He is Currently a Terrible Basketball Player
There have been 178 players to have 30+ USG since 1980 (when the NBA implemented the three point line).
1 player posted negative Offensive Win Shares: Kobe Bryant 2015 with -0.4.
1 player posted worse than -16 PER-USG: Kobe Bryant 2015 with -17.3.
3 players posted worse than 48% TS%: Allen Iverson 2004 (47.8%), Kobe Bryant 2015 (47.7%), Michael Jordan 2002 (46.8%)
(Jordan responded by posting a career low USG the next year. AI kept chucking and never won another playoff series.)
Only four player-seasons were in the bottom ten of all three stats. In chronological order:
Jordan 2002: 8th, 7th, 1st
Iverson 2004: 6th, 2nd, 3rd
Rose 2015: 2nd, 4th, 9th
Bryant 2015: 1st, 1st, 2nd
It is fair to say that Kobe had the worst offensive season in modern NBA history last year.
(The two seasons to reach each top ten by this analysis are LeBron 2013 1/1/2 and Jordan 1989 8/4/5.)
Never a good jump shooter (.894 points per 16+ foot shot), last year was a brutal .825 compared to league average .947.
I trust I don't need to elaborate on defense.
He has Nothing for which to Play and Much to Lose
The Lakers have 0% chance of making the playoffs. This will be the first time in franchise history that they miss three straight seasons.
Kobe has 0% chance of adding to his resume: no rings, no awards, no chance of catching Karl (4500) let alone Kareem (6100) in career points.
Kobe has 100% chance of taking away from it.
-He's already only 11th in PPG, another season as good as last year will get him passed by Carmelo.
-Never a good jump shooter (.894 points per 16+ foot shot), last year he posted a brutal .825 compared to league average .947.
-Never a favorite of composite stats, he managed to ding his career on/off number by 6% and OWS/48 by 3%. That's not how much lower he was compared to his career marks, it's how much his career number fell following last season.
With Minnesota inexplicably giving Kevin Garnett a TWO year deal, he has no real chance at retiring as the highest paid player in NBA history: Garnett only has to play 8 games this year before retiring to have higher career earnings.
His last three seasons have ended to injury: torn Achilles, broken knee, torn rotator cuff. Being mentally tough enough to push your body past its limits has a cost, and he will only continue to pay it.
Kobe Bryant Should Retire Today
