Overview:
The 3002 TMBSL Offseason was one of the most memorable ones in sim league history. In a free agency period that saw as many as 6 Finals MVP caliber players test the market in which fortunes were made, balances of powers shifted, franchises and potential dynasties left in utter ruins and gave rise to new fledgling empires. Not to mention a deep draft class that saw fellow tanking GMs marvel at the seemingly perpetual luck of a familiar lotto jumper. After the ensuing chaos that was the draft and free agency, here are some of the notable winners and losers:
Winners:
Key acquisitions:
Bob Lanier C 30 6'11'' 260 A- C C+ A+ A- B (Free Agency)
Alvan Adams SF 24 6'9'' 225 B+ A- B A A- B (Free Agency Resigning)
World B. Free PG 24 6'3'' 190 C+ A A A- C- B (Free Agency Resigning)
In a free agency for the ages, TMBSL resident prehistoric reptilian GM dumptime waddled away undoubtedly as the biggest winner. By retaining the young Celtic OG PG, Wolrd B. Free along with the ultra talented wing scorer Alvan Adams, one whose talent is already MVP caliber, one could already classify the Celtics offseason as a success. However, in the shocker of the sim century, creation season MVP Bob Lanier, the most dominant big man in the league also decided to take his talents to Massachusetts, turning the Celtics into a team that suddenly called fans to envision memories of its glorious past under GM/Commissioner poetic nole. When interviewed by the media about their plans on capitalizing their new found momentum to build another Celtics dynasty, the above mentioned reptilian GM had this to say:
Key acquisitions:
Moses Malone C 23 6'10'' 255 A- C- C- A+ A+ A (Resignings)
Neon Boudeaux C 19 7'0'' 274 B+ C- C- B+ B+ B (Draft lottery/luck/voodoo)
Campy Russell SF 26 6'8'' 215 B A- B B C+ B (Free Agency)
To say GM scatmanduse is no stranger to good fortunes would be an understatement on par with calling Manning family "decent quarterbacks" or Avatar as "somewhat of a financial success". Entire seminars worth of discussion was held in shout throughout the years in awe of scatman's voodoo when it comes with anything involved with FBB's software and/or lottery. In dramatic fashion that shocked no one, the Nets gm vaulted from the 10th slot into 3rd position with only a 2.5% odds on draft night, then promptly voodoo'd the software into offering the only contract that was accepted in the entire league during the resigning period for perhaps the 2nd biggest prize in the free agency class in young Moses Malone. With the addition of fake Shaq Neon Boudeaux, the Nets forms a terrifying front court tandem that averages only 21 years old. Despite a controversial illegal signing of SF Campy Russell (a 2 year max that should not have been allowed), the league office has decided not to punish the Nets organization, proving once again that luck is indeed a skill.
Key acquisitions:
Bob McAdoo PF 27 6'9'' 215 A- C C+ A- A- B (Free Agency Resigning)
M.L. Carr SG 27 6'6'' 205 B- B+ C+ A+ B- C (Free Agency)
Khalid Reeves PG 21 6'3'' 204 B- B B- B+ D+ A (Draft/TC)
The humble fans of South Beach, USA let out a collective sigh of relieve as news quickly spread of Bob McAdoo's decision to not take his talents elsewhere. After a sub-par regular season, the Heat front offices manages not only to bring back the face of the organization; the talented shooting guard M.L. Carr was also lured away in free agency from conference rival, the Charlotte Hornets to bring some much needed scoring from the wing. But perhaps most importantly, the Heat in perhaps the steal of the lottery, is now able to bring in the new voice of the organization, a man with numerous sources from "DA STREETS", the embodiment of winning; the one and only: DJ Khalid.
Key acquisitions:
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar C 31 7'2'' 230 A- C- C+ A+ A- C (Free Agency Resigning)
Dan Issel SF 30 6'9'' 240 A C C B+ B C (Traded from Timberwolves)
Randy Denton C 29 6'10'' 245 C+ C- C- B+ B+ B (Free Agency)
Tom Henderson PG 26 6'3'' 190 C B- A A- D D (Free via Trade from Lakers)
After failing to find a suitable running mate to the #1 pick in the creation draft, Julius Erving, the Bucks front office spent the latter part of last season working on several blockbuster trades, landing The Captain, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar from Philly and shipping off Truck Robinson to Texas. As news spread of El Capitán's decision to return and the acquisition of another enforcer down low in Randy Denton, GM trofie worked quickly on several other deals to add additional ammo for a title run, trading for point man Tom Henderson; whose experience in running with big men Artis Gilmore and Bob Lanier will be vital for chemistry with Kareem, as well as the leading scorer from a 60 win team in Minnesota, Dan Issel. Now with no draft picks until possibly 3008, Bucks fans are focused solely on the here and now as they prepare for a possible title contention run.
