Round 1
1. Warriors - Shawn Kemp PF 6'10'' 250 20 A- C- D+ C+ B- A
1. Warriors - Shawn Kemp PF 6’10” 250 20 A C- D B- B A (+2)
The first draft pick of the Soup era, Ocho traded up with Canes and selected the talented Shawn Kemp. Despite a glut of post players from the last two drafts, Golden State has to be very excited to have a rookie with an A inside scoring grade right off the bat. We're only a few seasons removed from having only one or two A inside players in the entire league, so to have that as a rookie means the future looks bright for Mr. Kemp.
2. Cavaliers - Pervis Ellison PF 6'9'' 210 22 B+ C- C- B B- A
2. Cavaliers - Pervis Ellison PF 6’9” 210 22 B+ C- C- A- B A (+3)
The Cavs surprised some here at 1.2 by taking Never Nervous Pervis over Glen Rice and Tim Hardaway. Pervis had some starter-level grades heading into TC, and the boost to defense and rebounding mean he might be the most polished big man in this draft. Kemp has the higher ceiling, but Pervis looks to be on the road to success himself.
3. Heat - Glen Rice SF 6'8'' 228 22 B B C C+ C B
3. Heat - Glen Rice SF 6’8” 228 22 B A- C C+ C+ B (+3)
After spending a sim fortune to compare the potential of Glen Rice and Tim Hardaway, Canes selects the more Palin-friendly childhood hero. Glen gets a substantial outside scoring grade along with some rebounding help. The only real red flag is a lack of defensive improvement, but Rice already looks like he'll be a Pee Wee Kirkland-eque player at worst, and a superstar at best.
4. Timberwolves - Tim Hardaway PG 6'0'' 175 23 B C+ B- B- C- B
4. Timberwolves - Tim Hardaway PG 6’0” 175 23 B B- B B C A (+4, +1 potential)
Almost immediately after drafting Tim, the comparisons to Stephon Marbury began. The comparisons were strengthened after Ian brought in Chris Duhon to mentor Hardaway like he did with Marbury. After this initial TC, Tim is basically Stephon Marbury.
5. Warriors - Sean Elliot SF 6'8'' 205 21 B B C+ C C A
5. Warriors - Sean Elliot SF 6’8” 205 21 B- B+ B- C+ C A (+2)
Ocho's 2nd pick in the top 5 finally yields a non-post player. Elliot didn't exactly blow up, but that is a nice steady improvement for Elliot. However, with the strength of his post players, Ocho would probably have preferred an increase in inside scoring rather than outside.
6. Raptors - Danny Ferry PF 6'10'' 230 23 B C+ B- C+ B- B
6. Raptors - Danny Ferry PF 6’10” 230 23 B- B- B C+ B- A (+1, +1 potential)
Toronto was hoping for a visit from their Ferry godmother, but instead this Ferry has run aground. Yeah, I'm mixing metaphors, shut up. Ferry had some nice all-around grades, but a lack of improvement in defense and a drop in inside scoring is a far cry from the boom some expected out of the Dukie. With no preseason playing time, Ferry remains a mystery.
7. Bullets - George McCloud SF 6'6” 205 22 B- B- C C+ C- B
7. Bullets - George McCloud SF 6’6” 205 22 B- B C B+ C B (+5)
The Bullets must be on cloud 9 after Big George's TC. George probably would've fallen out of the lottery if not for an impressive showing at the Rookie Symposium, but kn88 took a risk that he wasn't just a one-hit wonder and was rewarded for that with a TC explosion. McCloud is a great running mate for Bledsoe and the boys, and kn is close to competing again.
8. SuperSonics - Mookie Blaylock PG 6'1'' 190 22 C+ B- B B D+ B
8. SuperSonics - Mookie Blaylock PG 6’1” 190 22 C+ B A- B D+ A (+3, +1 potential)
Yawn surprises everyone by passing on the 7 foot foreigner and selecting former real-life Seattle great Mookie Blaylock. Mookie improves in a couple key categories, and looks like he will likely be the man running the show on the suddenly-competitive SuperSonics.
9. Hornets - Nick Anderson SG 6'6'' 205 22 B- C+ C B- C A
9. Hornets - Nick Anderson SG 6’6” 205 22 B B- C B C A (+3)
RV continues his search for the SG of the future in Charlotte, taking the Orlando great despite having invested several recent 1sts on software SGs. Anderson has some strong improvements and already looks more promising than the rest of the SG bunch. His preseason numbers were not ideal, but Anderson and Scoonie Murray could be a formidable backcourt in a year or two.
