to tanking. He also has 4 guys on the roster with B+ defense or better. Never a good thing when trying to reach the bottom of the league. The only thing the grizzles can do to try and get to the bottom of the league would be to trade leading scorer Walter Davis, but it is unlikely any contender wants him at this point in his career at a 14 million dollar cap hit.
Strength of Schedule
With 4 of the 6 tanking contenders in the West along with playing in a down Pacific division, the Grizzlies will be prone to stealing a couple of wins along the way and that could spell doom for their hopes. Record vs tanking teams 4-2 Wins: Heat, Magic, Nuggets, T-Wolves Losses: Magic, Heat
YTD Stats (ranking among tankers)

What to like
Two very good tanking PG's. Everyone knows the key to tanking in this league is to have the shittiest PG's possible. MJ found two pretty shitty ones to run his team. Low shooting percentages combines with mediocre assist number help that goal. Overall, his team is pretty thin on talent across the board. Despite a high defensive rating team compared to other tankers, the Magic give up a shit ton of points.
What not to like
His wings are way too good. Dr. J and Shareef average a combined 40 ppg on solid percentages. He scores over 5 ppg more then next tanker in the rankings. He is also at or near the bottom in 5 of the 6 rating categories. Dr. J is on the block and moving him will help move closer to the bottom of the league.
Strength of Schedule
There is only one other tanker in the conference, but it happens to be a team in the division. The Atlantic is not as strong as it was expected to be in the preseason. Unfortunately for MJ, his competitor in the division for worst team seems to have a clear advantage. Record vs tanking teams: 1-2 Wins: Grizzlies Losses: Nuggets, Grizzlies
