It was nice to see Mo Williams and Anderson Varejao running the pick and roll again.
It was less nice to see James Jones still fumbling around, but at least with Varejao healthy he's reduced to the 5th big on the DC and as Mozgov and Love's conditioning gets back to pre-injury levels he'll hopefully not play at all.
I am very cautiously optimistic about Richard Jefferson. I had assumed he'd be staggering around like Shawn Marion out there, but aside from one pathetic and dumb foul on Mirotic he didn't embarrass himself.
Jared Cunningham was -8 in 3 minutes but man his athleticism was very noticeable out there. He's only played for about 12 seconds in his career and will probably fall off the depth chart once Kyrie gets back (as the Cavs were very happy to play Mo at shooting guard last night) and definitely once Shumpert gets back, but Cleveland really needed some bounce off the bench last year and he can certainly provide that. Multi-max teams are beggars for depth, any potential they can get their hands on is a plus.
The lack of chemistry with Tristan Thompson was very obvious. The Cavs missed him multiple times on random cuts that left him wide open under the basket. They'll get used to him again.
.
Rose still can't shoot. Taj still can't shoot. If Mirotic has remembered how to shoot they can at least run an offense. If McBuckets has remembered how to be any kind of basketball player they have the beginnings of a legit bench with him, Gibson, and Noah. Closing lineups for each team:
Cavs - Dellavedova / Williams / James / Love / Thompson
Bulls - Rose / Butler / Snell / Mirotic / Gasol
Hoiberg had a little deer-in-the-headlights look during the GameTracks State Farm Audio Live Look In Sideline Cam, maybe that's just how his eyes look though. There's three ways to look at Gasol's defensive performance closing the game:
1. Two blocks.
2. Love scored 8 points in 1 minute.
3. It's 1 minute. Who cares.
The shot charts aren't up yet but I felt like Chicago lived off of floaters while Cleveland generated lots of threes and rim attempts. The officiating was almost as shoddy as the free throw shooting and player conditioning, that'll all come together as the season goes along.
Haven't watched the GSW-NOP game yet but I've got it on TiVo.