10. Bucks - Vlade Divac C 7'1'' 243 21 B C- C+ C+ C+ A
10. Bucks - Vlade Divac C 7’1” 243 21 B+ C- C+ B B A (+5)
The only true center to earn a draft profile, Vlade was on a lot of people's shortlist as a likely star in TC. Big Stinky did not disappoint, making one of the biggest leaps in the class and looking like a strong candidate for immediate playing time in Milwaukee. Everyone Loves Vlade!
11. Cavaliers - Gary Leonard C 7'1'' 250 22 B D+ C- C+ B- B
11. Cavaliers - Gary Leonard C 7’1” 250 22 B D+ C B- B B (+3)
Gary Leonard had a really weird Rookie Symposium. His grades look like he should be a typical inefficient scoring big, but he barely shot the ball at the Symposium and blocked 6 shots, looking like a classic Defense-Rebounding big. In TC, he does indeed get the boosts to defense and rebounding many expected, but it remains to be seen if his lack of shooting was just a fluke.
12. Cavaliers - Chris Childs SG 6'3'' 195 22 B C+ C B- C- B
12. Cavaliers - Chris Childs SG 6’3” 195 22 B B- C B- C A (+2, +1 potential)
Childs please! Chris gets a small positive bump in outside scoring and rebounding. The potential increase is also nice. But overall, nothing too exciting about the growth of this young Childs.
13. Timberwolves - Stacey King PF 6'11'' 250 23 B+ C- D+ B- B C
13. Bobcats - Stacey King PF 6’11” 250 23 B+ C C- B+ B B (+4, +1 potential)
Malibu Stacey was moved to a new home in the Americas/Duhon trade, and so far it looks like her dream home! Stacey gets some really nice grades, and jumps up to a B scouted potential, indicating that he might not be finished growing yet.
14. Trailblazers - Clifford Robinson PF 6'10'' 225 23 B C C- B- C+ B
14. Trailblazers - Clifford Robinson PF 6’10” 225 23 B C C- B C+ A (+1, +1 potential)
Proof that sequels are usually not better than the originals. Clifford the big red power forward had a lot to live up to after the success of Cliff T. Robinson, and although he didn't necessarily bomb TC, it wasn't the kind of growth Duc was hoping for when he selected him.
15. Kings - Sherman Douglas PG 6'0'' 180 23 B- C+ A- B- D+ C
15. Kings - Sherman Douglas PG 6’0” 180 23 B- B- A- B D+ C (+2)
Sherman's March through TC scorches the earth. Sherman is likely only going to see backup minutes for the time being, which should give him ample time to keep growing.
16. Lakers - Pooh Richardson PG 6'1'' 180 23 C+ C+ B+ C+ D+ B
16. Lakers - Pooh Richardson PG 6’1” 180 23 C+ C+ B B- D+ B (no change)
Pooh had a really shitty TC. I mean it really went in the toilet. Buster probably wants to flush this prospect, but unfortunately one wipe is not gonna clean up this mess.
17. Grizzlies - Dino Radja PF 6'11'' 255 22 B+ C- C- C C+ B
17. Grizzlies - Dino Radja PF 6'11'' 255 22 B C- C- C+ C+ B (no change)
Yabba dabba doo? More like Dino Spumoni. Radja doesn't do much for Druce's search for his big man of the future, and looks a long way from being able to produce meaningful minutes.
18. Pacers - JR Reid PF 6'9'' 247 21 B C- D+ B- C+ A
18. Pacers - JR Reid PF 6'9'' 247 21 B C- D+ B B- B (+2, -1 potential)
Who shot JR? Apparently it wasn't JW, who was a big fan of JR Reid and gets a nice defense and rebounding growth. With a little TLC (which has mostly been absent from the Indiana franchise), JR could turn into a real baller.
19. Pacers - Chucky Brown SF 6'7'' 214 21 B- C- C- B- C+ A
19. Pacers - Chucky Brown SF 6'7'' 214 21 B- C- C B C A (+1)
The second consecutive Jerry pick, Chucky looks a bit like Child's Play so far. Handles and defense increases are nice, but his scoring grades look pretty shitty. Will take a lot for him to develop into more than just filler.
