Round 1
1. Heat - Juan Keaney SG 6'5'' 211 23 A- C+ C+ B- D+ A
1. Heat - Juan Keaney SG 6'5'' 211 23 A- B C+ B+ C- A (+5)
Canes took a huge gamble with a software player at 1.1, and Juan explodes in TC with the biggest gains of the class. Keaney looks like a keeper, and based on his preseason these aren't empty grades either. Great result for Canes.
2. Warriors - Kenyon Martin PF 6'9'' 234 23 B+ D+ D+ B+ B+ B
2. Warriors - Kenyon Martin PF 6'9'' 239 23 A- D+ C- A- B+ A (+3, +1 potential)
One of the most surprising picks of the first round, K-Mart was seen by most as a distant fourth to Mihm, Fizer and Keaney by many GMs. Instead, Martin jumps in potential and gets some nice increases to his already great starting grades. Ocho looks to have a great young combo down low with Martin and Okafor, although both still have that dreaded D+ outside grade.
3. Magic - Chris Mihm C 7'0'' 265 21 B+ C- D+ B B B
3. Magic - Chris Mihm C 7'0'' 270 21 B+ C- C- B B+ B (+2)
Mihm was [HASH]1 on a lot of draft boards, and it looked like MJ came away with yet another lotto steal. Instead, Mihm has a decent but not great TC and the top of the draft looks like it shook out pretty accurately overall. Mihm will get some TLC from MJ and is still likely to be a cornerstone of the up-and-coming Orlando squad.
4. Timberwolves - Marcus Fizer PF 6'8'' 246 22 A- C D+ C+ B- B
4. Timberwolves - Marcus Fizer PF 6'8'' 251 22 A- C C- C+ B+ B (+3)
Big Pharma had some kick-ass starting grades, so I wouldn't worry too much about the lack of improvement in his scoring. What is alarming, however, is a stagnant defensive grade. Fizer will probably be a tweener and may still receive a defensive bump at SF, but GM IanBoyd is probably less than thrilled with the first TC for Fizer.
5. Cavaliers - Quincy McCall PG 6'2'' 204 20 B- C+ B B- D+ B
5. Cavaliers - Quincy McCall PG 6'2'' 204 20 C+ B- B B+ D+ B (+2)
McCall drops in inside scoring, kicking off a trend with this class of players dropping in one grade while increasing in others. Some questioned whether McCall cared more for love or basketball, but his PG grade set looks promising so far.
6. Hornets - Paul Ahye SG 6'5" 220 20 C+ B- B- B+ C- B
6. Hornets - Paul Ahye SG 6'5'' 226 20 C+ B C+ B+ C- C (-1 potential)
RV just cannot help himself when it comes to these software guards. Ahye demonstrates the other side of the coin for software players, with minimal gains in TC and a drop to C potential. Ahye still has a nice combo of B outside B+ defense, but it again looks like RV whiffed on his compuPlayer.
7. SuperSonics - Bob Douglas C 6'10'' 251 20 C+ C C A- B B
7. SuperSonics - Bob Douglas C 6'10'' 251 20 C C C A- B+ C (-1 potential)
In a rare move for the Yawnics, GM Vedder selects a player who does not have a foreign name. Although his gain in rebounding was offset by a drop in inside scoring, I'm counting that as a win, since Vedder didn't draft him for his scoring grades. His drop in potential means he may not get much better than this, but he looks useful already.
8. Bullets - Stromile Swift PF 6'9'' 225 21 B D+ D+ B B A
8. Bullets - Stromile Swift PF 6'9'' 230 21 B D+ D B+ B+ A (+1)
Kn has thrived drafting in the mid-late lotto, and this draft looks no different. The handles decrease isn't going to concern the Bullets much, and bumps to rebounding and defense make his big man grades look pretty sexy. Swift will need some points pumped into him, but with some help he should be a good piece for the retooling Bullets and Eric Bledsoe.
9. Cavaliers - DerMarr Johnson SG 6'9'' 201 20 B- B- C C+ C A
9. Cavaliers - DerMarr Johnson SG 6'9'' 201 20 B- B+ C C+ C B (+2, -1 potential)
Johnson had great height for a guard, and gets himself a great outside grade to go along with it. The lack of increase in defense is something to watch, but DerMarr looks like he'll at least be effective on one end of the court. He's no DerMarr Hoiberg, but I can't really hold it against him.
