Hello fellow GMs! Welcome to this year's edition of the Cuban Report Mock Draft. We're especially excited this year as we've got two GM-created players in Tobi Oyedeji and Ronald Savage, as well as an historically great PG in Isiah Thomas. This year's class is heavy at the forward and shooting guard, which should benefit roster balance going forward if a few of these wing players turn into solid players.
1. Ronald Savage - SG (20 6’6” 190 B- B+ C B C B) (18)
Needs: PF, SG, PG
In an effort to rebrand his GM’ing, Victor takes the best player available, who happens to be at a position of need. Savage’s outside scoring grade is undeniable, and with good size and B defense, Savage’s floor is as a starter and his ceiling is future MVP.
2. Mark Aguirre - SF (22 6’6” 232 B C+ C B- C+ A) (13)
Needs: PF, SF, SG, PG
Despite his childish behavior over Aguirre’s grades, GM Rw makes the no-brainer choice here and picks Aguirre. In a league needing quality SFs, conventional wisdom is Aguirre will be a stud. He could go Thomas here, but with Thabeet and a roster of scrubs, the Hawks are not in a position to compete and taking a point guard here will only hurt his tank next year.
3. Tobi Oyedeji - PF (17 6’9” 270 Texas Longhorns B- C D+ B B- A) (13)
Needs: A new GM
The Celtics are a barren wasteland of a roster. They could go any number of directions with this pick, but the Report has dumptime pegged to take former Longhorn commit Tobi Oyedeji.
4. Isiah Thomas – PG (20 6’1” 180 B- C+ B- B D+ A) (13)
Needs: PG, PF, C
Proven winner and collegiate great, Isiah Thomas brings life to Hollywood. Buster’s got an impressive list of wing candidates in Kobe, Harden, Anderson, and Hezonja to pair with Thomas for the future.
5. Kelly Tripucka – SG/SF (22 6’6” 220 (C+ B- C+ B C B) (13/11)
Needs: PF, SF, SG, PG
While Tripucka doesn’t have the star power of Zeke, Savage, or Aguirre, he does have solid starting grades, good size, and a great pedigree.
6. Danny Ainge – PG/SG (22 6’4” 175 (B B- C+ C+ C- B) (9/11)
Needs: SF, SG, PG
GM 2Poor has got one of the better young front courts in the league, and could use some help at the guard position. Ainge is a fabulous offensive weapon and should complement Blake Griffin and Art Spoelstra on that end.
7. Larry Nance – PF (22 6’10” 215 B+ C- C- B C+ A) (12)
Needs: PF, SF, PG
Some scouts think Nance may be too skinny to play PF in Sim League, but with +15 lbs available for free and another +10 lbs for dump bucks, Nance could get up to a very respectable 240 lbs by the time he is 25.
8. Herb Williams – PF/C (23 6’10” 242 B D+ D+ B B+ B) (11/11)
Needs: G, PF, SF
Whether or not yawn is able to bring back Bagels, Herb Williams would be an outstanding addition to the front court. The Report adores rising second-year player Lawson, who looks to be a future all-star PG once he gets reigns of the offense, and locking down a starting front court of Williams and Bagaric will allow Lawson to thrive in an inside focused offense.
9. (via Cavs) – Frank Johnson – PG (23 6’1” 185 C C+ B B D+ B) (11)
Needs: PG, SG, SF, C
After trading away Dick Furry and striking out on PGs in the 3016 draft, Frank Johnson fulfills the Bobcat’s needs of a potential starting PG and phallic names on the roster.
10. Orlando Woolridge – SF (22 6’9” 215 B C C- B+ C B) (12)
Needs: SF, C
The Blazers don’t have many needs when you look at their roster of Curry, Ellis, and Pettit. Woolridge’s high defense should be an immediate asset to a team looking to compete in a tough Western Conference. Given the right TCs, Woolridge could be one of the better players to come out of this draft.
11. Frank Brickowski – SF/PF/C (22 6’9” 240 B C C- B- C+ B) (9/11/11)
Needs: PG, SF, C
Jerry West reaches for the versatile forward/C from Penn State. Frank could be a great player with the right TCs and some SC/RCs into his jumper. Or he could waste away on the Pacers roster like so many good/great players have in the past
12. Albert King – SG/SF (22 6’6” 190 C+ C+ C- B C B) (10/8)
Needs: PG, SG, PF, C
Eric can be quite unpredictable, but not-so-Young Treze taking a major step back this year, the Knicks could use a young wing. It remains to be seen whether King has the vocal skills to hang with the rest of the Knick’s backcourt.
13. (via Bobcats) - Buck Williams – PF (21 6’8” 215 A- C- C- C+ B B) (12)
Needs: PG, PF, C
After addressing his point guard need earlier in the draft, Buster takes the best big available in Buck Williams. Williams outstanding inside scoring ability will take a lot of pressure off of the young backcourt. If Buster doesn’t go with Thomas at 4, look for him to select southern California native Tony Gwynn as his PG of the future.