20. Grizzlies - Randy White PF 6'8'' 240 22 B C- D+ B- B+ B
20. Grizzlies - Randy White PF 6'8'' 240 22 B+ C- C- B B+ A (+3, +1 potential)
Druce goes 1 for 2 on first round bigs, as Randy shows great growth. B+ C- scoring grades are very nice for a 22 year old with decent size, and he looks much better after an increase to his defensive grade.
21. Grizzlies - Rocky Francis SG 6'4'' 191 20 C+ B+ C B D+ B
21. Grizzlies - Rocky Francis SG 6'4'' 191 20 C+ B+ C B D+ B (no change)
If Hollywood has taught me one thing, it's that no matter how much he's against the ropes, you should never count out Rocky. This TC is the equivalent of Rocky's swollen left eye in his first fight against Apollo Creed. "Cut me, Druce!"
22. Raptors - Todd Lichti SG 6'4'' 205 23 B- B- B- C+ C- C
22. Raptors - Todd Lichti SG 6'4'' 205 23 B- B- C+ B C C (+2)
Lickitung has a pretty decent TC. Based on his Symposium performance he seemed like he strong offensive player already, so a plus two in defense and plus one in rebounding are more than enough good news to ignore the drop in handles.
23. Hornets - Drew Nichols C 6'10'' 255 19 C- C- D- B C+ A
23. Hornets - Drew Nichols C 6'11'' 260 19 C- C- D B+ C+ A (+2)
The defensive bump is nice, but Drew will really have to get some improvement rebounding to make much of an impact on this league. He's probably the youngest member of this class though, so he'll have a few more opportunities.
24. Timberwolves - Dana Barros PG 5'11'' 165 22 C B+ C+ C+ D+ B
24. Celtics - Dana Barros PG 5'11'' 165 22 C B+ B C+ C- B (+3)
Dana has already found himself on three teams in his young career. He is determined to prove the haters wrong, with a big growth in handles and a nice rebounding bonus, which suggests he may have hit the gym this offseason.
25. Raptors - Waterbug Grant PG 5'7'' 140 23 B B C B- D+ C
25. Raptors - Waterbug Grant PG 5'7'' 140 23 B A- C+ B D+ B (+4, +1 potential)
Little Waterbug needed a big time bump to be useful with his super-light build. He didn't get any minutes in preseason so it is hard to say how effective he'll be, but I know of one GM who thinks he might be good thanks to the commissioner's love of Muggsy.
26. Timberwolves - Doug Roth C 6'11'' 255 22 C D+ C- B B C
26. Timberwolves - Doug Roth C 6'11'' 255 22 C D+ C- B B+ B (+1, +1 potential)
Dougie fresh has a minimal gain, but in an important category. He has great size and looks like he may be useful for Ian as he transitions out of the tank.
27. Knicks - Taylor Swift PG 5'7'' 135 22 C- C B+ C C- B
27. Knicks - Taylor Swift PG 5'7'' 140 22 C- C+ B+ C+ D+ A (+1, +1 potential)
Knicks management, in a typical headscratching move, decided to post their draft board on the front page of the NYTimes. The young starlet shows enough improvement for Knicks fans to have some encouragement for the future, the first time they've felt that way since the bygone days of SPL.
28. Warriors - BJ Armstrong PG 6'2'' 175 22 C+ B- B C+ D+ B
28. Warriors - BJ Armstrong PG 6'2'' 175 22 C+ B- A- C+ C- B (+3)
BJ earns his name by blowing up. Like all good BJs, he shows a lot of skill with his hands, as well as just enough strength to bring a smile to your face.
29. Bullets - Adrian Caldwell PF 6'8' 265 23 C+ D D+ B- B+ B
29. Bullets - Adrian Caldwell PF 6'8'' 265 23 C D D+ B- B+ B (-1)
The first and only negative TC in the first round, and it's not even a bad negative, as kn doesn't want Adrian shooting anyway. Overall, a whole lot of improvement for Soup's first TC as commish, causing some to wonder if he made his first class a little too good.
Round 2
1. Lakers - Kenny Battle SG 6'6'' 210 25 B C C A- C C
1. Lakers - Kenny Battle SG 6'6'' 210 25 B C+ C A- C B (+1, +1 potential)
