1.1 Celtics – Needs: Everything
Joel Embiid
19
C
7'
250
Kansas
B+ C- D+ B+ B A
The Celtics make the no-brainer choice here at 1.1. Not only is Embiid the best player in this draft by a mile, but Dump is in a position to tank to a top 3 picks for years to come and adding a high-ceiling developing big is a perfect fit for his strategy.
1.2 Thunder – Needs: Wings
Andrew Wiggins
19
SG
6'8
200
Kansas
B B- C- B C A
With a young rotation of good looking bigs in Najera, Stokes, and Williamson, and the developing Derrick Rose, GBG drafts the best wing available in Wiggins. If scouting reports are to be believed, his jumper will need some development but his “non growing” attributes (the athletic ones) should be elite, which is what you want. The Thunder could be back to elite status sooner rather than later if Wiggins pans out and Rose develops.
1.3 Magic – Needs: SF
Jabari Parker
19
SF/PF
6'8
235
Duke
B B- C- B- C+ A
Similar to the Thunder, JHB is set at PG and bigs with Lopez, Gallagher, et al, and Kemba. In addition, one of OJ and Augmon should become the SG of the future in Orlando. What the Magic really need is a SF, and Parker fits the bill. With elite scoring potential, Parker should become the number 1 option in Orlando in no time.
1.4 Hornets – Needs: Everything
Dante Exum
19
PG
6'6
190
Australia
B C+ B- B- C- A
Even though rv should probably focus on tanking a couple of more years to fill out his roster and avoid taking a PG, Exum is the best player available and rv has a gaping hole at PG. He’ll need to pump points into his jumper immediately, but Exum has the potential to become an all-star in the league.
1.5 Bobcats – PG, Wing, Young big
Aaron Gordon
19
PF
6'9
220
Arizona
B D+ C B B- A
Without a PG worth a lotto pick left in the draft, Odin has to settle for the BPA in Aaron Gordon. There is always FA, Odin.
1.6 Lakers – Needs: PG
Dario Saric
20
SF/PF
6'10
230
Croatia
B C C- C+ B- A
The Lakers has a few picks to play with in an attempt to move up for Exum, which they might do. Otherwise look for them to target a player like Darrell Floyd as a PG of the future in LA. Assuming they can’t get Exum, we expect Buster to take the potential Soup special in Dario Saric.
1.7 Warriors – Needs: youth
Noah Vonleh
19
PF
6'10
240
Indiana
B C D C+ B- A
With a solid starting 5 of Si, Gordon, Beasley, Tarpley, and Herb, Taco has the flexibility to take the developmental project in Vonleh. The Report is a little (lot) terrified of the C outside grade given the scouting report that he hits 3s at a good clip. That could spell disaster with his good outside grade hiding a poor jumper to prop up that scouting report.
1.8 Bucks – Needs: less rookie-contract players
Julius Randle
20
PF
6'9
250
Kentucky
B+ C- D C+ B- A
We fully expect Trofie to move this pick along with a player or two from his roster for a legit star, but if not, he’ll take the ‘tweener Randle and make him into an all-star SF.
1.9 Thunder (from Clippers) – Needs: Wings, depth
James Young
19
SG
6'6
215
Kentucky
C+ B C- C+ C B
GBG rolls the dice on a teenage SG with good scoring grades. Here comes a +4 and +1 potential. We fully expect him to be PG eligible by the end of his rookie contract, at which point 4.0 will self destruct.
1.10 Wolves – Needs: Wings
Nik Stauskas
21
SG
6'6
205
Michigan
C+ A- C C+ C- B
With three of the last four picks in the lotto, KN adds a lethal outside scorer to his B team. Nik should complement that core really well.
1.11 Rockets – Needs: Everything
PJ Hairston
22
SG
6'5
230
UNC
B- B- C C+ C B
B- B- scoring grades historically have not fared well, but Dil is hoping for the first non-profile player off the board. With a nice TC, Hairston could be a great scorer in sim league.
1.12 Bullets (from Hawks) – Needs: Big
Clint Capela
20
PF
6'11
225
Switzerland
B D+ C- C+ B- A
With the first of his two picks to finish out the lotto, KN takes a lotto ticket in Capela. If that A potential is legit, Clint could be a steal at 1.12.
1.13 Bullets – Needs: Big
Mitch McGary
22
C
6'10
260
Michigan
B C- C- B- B B
Another pick, another big for KN. This time, it’s more of a lotto ticket type player in McGary. He could get the DeJuan Blair treatment, as an enigma of a college player that flamed out in the pros, or he could wind up at a career LLE back-up big. Only time will tell.
