I don't.
Steve Nash won MVPs in 2005 and 2006.
In 2005, the Lakers were 34-48, 11 games out of the playoffs. Kobe Bryant played 66 games and amassed 8.1 Win Shares, tied for 31st most in the league with Zydrunas Ilgauskas and Corey Maggette. Nash didn't deserve the MVP, but Kobe didn't ever deserve to be an All-Star. (West guards should have been Bibby and Terry in addition to Manu/Nash/Allen who did make it.)
In 2006, the Lakers were 45-37, sixth best record in the West and a seven seed, and Kobe finished 4th in Win Shares with 15.3, and the Lakers were +12.5 points better per 100 possessions when he played vs. sat, a very good number. The MVP has only gone to someone on a team with a record worse than 3rd in their conference once in the sportswriter era (1981-present): Moses Malone in 1982, but we can at least have a conversation if he was actually a good player that year. The top 4 men in WS:
Dirk Nowitzki
17.7 Win Shares
60 team wins, 2nd most in the West
+8.2 on/off
supporting cast: Jason Terry and Josh Howard
LeBron James
16.3 Win Shares
50 team wins, 3rd in the East
+10.4 on/off
supporting cast: Zydrunas Ilgauskas and Drew Gooden
Chauncey Billups
15.5 Win Shares
64 wins, 1st in the East and [HASH]1 overall
+10.4 on/off
supporting cast: Ben Wallace and Rasheed Wallace
Kobe Bryant
15.3 Win Shares
45 wins, 6th in the West
+12.5 on/off
supporting cast: Lamar Odom and Smush Parker
It's gotta be Dirk, maybe Chauncey if you don't care about supporting cast. There's no argument to make for Kobe.
.
But since we brought up the concept of robbing MVPs, how about 2008?
Player A
17.8 Win Shares
56 team wins in the West
+9.1 on/off
9.2 Box Score Plus/Minus
28.3 PER on 25.7 USG
22.3 Wins Produced
Player B
13.8 Win Shares
57 team wins in the West
+7.0 on/off
5.4 Box Score Plus/Minus
24.2 PER on 31.4 USG
12.5 Wins Produced
Player A is Chris Paul. The MVP of 2008 by literally every single metric.
Player B is Kobe Bryant. The pretender. The false god.
Kobe Bryant should have zero MVPs. That Nash should also have zero only further proves that the MVP process is flawed, Kobe doesn't win 2005 and 2006 either.