Key acquisitions:
John Williamson SG 25 6'2'' 190 C+ A- A- A- D+ A (Free Agency)
Maurice Lucas SF 26 6'9'' 220 A- C C+ B+ A- C (Traded from Denver)
Seth Sanford C 23 7'0'' 249 B- D+ C- B- A- D (Free Agency)
Despite losing one of the best players on the team in M.L. Carr to free agency, the Hornets have done what few teams managed to pull off; adding not one, but two potential Finals MVP caliber players in 1 offseason. Following the news of John Williamson's decision to sign with the team, gm rv12 worked fast to add perhaps the best contract in the league, Maurice Lucas into the fold - a 30 ppg ultra talented scorer that's yet to reach his prime at the age of 26 and on an insane 6 million per year deal that lasts for 3 more seasons. A late free agency LLE offer for another double double front court player Seth Sanford rounds out the Hornets' offseason that now has fans in Charlotte saying, "M.L. who?" while the team prepares for tipoff to a season that could lead to a deep playoff run and perhaps even a championship.
Losers:
Key Losses:
Clifford Rozier PF 6'11'' 250 21 B- D D B- B A (Training Camp +0)
Celtics Sign PF Bob Lanier for $112,500,000 over 6 years.
Celtics Sign SF Alvan Adams for $112,500,000 over 6 years.
Celtics Sign PG World B. Free for $84,756,100 over 6 years. (Loss of future draft value)
Despite suffering no personnel losses, the Grizzlies experienced perhaps the most brutal offseason one could endure that involve no actual players. First was the inexplicable late season surge that saw the Celtics grab the #2 seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs by winning the putrid Atlantic Division on the last sim of the season and robbing Memphis of a lottery pick that could have turned into Khalid Reeves or Eddie Jones. Then came the news of the budding Celtics dynasty in the form of the free agency period that will forever be known as "The Dump", crashing the value of the picks gained from the Alvan Adams trade faster than dumptime after a Dr. Pepper sugar rush. Finally there was the all too familiar dreaded +0 TC to the 1st round pick that gm druce sadly knows all too well now. Suffice to say, this was not a happy offseason for the good people of Memphis.
Key Losses:
Richard Washington PF 23 6'10'' 220 B B C- A- A- B (Free Agency to Colonels)
Dan Roundfield SF 25 $12,000,000 $12,600,000 $13,230,000 $13,891,500 $14,586,075 $15,315,379 $0 $81,622,954 (Cap Space)
Bill Laimbeer C 23 6'11'' 245 C+ C C- B+ A- A (TC -1)
After winning the inaugural devine's GM of the year award for a 1st round playoff exit following a season started off trying to tank, GM devine spent Offseason 3002 to prove himself worthy of the self-given award to himself by himself. Balking at young Richard Washington's audacity to not offering to re-sign with the award winning front office, devine decided to do with all responsible GMs would: offer a (nearly) max level deal to an older less accomplished player in Dan Roundfield, a defensive specialist known mostly for averaging 14 points per game and being the 4th option in Minnesota. Upset at the idea of needing more defensive, the budding franchise star Bill Laimbeer, in a very Bill Laimbeer and devine manner, decided to skip training camp and suffer a -1 in defense. Another shoo-in for consecutive devine's GM of the year award if there ever was one.
Key Losses:
Darryl Dawkins C 21 7'0'' 257 B D F+ A A- B (Free Agency to Bulls)
Randy Denton C 29 6'10'' 245 C+ C- C- B+ B+ B (Free Agency to Bucks)
Kyle Macy PG 21 6'3'' 175 C+ B- B- C+ D+ C (TC +0)
Following a creation season in which they successfully resigning franchise superstar John Drew, veteran GM w2d decided to mortgage his future in an attempt to gamble for instant payoff, trading off a majority of their major assets for young big man Darryl Dawkins, who at 20 years old looks brimming with potential to develop into a future all league type of talent. After being swept in the first round by the Celtics in a series that many had picked the Hawks to win in, Atlanta was burdened with more bad news as their already paper thin front line took one devastating loss after another as both young Darryl and the defensive specialist Randy Denton opted for greener pastures for the Bulls and Bucks respectively. Now faced with a non existent front court and another disappointing Training Camp to sophomore PG Kyle Macy and virtually no draft picks, tough times are ahead for Atlanta
Key Losses:
John Williamson SG 25 6'2'' 190 C+ A- A- A- D+ A (Free Agency to Hornets)
Bobby Jones SF 26 6'9'' 215 B A- C A+ B+ A (Trade to Thunder)
Kobe Bogues C 31 6'11'' 298 C C- C A- A- C (Trade to Thunder)
Due to a lack of attentiveness during the creation draft, PG John Williamson was auto drafted to the Suns franchise in the 3rd round, upon his return to the office, gm ankly spent the next few hours to no success trying to trade young John. Perhaps due to knowledge of this, the unheralded point guard spent the next 2 seasons turning opposing teams into a showcase for his talents for scoring and promptly tested free agency once his creation contract ran out. Saddled by a lack of cap space due to an unfavorable contract to Mitch Kupchak, the Suns front office was unable to free up enough money to attempt a Williamson resigning as ankly has now resigned to his fate and has since decided to rebuild his team and swiftly traded talented front court players Bobby Jones and Kobe Bogues to Oklahoma. Once the talk of the league after pulling off major upsets in the playoffs against the Thunder in creation season and dominating the team of league MVP David Thompson in last year's playoffs, the Suns will now have to spend several years in mediocrity before making any noise in the league again.
