Pythagorean W-L:
Pythagorean or Expected W-L is basically an expectation of what your team's record should be based on your points scored vs your points against. The formula for Pyth. Wins is G * (Tm PTS14 / (Tm PTS14 + Opp PTS14)). The formula was obtained by fitting a logistic regression model with log(Tm PTS / Opp PTS) as the explanatory variable. Using this formula for all BAA, NBA, and ABA seasons, the root mean-square error (rmse) is 3.14 wins. Using an exponent of 16.5 (a common choice), the rmse is 3.48 wins.
This year, I ran through the 3000-3015 TMBSL data to find a better exponent to fit our league. The exponent I am now using in the formula is 8.131791984. This should provide more accurate results based on our point differentials and distribution of team success.
