Came up in shout and I'm interested to hear what other people think, and maybe I'll make a tournament table if there's a lot of dispute.
Mario Established home gaming. Continues to be the flagship franchise for Nintendo, which incredibly continues to survive as a pure gaming company while competing with Sony(!) and Microsoft(!!!). This is a no doubter.
Final Fantasy Established the RPG as a viable game genre, elements of which now exist in every modern game. Level ups / character growth, inventory management, NPCs, it's all thanks to Final Fantasy. Has faltered somewhat in recent years but is still an A list brand. This is a no doubter.
DooM Established the FPS genre. This one I'm least convinced about, I feel like an FPS has to be involved but the big boys (Halo? SOCOM?) are such johnny come latelies it's hard to put them in this list. Its library is tiny compared to the above two and doesn't have a signature status for any platform. Managed to make a poor movie involving The Rock and Karl Urban, which should be impossible.
Angry Birds Established mobile gaming, which (candy) crushes every other gaming platform. Joe Sixpack's mom has probably played Angry Birds and has never even heard of the others on this list except Mario, let alone played them. It shattered the distinction between gamer and non-.
World of Warcraft Established MMO gaming. UO/EQ/AC are like the Dragon Warrior to WoW's Final Fantasy. You can also argue for Dungeons and Dragons Online for mainstreaming the F2P/freemium MMO thing. I don't think any of these stack up.
Some Facebook game ???
Some MOBA ???

Final Fantasy and Counter Strike for my top 2. Discussion needs Mortal Kombat Counter-Strike is a worthy contender for the FPS category, as is Quake. I feel like with so many essential franchises (haven't even mentioned CoD yet) it's hard to pick any one as its most important, and so hard to pick any one as a most important of gaming in general. Compare to the platforming genre, where Mario is head shoulders knees and toes above everyone else. Mortal Kombat brings up fighters, but I think of them as more of a fad. Certainly it and Street Fighter were massively popular in their heyday and especially MK had wild crossover fame/infamy, but even though the franchises have continued to produce (or perhaps overproduce) titles they haven't come close to matching the success, whereas Mario shatters records with every title. Consider that just the original Street Fighter II (no Super, no Turbo) remains the highest selling SF title of all time by a huge margin. All-time their franchise sales are ironically neck and neck but barely ahead of Kirby. Starcraft and counterstrike got me into gaming on the cpu. Starcraft brings up RTS, another major league genre, but one I feel never crossed over into the console world. I thought of Madden after I made the post, it is a very important one and of course a voluminous franchise. I grew up on John Elway and Tecmo Bowl but only the latter enjoyed any success and obviously isn't on Madden's level as a franchise. I like Counter Strike and Rainbow Six as better FPS To be clear, the list is not the BEST franchises, but most important. The original Final Fantasy is a brutal game: no Phoenix Down, have to buy potions one at a time, the magic system is a joke, it takes you 10 hours just to get to the first macguffin. The only FF game I would put in a best game discussion is FF6 and even that is a grind. Still, the original Final Fantasy changed the gaming world, and as a franchise it still packs a punch. . Two others I've come across in looking at various lists: Pokémon and Grand Theft Auto. GTA to me is the MK of our era: infamous but not that influential. Pokémon is a cultural phenomenon that somehow continues to churn out TV shows, CCGs, and 18(!!!) movies so far. I'm open to other thoughts but I definitely think Pokémon should be in the discussion.

CoD/Halo didn't really do anything ground breaking, it was just very good. When I think "most important" i think of more than the degree of excellence. Doom was great but it didn't have online play. Counter'Strike and Unreal Tournament are the two that stand out there.
Pokemon is interesting but I'm not sure it did more than final fantasy. Of course, it may very well be why the game boy/ds lines have always been so popular.

Super Tecmo Bowl was the first football game (that I know of) that had cumulative season stats and injuries.
Also, College Basketball 2k8 was on another level as far as franchise mode goes. The scouting system was light-years ahead of everything else. Really wish that franchise hadn't seized up with the O'Bannon suit.

Bill Walsh football and rbi baseball got me into console gaming. and tecmo bowl followed by tecmo superbowl. For PC gaming, I really liked the Quake engine and there was a game released called Return to Castle Wolfenstien that got me into FPS gaming in multi-player. Was addictive and fun to play. They had a sequel that was released for free and then another after that called Enemy Territory : Quake Wars that was absolute shit. There was another FPS on another engine that I liked called Day of Defeat. That was a load of fun to play.

I think you're underselling GTA III a bit, i remember being absolutely AMAZED by that game when it came out.I played a shit ton of videogames from an early age but no game ever made me wish I had the other system like GTA III. Even Mario.

GTA essentially spawned the genre of sandbox gaming I think that distinction is a little loose. What specifically distinguishes GTA 3 from (for example) Legend of Zelda Majora's Mask in terms of sandboxery? Or look at the World of Ruin in FF6, that's quintessential sandbox. I agree that GTA is an elite franchise, I hesitate in making it a top 3 important one though. It has to at least match up to Mario, FF, or Madden, and I don't think it clears that bar. I definitely think a tournament is in order, though. I'll give it another day to get everyone's thoughts, but right now I feel like: Mario Final Fantasy Madden Angry Birds World of Warcraft Pokémon Starcraft Grand Theft Auto have to be discussed even if I feel the top three are prohibitive favorites, and I'll do mini polls to decide on a fighting and FPS representative. . What do you guys think about Tomb Raider and FIFA games?

I fucking despise Toe Joe and Earl. I was so bad playing it as a ute. I remember one weekend my mom dropped me off at Zach Thomas's house for the weekend. We rented that and the NHL game. We lived off of Mountain Dew and Lays potato chips. I also vividly remember listening to Dookie a lot.
