As most people know on here I'm a huge fan of Comedy Podcasts so I decided that I would compare GM's to comedians that I enjoy or not enjoy. Not all of these people are Stand-Up Comics obviously but they are all comedians. I compared them in not a uniform way but all the GM's remind me of the Comedian whether it is because of posting style, GM skill, or pretty much anything else. I hope you enjoy and are nice to me in the comments.
RW – Pete Holmes
- There are 2 things Pete Holmes loves and they are; The sound of Pete Holmes voice and The opinion of Pete Holmes. RW really thinks highly of him and his ability as a GM and like Pete Holmes, hey he had his own show on TV at one point, he has some success here and there. They both however can become annoying rather quickly with their ability to talk as long as possible without stopping for someone else to speak. That is not to say though that there aren’t points in which I like both Pete Holmes and RW in small doses but times usually end because they both don’t understand brevity, sometimes less is more.
Odin – Doug Benson
- For someone who seemingly smokes so much pot Doug Benson is one of the busiest comedians there is. I believe there are points where he had 3 weekly podcasts, he has had TV Shows, and he is doing road shows every weekend. This is a guy who smokes constantly as is working non-stop. This is more a comparison of when Odin was the Commish, but he is very active in trade markets, but he was constantly working with the league and on top of things and improving things. I also like Doug Benson, his Doug Loves Movies podcast can be really great if he has a good group of guests and Odin’s ability to make this league happen was a great job in making it run as smoothly as it has for as long as it has.
MJ – Horatio Sanz
- Horatio was great on SNL he was great in sketches and really was one of the better cast members during his time and often underrated for a stretch of his career. MJ was commish in this league and despite some complaints was a very good commish, also as a GM he was able to find success once he got a star to run with like how he was able to win a title with Magic. This is the same for Horatio as he was truly at his best once he found his star to run with, so whether on SNL and his sketches with Jimmy Fallon or on CBB with Scott Aukerman, Horatio is at his best when he can play off those 2.
Eric – June Diane-Raphel
- These 2 are just the perfect kind of crazy. First, eric with his admiration for Kina and then with how in-depth and how much work he has put in to the software and the statistics he has brought to the league is amazing and I am really glad he has done it. I think eric is very enjoyable in should and fun to talk with much like June. However June has a crazy side as any listener of How Did This Get Made? will attest to. One of her most devoted causes on the show is making sure that all animals in movies get proper billing and credit for the movies they are in. She is amazing though and makes the show she is on all the better with her ability to get crazy plot ideas out of her own head.
Pete - Ben Schwartz
- Benny Schwaz is favorite of mine he is great on everything he does pretty much. He was on Parks & Rec as Jean-Ralphio. He is also a really good guest on any podcast he is on. His success on podcasts and tv shows happened all relatively quickly it seems as well for Schwartz. Pete is a relative new comer to the league compared to a large number of GM’s but he picked things up quickly and has had a ton of success. He won a title and has shown a really nice ability to build a team and keep them competing.
Jerry West – Sinbad
- There was a time when Sinbad was awesome he was in Movies, he was doing stand-up on Showtime and HBO he was all over the place. Then he was no longer popular and he was gone no longer heard of. Until recently, he had a new special come out and he was appearing on all sorts of shows. He was back but only sort of as it wasn’t the same as before and he was just not as connected. JW was at one time a big part of this league and very active and made some pretty decent teams. Then he quit and we never saw him only for him to pop of sim years later and take a team back over. Only this time it was different he doesn’t care as much and just isn’t as connected.
Heebs – Aziz Ansari
- Aziz is a younger comic who has had a ton of success as both a Stand-Up and as an Actor. As a Stand-Up he has sold out Madison Square Garden and had huge specials. As an Actor, he was great on Parks & Rec and I liked him in 30 Minutes or Less. Heebs is also a newer GM who has really taken on quickly to the league and picked up on things very fast. He has had a lot of success as a GM but he also has really helped the league with the way he has gathered and created more official rules with the Commissioner. Aziz seems to love food and constantly talks about it in his special and on Parks, Heebs seems to be a really good cook from what I remember with his conversations of Asian Cuisine with the late IanBoyd.
