Spawned from shout, here we can solicit the advice of other league members in their area of expertise.
The long and short of what I do is mortgages. I don't originate anymore, but I know pretty much everything there is to know about home loans.

I work for a veterans non-profit/issue advocacy group in DC. Mainly focused on accounts payable/financial services. I don't really have a financial background education-wise and just sort of gravitated towards that role, so I would love to pick someone's brain who has made a career of this because I'm trying to determine what my next step is and what I need to do to develop myself more professionally

Going through a broker is the best idea. Big box retail is going to cost you more, credit unions just suck b/c they rarely do mortgages. If you'd like I could also refer you to a loan officer at my company, you'd get a pretty big discount on costs, but at the least you could get a quote and feel for what it entails.

I'm a graduate student of chemical engineering, doing a research project on algal based biofuels. Previous to that I spent 3 years in a pediatric oncology research lab, developing a novel treatment to a type of brain cancer. I am completely unable to assist any of you with any problem you could realistically come across in your day to day lives.

Could you help me make some extra cash off the organic build-up?