10. Grizzlies - Desmond Mason SF 6'7'' 224 23 B+ B- C C+ C C
10. Grizzlies - Desmond Mason SF 6'7'' 224 23 B+ B C B- C+ C (+3)
Druce has made a killing in 4.0 by ignoring potential, and looks to have made yet another C potential find here with Desmond Mason. Mason was a player that I had my eye on for 1.12, but I was surprised at how well he performed in his first TC. B+ B scoring grades are legit, and defense and rebounding increases are very valuable for a SF. Great pick by Druce.
11. Warriors - Mike Miller SF 6'8'' 218 20 B- B- C C+ C A
11. Warriors - Mike Miller SF 6'8'' 218 20 C+ B C C+ C+ B (+1, -1 potential)
Mike Miller starts off a run of wing players who all looked pretty similar. Miller drops in inside scoring while increasing in outside scoring, while jumping to C+ rebounding. His next TC will likely tell a lot about Miller, as right now his grades look pretty mediocre.
12. Raptors - Jamal Crawford SG 6'5'' 200 20 C+ B- B- C C- A
12. Raptors - Jamal Crawford SG 6'5'' 200 20 C B+ B- C+ C A (+3)
My drunken yolo pick, Jamal shows some good signs with one major red flag. Naturally, jumping two grades in outside scoring is great for a guard, and an increase above C defense means he might develop into a decent two-way player rather than being a Pee Wee level defender his whole career. Still, C inside is a major issue and could limit Crawford's development moving forward.
13. Knicks - Hedo Turkoglu SF 6'10'' 220 21 B- B- C+ C+ C B
13. Knicks - Hedo Turkoglu SF 6'10'' 220 21 B- B- C B- C+ A (+1, +1 potential)
Hedo dances his way into the hearts of Knicks fans, getting some well rounded grades coming out of TC. His handles grade isn't too concerning, and Hedo's jump in potential means that he may be due for a grade explosion next season.
14. Bucks - Quentin Richardson SG 6'6'' 223 20 B- B- C C+ C+ B
14. Bucks - Quentin Richardson SG 6'6'' 223 20 B- B C B- C+ B (+2)
Q-Rich increases in outside and defense. His development will be very interesting to watch over the next few seasons, especially as compared to the player taken right after him.
15. Clippers - Michael Redd SG 6'6'' 220 21 B- B- C C+ C B
15. Clippers - Michael Redd SG 6'6'' 225 21 B- B C B- C A (+2, +1 potential)
Redd has nearly identical increases to the player taken above him. In fact the two are only separated by a rebounding grade and potential grade. Odin admitted that determining who of Crawford, Q-Rich and Redd would be good, and this first TC doesn't shed much light on what Odin's decision ultimately was.
16. Timberwolves - Joel Przybilla C 7'1'' 245 21 C+ D C- B B A
16. Timberwolves - Joel Pryzbilla C 7'1'' 245 21 C+ D C- B B A (no change)
Ghostface Pryzbilla pulls a disappearing act in TC. Ian gave up two solid assets to select Pryzbilla in Peja and the 2.1 pick, and has to be very disappointed in the lack of growth for the big man.
17. Pistons - Mamadou N'Diaye C 7'0'' 255 25 C D+ D A- B- C
17. Pistons - Mamadou N'Diaye C 7'0'' 255 25 C D+ D A- B+ C (+2)
Tyler's golden touch with drafting manifests itself again this year. I figured N'Diaye was just a homer pick for Tyler since he's got the Auburn connection, but Odin's love of weird names wins out. N'Diaye is pretty old, but looks like he's ready to step in as a defensive big from day 1.
18. SuperSonics - Dalibor Bagaric C 7'1" 255 20 B- C- D+ C+ B- A
18. SuperSonics - Dalibor Bagaric C 7'1'' 255 20 B- C- C- B- B A (+3)
Yawn gets back to his bread and butter here, selecting another 7 foot foreigner to add to the Sonics already diverse frontcourt. Only two more foreigners and they'll have enough for a Model UN security council!