Canes – Graham Elwood
- Graham Elwood is not a great comedian but he can be good at times. He produces some good material when he is discussing movies on his podcast. He is also making a documentary that is coming out that I want to see so he is doing some interesting things. His down side is he can be loud and he fucking whistles a lot so he gets pretty annoying shortly. Canes has built some interesting teams he has a great player in Selvy right now. He just seems to trip over himself at times and over thinking things making his moves not always the best or it stops him from moves because he overvalues his own players. He can also be a pretty big homer which makes me not want to listen much like Graham’s whistling.
Trofie – Amy Poelher
- Amy Poelher is the final member of the original UCB members on the list, and she is the most successful and popular one of the group. She has had great success in movies, on her own tv show, and on SNL. She is really funny in a large portion of the stuff she is involved in and been at the top in her run on Parks & Rec. She has had some down stretches like with Baby Mama but she usually is consistent with the stuff she makes. Trofie is the same way he has been around the league for a long time and has had a ton of success. He has won titles and is constantly competing at the top of his division. He has tanked some but mostly he is moving pieces and building winners. He has done it a lot of different ways and is very active in the trade market. One of the better GMs in the league.
Dump – Eric Andre
- Eric Andre is uncontrollable and unfunny. He has an insane show on Adult Swim and he just does weird shit that I don’t find funny. He has a nice ability to ruin shows he is on and just make some situations suck. Dump has this same ability in shout, he goes on these unfunny and out of control rants that it just ruins shout the moment it starts. So thank you for that.
Fason – Zach Galifianakis
- Zach Galifinakis has been around a lot long than I realize once I started looking at his Imdb page but he is one of the best, especially as a stand-up. He doesn’t quite always do things the normal way and if you watch his special Live at the Purple Onion you will see everything is different than most stand-ups but it is still hilarious. Fason is the same way he has been in the league a lot longer than I realize I think but he is a great gm and does a lot of great things in the league to make it run smoothly and efficiently.
He also did it just a little different than most Gm's embracing the full tank where he completely gutted his team of everything and it ended up paying off for him.
Kn88 – Tig Notaro
- I’m sure most are surprised by this choice but let me explain. Tig has been a comic for a good while now and she has never really broke big outside of writing for smaller shows. She has finally received her big breaks with a big documentary on Netflix and also getting her own HBO Show. She after a long time in comedy is finally getting the chance to show how funny she is to a larger audience. Kn has been in this league for a good number of sim years now and he never really broke through until recently, he is now one of the better GM’s in the east and really showing how good he is at building his teams and his ability to stick to a plan by holding on to Bledsoe through tank years and coming out of it competing for titles was a great job.
RV – Jonah Ray
- I want to start this by saying I like Rv a lot more than I like Jonah Ray. With that said now, I hate Jonah Ray. I don’t think he is funny and he is just rather annoying in everything he does. He however is attached to a very popular podcast in the Nerdist and has a show on Comedy Central with Kumail Nanjiani but I just don’t get it. Rv for the most part is not a good GM he doesn’t think long term with moves and contracts. He has put himself in a position where he lost a good young player because of what he is paying older players. He however has had a ton of luck in FA signing other teams players or by getting good deals on his own players for cheap. He has also had a ton of luck with Auto Drafted players. Much like Jonah Ray he is where he is because of luck.
H/T – The Sklar Brothers
- The Sklar Brothers are twins who perform as an on-stage duo they are somewhat funny and they have a podcast that can occasionally be good but I just hope for so much more from them. They are really interested in sports so I was hoping that they would be able to be more consistently funny when discussing these two things. They have done some really awesome things though like Cheap Seats for ESPN, this was an amazing show. H/T is much the same as his name stands for the duo he roots for in College sports. He has had some real success in 4.0, much like Cheap Seats, winning a title and competing with a couple different cores. However he tends to fall flat as a GM and isn’t quite as good as you thought.
Bruns – Rob Huebel
- Rob Huebel had a show with Aziz Ansari and Paul Scheer called Human Giant this is how the 3 of them really started to become more popular. Huebel has had a lot of success he has been in a lot of really good movies and he is great on Children’s Hospital. He hasn’t really found his one big break though something that he can really launch into a bigger career. Bruns is a not a new GM but he is a new one who has really adapted well and is a great fit and has had a lot of success. He has built some really competitive teams and competed at the top of the East for a long time however he never really got that one break that will make him a title winner. He is a great GM but he is still short of a title keeping him out of the conversation of best.
