You only get 3 votes this time. I thought about just giving Mario #1 and having us vote on the rest, but at least one person didn't vote for Mario at all and at least one person had Mario at #4, so I decided to keep it in. This will be the final word on the subject for time immemorial, choose your votes carefully.

I'm tired of the Mario love. At one time it probably was the most important gaming franchise but so was pong. Those days are long gone.

Mario was one of the first characters in video games, but has since put out a certified classic game in just about every style of gaming imaginable:
Platforming (Super Mario Bros, et al) 3-D (Super Mario 64) Sports (Mario Tennis, et al) Racing (Mario Kart) Party (Mario Party) RPG (Super Mario RPG, Paper Mario) Fighting (Super Smash Bros.)

I'm tired of the Mario love. At one time it probably was the most important gaming franchise but so was pong. Those days are long gone. I would make two points. First, the Mario franchise has sold 510 million games, more than the next two highest franchises (Pokémon and GTA) put together. Even if you include only core games (so no Kart, Party, Sports, RPG, etc.) they've sold 300 million, more than any other single franchise in history. It's not like Mario was narrowly ahead of contemporaries in the past, it demolished the field. A mute Italian plumber became more popular than Mickey friggin' Mouse! Second, unlike many franchises Mario continues to have present relevance. Super Mario Brothers Wii and New Super Mario Brothers (DS) each sold 30 million copies, the highest for any Super Mario Brothers game since the original. All five of the top five Wii U games involve Mario. The voice actor for Mario is a multi millionaire and he didn't get on the train until Super Mario 64. Mario was and continues to be ubiquitous. Plenty of people know what GTA is, but how many people do you think can name characters from the series? Put just "Mario" in google image search and see how far down you have to scroll to see a picture of anyone else. Mario was one of the first characters in video games, but has since put out a certified classic game in just about every style of gaming imaginable: Don't forget Dr. Mario, classic puzzle game! (Okay, that's a stretch.)

I guess what it comes down to is when I think of "most important" i think of games that have/had/will cause(d) the most change in the industry not sales numbers.
Mario revolutionized platforming. Although platforming can be found in most games there are few major releases these days that are solely platforming, most platforming-only games are indie or irrelevant.
But let's pretend sales numbers are what actually matter:
1. I think it's important to separate the Mario and Super Mario franchises in this discussion. Super Mario was revolutionary. Mario made money of a previously established character. Sure, Mario Kart and Smash Bros are great but they're hardly revolutionary. 2. If we consider only Super Mario, then it's worth pointing out that the franchise's sales numbers fall short of more recently established franchises such as CoD, Pokemon, and GTA (300 mil/30 years vs 275/20 years in the case of pokemon, 225/20 for GTA, 175/12 for CoD).
But, let's step away from Mario because it's much more forgivable than Madden being here. Sure, Madden was pretty important for sports gaming but that's just one genre, not gaming as a whole. You'll never find football elements in an rpg but you will find rpg elements in football games. Votes for madden are nothing more than bias.

lol you call it bias, but you are clearly bias towards the rpg game franchises because they have had an impact on every genre. sports haven't. i mean, there's probably a reason 1/2 of this poll is rpgs.

i would argue that Madden games revolutionized sporting games more than any one rpg franchise revolutionized it's genre.

Looks like we have a solid top four. Mario, then FF/GTA/Madden. So say we all.

I would argue Halo should be on there as well....Halo 2 is pretty much the reason online gaming is at the level it's at. Not to mention, Halo 2 is the reason Xbox Live was originally successful. Not to mention, the Halo series is the reason console FPS's are so popular.

Going back and voting for it a million times