19. Pacers - Darius Miles SF 6'9'' 210 19 B- D+ C- B- B- A
19. Pacers - Darius Miles SF 6'10'' 210 19 B- D+ C- B B- A (+1)
Much like in real life, Miles was a very intriguing "boom or bust" type prospect. His scoring grades look absolutely horrific for a wing and his size doesn't look like he can move down low. There was a decent chance that Miles blew up, but instead it looks like he'll be riding the pine, at least for this first year.
20. Heat - DeShawn Stevenson SG 6'5'' 218 19 B- C C B- C- A
20. Heat - DeShawn Stevenson SG 6'6'' 218 19 B- C C B- C- A (no change)
Canes was debating whether he should send DeSoulja Boy overseas, and is probably extremely grateful for all those who talked him out of it. Stevenson is still young, but a lack of growth in TC would've been terrible after a 10,000 dump buck investment.
21. Spurs - Jerome Moiso PF 6'10'' 235 22 C+ D+ D+ B C+ B
21. Spurs - Jerome Moiso PF 6'10'' 235 22 C+ D+ D+ B B- B (+1)
Victor's first draft pick resembles the Spurs team this season. Not terrible, but nothing special. It's all going to depend on what's under the hood of those grades for Moiso to determine whether he has any value for the rebuilding Spurs.
22. Cavaliers - Tristan Benjamin C 7'0'' 222 22 B C- C- B- B- B
22. Cavaliers - Tristan Benjamin C 7'0'' 222 22 B C- C- B B B (+2)
H/T really stocked up on picks in this ugly draft, but seems to have done alright with them. Benjamin looks like a solid pickup for the back half of the first round, and while he looks a little light in the loafers, could be a solid contributor down the road for Cleveland.
23. Grizzlies - Thomas Kersey PF 6'9'' 253 21 B C C C C+ A
23. Grizzlies - Thomas Kersey PF 6'9'' 253 21 B C C C+ B- A (+2)
Kersey is a long-term project for Druce, but should be at least a rotational player for him a season or two. Druce continues to prove why he is considered one of the best drafters of 4.0.
24. Cavaliers - Keyon Dooling PG 6'3'' 196 20 C+ B- C+ B- D+ B
24. Cavaliers - Keyon Dooling PG 6'3'' 196 20 C+ B- C+ B D B (no change)
The first real whiff among H/Ts many firsts. Dooling had the kind of grades that looked like they were prime for some TC love, but instead he staggers out of the gates and takes the first step to a long career as a backup. His real life counterpart would be proud.
25. Lakers - Speedy Claxton PG 5'11'' 170 22 B- C+ B- B D+ C
25. Lakers - Speedy Claxton PG 5'11'' 170 22 B- C+ B- B D+ C (no change)
Speedy appears to be developing at a snail's pace. Buster was hoping to find some insurance for Magic's various AIDS related illnesses, but will have to look elsewhere.
26. Warriors - Jake Tsakalidis C 7'2'' 285 21 B C- D+ C+ C+ B
26. Warriors - Jake Tsakalidis C 7'2'' 285 21 B- C- C- C+ C+ A (+1 potential)
Jakey Jakey seems to be a big mistakey. Foreign names have normally been a safe bet, but Tsakalidis bucks that trend.
27. Clippers - Etan Thomas C 6'9'' 256 23 B D+ D+ B+ B C
27. Clippers - Etan Thomas C 6'9'' 256 23 B D+ D+ B+ B- C (-1)
Surprisingly, our first and only truly negative TC in the first round. My guess is Odin is disgusted by Etan's refusal to put an H in his first name.
28. Cavaliers - Mike Smith SF 6'8'' 195 24 B- C+ C- B- B- C
28. Cavaliers - Mike Smith SF 6'8'' 195 24 B- C+ C- C+ B C (no change)
Nothing much here. Boring name, boring grades, boring TC. Thanks for playing, Mike.
29. Spurs - Primoz Brezec C 7'2'' 252 22 B C- D+ C B B
29. Spurs - Primoz Brezec C 7'2'' 252 22 B C- C- C B B (+1)
Another late round flyer on a foreign big that looks to have missed the mark. Maybe Odin's changing up patterns.
